“dinner for 4 and child”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

I know it is good steak - BUT: some prices so high the prix fixe seems to be the way to go
I thought the service was very very slow
..maybe child could have got ice cream with less waiting ..????
Some things were mediocre - cheese on platter, but proscuitto was good
Potatoes OK - asparagus OK but skimpy
Carrot cake not a good product - cheesecake too dense
I am visiting DC and would not bother to return to it

“Great beef, sides a bit less”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2013

J. Gilberts beef is very good - tender and tasty. It is also pretty pricy. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The staff is very friendly, but not overly, and our waiter was very knowledgeable about both the menu and the wines. Judging by the number of people waiting for a table when we left, it has a great following. The beef would have been better with a sauce. They have sauces available (3 flavored butters and a Foyot sauce), but I would have thought that a restaurant touting high quality beef would have enhanced the offerings with at least an espagnole sauce, if not a demi glace. The side of spinach was very good, but my baked potato was not hot and was undercooked. Our friends agreed that the experience was very nice, but not necessarily a great value.

“Great food and fairly good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2013

Four entrees, four winners including the steak, scallops and salmon. Each was done exactly right. The prix-fixe menu is actually a pretty good bargain because the bisque soup and the wedge salad both received raves, as did the coconut multi-layer cake for dessert. The parking lot fills up fast so you have to just work through that (valet parking is worth it). The service was a bit spotty and inattentive but not so much as to detract from great food, nice atmosphere, and a place where you can actually have a conversation with good friends without worrying about the crowd noise. The bar was pretty busy for a weeknight, too, so they must be doing something right in there as well. All in all, a very good place for an upscale dinner. I will definitely be going back to see if the service steps up to warrant an upgrade to five bullseyes.

“Every time perfection...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

Every time we go to this restaurant it is perfect.......perfect food, perfect service....perfect atmosphere. We always find a restaurant in every city we live in that is "us" and this one is it. It is upscale...but not pretentious...great food...but not ridiculously priced...great service and presentation without being over the top. I had the fish special...amazing. My husband usually gets a steak and raves every time. His favorite drink is at J Gilbert's is the manhattan...perfect every time...

“Great Service and fairly good food. Our hats off to Nader and Dorna for the very friendly service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

I have eaten at this restaurant an number of times before and I was never impressed with the food greatly until my last visit. We had had reservation were seated immediately upon arrival. The salads were great and our party ordered mainly steaks. The steaks were nicely prepared and the vegetables were good. We were all extremely impressed for the excellent service we received from Nader, our server and Dorna. I think their dedicated service should be recognized by the management. I will eat here again. The food is a little pricey.
