“Great Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

We just returned from a weeks stay at Sorrel River Ranch Resort. The property was beautifully located right next to the Colorado River. The river view room we stayed in was 20 yards from the bank. The property was very peaceful and the staff was great. Arthur in Food and Beverage really went out of the way for us and we appreciated it. Food was superb. The only drawback is that the property is 17 miles from the main part of Moab township, but some may enjoy the remoteness. Also the partners we used for our adventures (off-roading and rafting) were excellent as well. Beware cell phone and wi-fi are spotty.

Room Tip: The entire property had a beautiful location, but the river view rooms were especially nice.

It is true, we are 17 miles from the town of Moab. However, it is probably the most stunning 17 miles of two lane highway anywhere in the Continental US. Quite a claim, I know, but one I'm willing to back up. I think we should enter our scenic by-way in some kind of contest. That's how amazing it is.

As to the cell service -- true. Currently, cell service is available from certain locations on the 240 acres, but not everywhere. Guests who wish to may inquire at the Front Desk to get advice on the best spots. However, we actively encourage all our guests to "unplug" when they're on their vacation. The level of electronic stimulation and fast-paced communication in our lives these days has amazing benefits, but it also has a cost. Take a short break from our hyper-connected world. Visit Sorrel and reconnect with yourself, your loved ones and with nature.

We enjoyed a recent stay at the Sorrel River Ranch Resort. The setting is breathtaking - after soaking in the views from our riverside room, we wondered whether we even needed to go to Monument Valley because the resort is set among stunning buttes. Our room was a river view family suite - it had a loft upstairs with two beds. I appreciated the attention to detail - the room fit the ranch theme to a "t." If I were expecting a lovely pool and grounds, though, I would have been a little disappointed. The setting of the dining room overlooking the river is a plus, as well.

Room Tip: The family river view suite we stayed in was very spacious and comfortable.

We do take pride in the fact that most of our cabins line the banks of the Colorado River and offer unprecedented views. That and the fact that if you are looking for a four-star resort or hotel experience, you would have to drive four hours in any direction to come upon any establishment offering a similarly luxurious experience.

A heavy stone's throw from the Colorado River with breathtaking views in all directions! My wife and I have stayed here twice and each visit has been excellent. The accommodations are of rustic decor but very comfortable. Service has been impeccable in all respects. When we arrived this time, our fireplace was inoperable...not that we really needed it but it's nice to have, right? A phone call to the front desk brought a very competent maintenance guy hustling right over; he fixed it up pronto. Parking is convenient. The pool is probably okay but it was too chilly for us to use in May. I'd give it a strong five starts except the Resort's dining room (River Grill Restaurant) left us disappointed. I ordered filet mignon while my bride chose grilled salmon. Both ordered medium rare; both dishes arrived at the table close to well done. A beautiful dining room with great views but...the prices; watch your wallet! Instead, try River Grill Restaurant which is just down the road. Arches National Park is close by, don't miss that!

Room Tip: Go for a River View Deluxe Suite if you can.

We love it when you call us "classy."

And as to the chef preparing your meal to your liking, we encourage our guests to please make it known to your server if there is ever any aspect of your dining experience that is not to your absolute pleasure. We will take whatever steps are necessary to make it right. In this case, we probably would have happily started over from scratch. Since you have been here multiple times, we're hoping we'll see you again and will let us know if anything can be made better. We like feedback.

We recently stayed at the Sorrel River Ranch for a few days while exploring the Canyonlands/Arches area. The ranch was quiet and peaceful. The staff was very helpful; when my son missed lunch because he was out on an adventure, a hamburger was quickly delivered to our cabin. Sitting on the front porch and watching the horses playing in the paddock and with the rock formations in the background was the best medicine ever. I loved the little kitchenette and table. It was hard to believe we were in such a beautiful place. The food was delicious and served in a relaxed but professional manner. We loved the guitarist playing in the background. I want to bring more of the family and come back again!

Room Tip: We had a "mountainview" room, I think the "lowest" on the list and the only one...

Thank you so much for your very gracious and articulate review. Especially for mentioning the guitarist playing in the background. That is something we've only added this summer, so it is very good to get that feedback.

This is the place for you if you want good family time!! Limited cell service. Our family loved sitting by the fire every night eating s'mores. Grab a bike and go for a ride. Have a family basketball game or go for a hike. You are approximately 25 min away from the town of Moab.

We couldn't agree with you more — Sorrel is the best place for families. Whether it's horseback riding, playing in the pool or on the activities lawn, or mountain biking around the ranch, kids have the opportunity to put away their video games and iphones and explore the entire 240 acres while their parents are otherwise occupied (psst... perhaps enjoying a couples massage at our Colorado River Spa.)

The Ranch is a beautiful location and every person working went out of their way to be friendly and did everything they could to make our stay excellent. That being said, the location is a drawback in that everytime you want to go to Moab, Arches, Canyonlands, etc there is a long drive (30 - 40 minutes) to get there. We found that we could not enjoy the ranch as much as we would like because it was not worth the time to drive back in the middle of the day and have to drive back in the evening to hike. As other reviewers have mentioned, the restaurant is good (especially breakfast) but limited in what they offer and the menu does not change. After 2 days we opted to eat in town for some variety. The accommodations are very nice, beds are great, views wonderful but I don't think I would necessarily stay again due to its remote location.

You are quite right, if being located close to the center of Moab is your goal, Sorrel is probably not the best fit. Most of our guests choose Sorrel because they want to get away from the frenetic pace of life in the city, to experience instead the healing that comes from being immersed full time in a majestic red rock wilderness setting while enjoying the lush comforts and luxuries of a resort spa.

We recently stayed at the Sorrel River Ranch for a weekend, and the location of this property is perfect for a visit to Arches National Park. Our room was perfect, and the views are breathtaking. I would have rated this ranch as Excellent if the staff were more knowledgeable while we were booking our room and during our stay. I specifically asked for a room with a fireplace when I booked, and when we arrived, our room did not have a fireplace. I then called the front desk about it, and the young woman said perhaps we might like the room above ours, and someone would be over to let us view it because it was vacant at the time. I called back about 10 minutes later and spoke with a different young woman who confirmed the room above us was actually booked and there was no fireplace in that room either. We stayed in our room, and we were perfectly happy with it, but there is definitely a breakdown in communication among the staff. One day we called and asked if the pool was heated. The young woman said it was, and it was heated to about 95 degrees...it was not heated. Also, one evening for dinner we put our name on the list and were told by the hostess it wouldn't be long - about an hour later we checked back in after having a couple of cocktails - and it appears she totally forgot about us and seated us right away. Lastly, we had breakfast on our last day there, and we ordered coffee. The young woman brought out the strongest coffee I have every had, and if you knew anything about coffee, you would have known it shouldn't look like tar. I had to send it back and ask for another cup, which was much better. Our understanding is that the staff live on site, and they are all very young and friendly, but they need more training about the resort and its amenities. Perhaps they will learn more as the season progresses, but then rates should be less if we're staying while they are still in training.

Room Tip: Stay in a river view room.

Green Features: I was impressed by all of the environmental initiatives the ranch undertakes.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review about your stay. It was honest and fair and we have taken note of the lapses in communication that you mentioned. It is true that many individuals currently on staff are young. That is not the result of a policy but merely a coincidence. In fact, earlier this year the mix of ages on our staff was pretty balanced, but over time, that mix changes as new members join. We do not hire based on a prospective employee's age, but rather on their work ethic, experience and past work history.

As to the communication issues, we are taking action to ensure that those problems are never encountered by another guest at Sorrel River Ranch. Thank you for making us aware of them.
