“One of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

As with Arches NP, Canyonlands NP is a must see.

Don't miss sunrise at Mesa Arch - this is one of my favourites

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

Not that far from Arches NP, it is still relatively hidden. But it is very nice.

Been there on winter, I wish I had 4x4 to go down on one of closed roads.

“Great Canyonland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

We drove around canyonland and stopped at the overlooks. We also hiked the upheaval dome. Very few people at this time, but we could do everything we wanted.

“Must see, even if you have been to the Grand Canyon.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

While nothing can match the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, Canyonlands is perhaps more interesting because of the variety of vistas. The reality is that you should go to both, because they are both magnificent. One thing I like about Canyonlands is the ability to go out on spits of land that jut out into the canyon, if you are a little adventurous. My wife and I saw some phenomenal views that way the first time we went. Only don't make the mistake we made. We went around noon and didn't bring any water and I thought we were going to die of dehydration before we got back. Literally. And it wasn't much more than an hour round trip. Won't make that mistake again.

See my Arches NP review for more about Canyonlands and other things you should see.

“Deeply Creviced Panoramic Landscapes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

We spent a busy day visiting the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands, followed by a late afternoon visit to Dead Horse State Park. Places not to miss in Canyonlands: (in the order we visited them) Shafer Canyon Overlook, Mesa Arch (.5 mile loop from parking area – hike in clockwise direction because the elevation change will be downhill), Upheaval Dome (hike up to the rim for a peek inside, amazing), Green River Overlook, Buck Canyon Overlook, and Grand View Point Overlook. All accessible by relatively easy hikes/walks. We arrived at Dead Horse Point State Park around 4PM, intending to be there for sunset. Although a clear day, it was hazy at the Point Overlook, so we didn’t stay for sunset. The view down into the canyon of the Colorado River was amazing anyway, well worth the time to go see it. The only place to eat all day was at a kiosk offering a limited menu of sandwiches, chips, ice cream, soft drinks, etc. located just outside the Visitors Center in Dead Horse State Park. There’s a picnic table there and we had a snack waiting for it to become late afternoon before heading to the Overlook; a nice break in an otherwise busy, active day. Also, there is a nice little trail around the Visitors’ Center; a good place to just stretch your legs and enjoy the vastness of the scenery. Compared to the other national parks in Utah, these aren’t as spectacular, but still well worth spending a day to enjoy some very distinctive, beautiful panoramic landscapes.
