“Beautiful but Busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

Every campsite is beautiful. But all roadside campgrounds will be noisy. The river road (Utah state highway 128) is very busy and very narrow. Take at least a half day river trip. You can rent rafts and kayaks all over town. Or get a guide to do the work for you.

The canyon changes so much between sunrise & sunset. See them both. The Potash Rd leads to more camping along the river just west of town. There is mining traffic along this road so drive thoughtfully. This also adds to the noise level. This stretch of road has some nice petroglyph sites visible directly from road.

Also check out the Kane Creek Rd that runs along the southside of the same stretch of river. The river is wide here, so you won't hear the truck traffic so much. BLM has several campsites along this side of river too.

“Super views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

This is a lovely area to visit, even if you only drive through. Side trips to Onion Creek Canyon and Fisher Towers are very scenic, though the campground at the Towers detracts somewhat, it was much better some years ago before the state of Utah put it there. The resorts and winery along the river do not belong here and are completely out of keeping with the scenery and environment. Perhaps someone could build a few skyscaper condos as well! Efforts are being made to control the tamarisks which have really taken over the river banks the last 25 years and have blocked many of the views.

“Beautiful drive - don't miss this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Stunning. We followed this on a whim, probably 5 or 6 miles out of town and then back. I stopped 5 or 6 times to take pictures. Just beautiful. There were quite a few people camping - looks like it would be perfect, right on the river and with gorgeous cliffs above.

“A great way to Moab and the parks from Colorado”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

On a whirlwind daytrip to Arches and Canyonlands from Grand Junction we took this road (and stopped at a couple of waysides for short walks), and returned via US191. Though US191 is pleasant enough, the Riverway is certainly much nicer. Driving southwestward from I70, UT128 does not start very well. Geologists and others who have worked in the southwest have words for such countryside. But that NE end of UT 128 is technically not part of the Riverway. The drive and roadside views/stops get much better after awhile, and becomes very nice before midway.

Biking, driving, walking in the area are all nice. Camping and time on the river are probably also great, though we didn't do those.
