“Wonderful experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

My husband and I stayed at Laurel Lodge for our 36th wedding anniversary in July. The beautifully restored house holds many interesting stories, which innkeeper Chris is happy to share with you. The house even smells like my grandmother's house, very comforting, evoking pleasant memories. Every room in the house is stately. The house itself is perched overlooking the Shenandoah River, and there are aspects of the river that elicit even more stories. Chris and Ed are wonderful hosts, very friendly and welcoming. There are so many homey and helpful touches to be found from the very particular appointments in the lodging rooms, to the music books stacked on the piano bench in the living room, lots of information on the area, and so much more. And the breakfasts! They are unparalleled in quality, fresh ingredients, and uniqueness. Chris and Ed make it a point to use local produce, fruits, honey and even bacon in their morning offerings. Our stay at Laurel Lodge was perfect, and we hope to return.

My husband and I stayed at Laurel Lodge for one night in August 2012. Chris was an outstanding host who is very proud of his inn (and rightfully so). We enjoyed a peaceful evening, a quiet night's rest, and a spectacular breakfast the next morning. I was tempted to stay another night but we had to get back on the road. Don't miss this treat!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are great! You can't go wrong.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights, from August 17 to August 19. We stay at a lot of bed and breakfasts, and found this one to be outstanding. It's clear that a lot of thought and care has been put into the decor of Laurel Lodge, both inside and out, with no detail left out. It manages to seem a bit rustic (in a good way) while simultaneously being extremely clean (almost amazingly clean). Chris welcomed us an hour past the normal check-in time (with prior notice), and took the time to give us a tour of the house and explanation of how things worked. We stayed in the Cedar Room, which has an unparalleled view of the Potomac River (I think it's the Potomac) and the hills and trees across the way. The room was large, the bed was comfortable, and there was no noise to disturb us. The shower was also very nice, with a huge showerhead, and gleaming fixtures in the bathroom.
Chris served us delicious homemade breakfasts each morning, and explained the (local) origins of each dish (the breakfasts come in 3 courses). Even the fruit topping and butter for the pancakes were homemade and locally sourced.
One of our favorite parts of staying at Laurel Lodge was the neighbor cat, Chimichanga. We love cats, and we think he should be the official greeter, as he was always there to greet us or send us off. However, if you don't like cats, I don't think he will bother you.
We hope to stay again at Laurel Lodge someday, if only to hang out on the porch with Chimichanga, and enjoy the view and the yummy breakfasts. It is a nice place to take a break from the city.

I feel compelled to point you to pfbird's review below titled "We're Not Worthy", because he expresses much of how my husband and I also felt staying at Laurel Lodge. Chris and Ed are two of the kindest, top-notch B&B hosts we've ever met. They go out of their way to make you feel at home. Their B&B has so many special touches, such as their self-authored house-tour you can take at your leisure, a large assortment of brochures about the nearby tourist sites, a list of nearby restaurants and menus, a coffee and tea station, a huge wrap-around porch where one can sit anytime and enjoy the gorgeous views, and perfectly decorated, yet comfortable rooms. One of the most amazing things for my husband and me was how graciously Chris and Ed accommodated us regarding our food allergies. I let Chris know of our allergies right away when I booked the room and that we'd be glad with a few simple breakfast items. Chris very kindly followed up and consulted with us about specifics we could and couldn't eat. Each morning we were served a delicious multi-course breakfast custom-made to suit our dietary restrictions. This was more than we ever dreamed of, since we've stayed at many B&B's where they don't have the expertise or ingredients to safely accommodate gluten-free or lactose-free (plus vegetarian!). Chris and Ed are pros. We wholeheartedly add our 5-star rating to the others here.

Room Tip: In case you have any hesitancy about climbing stairs, it might be helpful to know that the staircase...

My husband and son stayed at the Laurel Lodge on a trip to Harper's Ferry. They were both very pleased with the lodge and the innkeepers. Both enjoyed the breakfast and the convenience to Harper's Ferry. My husband wants to go back some day with me. Looking forward to the visit.

Anywhere would be tranquil compared to New York where we had just spent four days but a couple of hours on the back porch watching fireflies in the gloaming was a true antidote.
Chris and Ed were welcoming and informative. Breakfast was served at the table in tasting menu fashion - a mystery until served together with Chris's detailed description . All "historic" as Michael Winner would say.
Restaurants nearby are OK but you won't find anything beyond burgers, pizza , the occasional steak and ubiquitous crab cakes.
Treat yourself to a stay at Laurel Lodge. We would return.

What can we say except to heap more praise on Chris and Ed and their extraordinary B&B? They could write the book on running a B&B -- not just a book, but THE book.

It's all about details in this early 20th Century craftsman house perched on a ridge overlooking the Potomac. From the high thread-count sheets to the rich breakfast menu, it's service with a genuine smile.

Thoughtful touches abound. A fridge full of soft drinks, fresh-baked goodies to welcome guests arriving in the late afternoon, a book on Abraham Lincoln in our room, and a floor fan in the room to supplement air conditioning strained by the hottest weather in years.

But the icing on the cake is the thoughtful hospitality shown by Chris Craig. A story will illustrate what we're talking about. An hour after we had checked out after a one-night stay, my wife's eyeglasses got smashed by the car trunk lid. We drove back to Chris for help, and he hauled out tape, Crazy Glue and all but the kitchen sink in an effort to repair them. Finally, Chris wrote down directions to his optometrist's office, where we ended up getting new frames. Talk about going the extra mile.

Now, days later, we continue to savor the memory. Thanks, guys.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, but they don't all have en suite bathrooms. You need to ask.
