“bring history alive with the help of "O' Be Joyfull"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2009

We visited Harpers Ferry, WA, in April 2009. Rick Garland of "O be Joyfull" had been recommended to us as a tour guide by Florence Tarbox at Battlefield Bed and Breakfast in Gettysburg. All four of us are civil war re-enactors from the UK and were interested in the civil war history of Harpers Ferry. Rick's 1 & 1/4 hour walking tour started with a warming cup of chicory coffee, like the confederate soldiers would have had, this authentic touch set the tone for the tour. We noticed that Rick wore his historical knowledge like a second skin, and was as at home in his confederate soldiers uniform as he was in his subject. It was admirable how he was able to weave together a coherent picture of the history of Harper's Ferry from the many strands and events that make Harpers Ferry significant to American history and culture -on more levels than just the American Civil War. We experienced Rick as a person who lives and breathes his knowledge which really enhances the tour experience and we loved it! We only had one day in Harpers Ferry and would recommend a tour with Rick to get the best out of a short visit. Harpers Ferry has a stunning setting and is build into rock so take good walking shoes. There are so many sights to see you will need a good camera. It rained during our visit, but being from the UK, that was not a problem, but a water proof coat would be advised. Great tour, very interesting and enjoyable, very reasonable priced, would book it again at the drop of a hat!

“Must-Do Tour of Harper's Ferry!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2009

This was an outstanding tour and one that I would recommend to anyone and everyone thinking of going to Harpers Ferry. Just envision cascading mountains, winding streets, narrow passageways up through historic streets! That's Harpers Ferry! Now imagine trying to navigate the very basic question of where to park and you get the idea that Harpers Ferry without Rick Garland is like traveling overseas without a passport!

Rick will introduce you to the history of Harpers Ferry, take you down the streets, show you incredible sights that I promise you would not have even seen from the road nor been able to even imagine finding on foot -- and before you, the cavernous beauty of Harpers Ferry will suddenly be understandable and profound!

If you are like we were, there is NO WAY we want to make a long trip across the country and then "wing it" when we arrive. Rick ensures that you will learn SO MUCH about Harpers Ferry that you will want to return, to take them back to Rick for another tour! If you think that the National Park Service will provide information or a guide or even much insight into the site, think again (although all the employees we met were incredibly nice, there is just a difference with a private tour).

Rick's rates are affordable and when the privately owned Harpers Ferry shops are closed (as they were when we arrived looking for a cup of coffee), you will be welcomed into Rick's cozy warm office and offered a cup of chickory coffee before your tour, and treated to history! DO NOT MISS Rick's tour in Harpers Ferry -- he is a national treasure!
