“Holiday Harper's Ferry AP US History Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2015

I took my two teenaged sons on an educational tour of key historical landmarks in U.S. history over their winter break. Rick led us on a fascinating, in-depth, walking tour of Harper's Ferry and its rich history. We were spellbound by his animated storytelling for over 5 hours! Not only does he make a striking impression in period clothing, but his Socratic method of instruction is very engaging. I highly recommend this tour for both casual travelers and dedicated history buffs.

“The Best Living Historian Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2014

On November 16th, our group of about 14 from the Knights of Columbus, the St. John Neumann Council of Elkridge, Maryland, went on the best historical tour I have ever attended. Rick Garland, of "O' Be Joyful" historical Tours was the most engaging guide. Our day began by attending 11:00 Mass at St. Peter's, then we had a bite of lunch at The Potomac Grille....delicious meal! At the beginning of our tour, Rick explained step-by-step what our visit would encompass, giving us the option of stepping out if anyone needed to leave early. Rick gives a chronological history tour of Harper's Ferry which begins long before John Brown and his raiders ever stepped foot in the town. Being mid-November, the afternoon was chilly but most were warmly dressed and we moved around at just the right times. I have never come across a tour guide or docent who is more knowledgeable than Rick Garland. Some of us stayed WAY past the time set aside, and we ended up in the 3rd floor parlor of the Town's Inn on High Street for coffee, hot chocolate and the life story of John Brown. It was a perfect end to our Harper's Ferry tour! Rick also has a wonderful singing voice which he used on several of our stops. We left with a list of recommended reading material on the town should we wish to delve further into the past. Go on this tour....you will not be disappointed!

“Exceeded our expectations!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2014

We were able to take a Halloween night tour with Rick and it was amazing! He does a fantastic job of mixing Harpers Ferry history into the actual ghost stories! You never get bored of either one. Two stories were more gruesome than I expected but not bad. My husband said I was expecting the Casper the Friendly Ghost Tour! :) The $12 admission seems almost a steal! I would definitely go back to take a history tour with Rick, a very talented story teller~

“A Must Do in Harpers Ferry”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2014

Rick Garland's historical tour is a must do when visiting Harpers Ferry. Rick makes history come alive with his knowledge and storytelling ability. Rick's narratives are delivered as you walk through the streets and buildings of Harpers Ferry and enjoy the spectacular scenery. The tour lasts four hours but time passes quickly as you become immersed in the long and varied history of the area. Well worth the time and money.

“Worth Every Penny”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2014

Rick makes the history of Harper's Ferry come alive with his colourful stories and encyclopedic knowledge of Harper's Ferry history. He's a natural storyteller and very funny to boot. There's much more to Harper's Ferry than John Brown and the raid on the armory; the history goes back past George Washington - back to the early 1700's. Rick makes every minute of it come to life. Definitely worth the $22 investment and the 3hrs time investment. After the tour, you can walk around historic Harper's Ferry, see the Wax museum, Storer College and John Brown's 'fort', Not to mention the breathtaking scenery at the confluence of the Shenendoah and Potomac rivers...especially during the fall when the leaves are changing. Sigh.... Bringing my parents back next year!
