Owner description: This vintage wax museum opened in 1963 and has hosted thousands of visitors in its many years of operation. Mr. Dorfman, the artist of the realistic hand-made figures, is the very same gifted man who also crafted the figures for Gettysburg. The John Brown Wax Museum is perfect for small groups or large school field trips. It truly does make history "come alive." The museum is seasonal, opening for weekends in March but in April through November, it stays open 7 days a week. Spring and fall hours are 9:00 until 4:30 and summer hours are 10:00 until 5:30. For countless generations, this has been a "must do" activity.

“How kitchy!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

This was an interesting little place. It was hot as blazes the day we visited. There was a wrinkly old man collecting the meager entrance fee (was maybe $7 or so). Then you are on your own. You walk through this old OLD house up and down stairs and all around. Not good if you can't do stairs. Around each twist and turn is a diorama with wax figurines - some have buttons that you press and you will hear a narrative of what is being depicted in each scene.

“Good objective history”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

Not very good value for money. Sort of dated statues and old electronics which took coaxing to work well...but, on a positive note, a well rounded historic protrayal of John Brown.

“Good way to learn with the children”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

While I would not consider this a "must do" attraction, it was interesting, well presented and a good way to learn about John Brown when visiting Harpers Ferry with children. The house itself is something to see, but be prepared to climb staircases. As others have mentioned, it is a little overpriced, but not so much that the price would deter a visit. The tour is shorter than expected. If you have extra time while in the area or just want to get out of the elements for a few minutes, then this is a good stop.

“Not Horrible”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

It was ok, the story was well done as you went throughout the museum and the wax figures were well done, however, when we bought the tickets, the lady at the front was pretty rude, and not very helpful. I also felt that for the price, the museum was a bit small.
