This was our 2nd stay at The Rittenhouse Inn. A few years ago we stayed at a suite in the main house and although I didn’t give it a review at the time it would have been a 5 star rating if I had.
This stay we stayed at The Rittenhouse Cottage which is a block south
of the main Inn. It is a wonderful place! Basically it is the front half a large house. The downstairs consist of a front porch with a two person chair swing that is a great place to spend an afternoon. Inside the first level has a parlor, a living room area with a fireplace and a kitchenette with a mini-frig, coffee maker, microwave
and sink. The upstairs was the Master bedroom suite with a double whirlpool tub and bathroom. The entire place has well decorated and well done. It has lovely Victorian touches throughout and looks like what I imagine a grandmother’s guesthouse would be like if grandma had a decorator, a gardener, a maintenance and housekeeping staff!
The staff was also great. They were always pleasant and friendly. Always complete with answers to any questions we had about the area and offering to assist whenever they could. For instance, when we asked during breakfast if they had a paper there they said they did not but would try to get us one if we wanted, we didn’t want them to go to that much trouble just wondered if they already had one. Another time we asked if they knew the day’s weather forecast, they didn’t but were glad to look it up on their internet terminal for us.
As I mentioned in the tag line title, we originally came a couple years ago for the rooms and were so taken by not just the rooms but the quality of the meals that we came back for the rooms and the dining. We had the full course breakfast there both days, a lunch and a dinner and all were excellent meals, well prepared, well presented and served by a great staff. All menus were gourmet quality
and had menu choices that include fresh local cuisine such as Lake Trout or Lake Superior Whitefish. The wine list also included some local brewery selections. The wait staff was also first rate. We immediately recognized one of their veteran servers who took great care of us on our first visit a couple years ago, and in talking to her discovered she has been there 26 years now! I can’t imagine there
are very many hospitality providers who inspire that kind of loyalty.
I hope we get to keep seeing her on our return visits. On our visit we also had the good luck to have some young European waiters and waitresses. They we truly a delight to visit with. Ther was one from Spain, Poland and Romania and I imagine there were others I did not meet. The caveat I have to give here is that I did find out that they
are only there for the summer-fall season and they don’t have them every year, only when they can get local housing for them, but if the
are there when you visit you will surely enjoy them and their fun personalities.
While the Rittenhouse Cottage is at the high end side of the variety of rooms they have to offer, if you like luxury accommodations and privacy and can afford it I would encourage anyone to indulge themselves and try it.
