This was our 2nd stay at The Rittenhouse Inn. A few years ago we stayed at a suite in the main house and although I didn’t give it a review at the time it would have been a 5 star rating if I had.

This stay we stayed at The Rittenhouse Cottage which is a block south
of the main Inn. It is a wonderful place! Basically it is the front half a large house. The downstairs consist of a front porch with a two person chair swing that is a great place to spend an afternoon. Inside the first level has a parlor, a living room area with a fireplace and a kitchenette with a mini-frig, coffee maker, microwave
and sink. The upstairs was the Master bedroom suite with a double whirlpool tub and bathroom. The entire place has well decorated and well done. It has lovely Victorian touches throughout and looks like what I imagine a grandmother’s guesthouse would be like if grandma had a decorator, a gardener, a maintenance and housekeeping staff!

The staff was also great. They were always pleasant and friendly. Always complete with answers to any questions we had about the area and offering to assist whenever they could. For instance, when we asked during breakfast if they had a paper there they said they did not but would try to get us one if we wanted, we didn’t want them to go to that much trouble just wondered if they already had one. Another time we asked if they knew the day’s weather forecast, they didn’t but were glad to look it up on their internet terminal for us.

As I mentioned in the tag line title, we originally came a couple years ago for the rooms and were so taken by not just the rooms but the quality of the meals that we came back for the rooms and the dining. We had the full course breakfast there both days, a lunch and a dinner and all were excellent meals, well prepared, well presented and served by a great staff. All menus were gourmet quality
and had menu choices that include fresh local cuisine such as Lake Trout or Lake Superior Whitefish. The wine list also included some local brewery selections. The wait staff was also first rate. We immediately recognized one of their veteran servers who took great care of us on our first visit a couple years ago, and in talking to her discovered she has been there 26 years now! I can’t imagine there
are very many hospitality providers who inspire that kind of loyalty.
I hope we get to keep seeing her on our return visits. On our visit we also had the good luck to have some young European waiters and waitresses. They we truly a delight to visit with. Ther was one from Spain, Poland and Romania and I imagine there were others I did not meet. The caveat I have to give here is that I did find out that they
are only there for the summer-fall season and they don’t have them every year, only when they can get local housing for them, but if the
are there when you visit you will surely enjoy them and their fun personalities.

While the Rittenhouse Cottage is at the high end side of the variety of rooms they have to offer, if you like luxury accommodations and privacy and can afford it I would encourage anyone to indulge themselves and try it.

As a group of three, it can be difficult to stay in a bed and breakfast. Thankfully, the ORI offers a room in the property across the street from the main building with two queen beds. Silvernail 5 is a tastefully appointed, spacious room with very comfortable furnishing and plenty of room for three ladies with a lot of luggage! The location is outstanding if you plan activities in the downtown area, and parking was a breeze. Sure, there is some street noise during the day, but we are not the types that spend the day in our room. The best part? The dining room is just across the street and offers outstanding local cuisine (containing fresh, high quality ingredients) for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We indulged in the five course dinner one evening and the full breakfast each morning we stayed. I am not sure why some reviewers called to food “bland” or “uninspired”. I am a city girl with pretty high standards, I do a lot of cooking, I have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the country and I feel that I am a pretty good judge of food. I feel that those who speak poorly of the ORI kitchen either don’t know what they are talking about or dined on a freakishly bad night. Please, give the Old Rittenhouse a try and judge for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

My husband and I stayed in Room #11. It was wonderful. I had read the previous reviews on tripadvisor and was a little apprehensive by some of the negative reviews. I do feel most of the people with the negative reviews are not familiar with staying at B & B's. The owners were more than friendly, greeted us and showed us to our room with enthusiasm . The room was beautiful, filled with beautiful antiques, whirlpool, steam shower, and a view of lake superior. Easy walk to town and access to the ferry. It made for a very relaxful and romantic getaway.

  • Liked — Beautiful B and B experience
  • Disliked — 2nd night, fire was not reset, wine was not restocked and we did not get new soap and shampoo

My husband and I just came back from a three night stay at the Old Rittenhouse Inn in Bayfield. I have wanted to stay there for many years, and we finally did for our 30th wedding anniversary. What a wonderful stay we had! The bedroom was very sumptious and beautiful. We enjoyed a fire all set up for us every evening. Our view of the lake was incredible.

Several reviewers have said some negative remarks on here, but my feeling is they don't have a lot of experience with bed and breakfast inns. My husband and I have stayed at probably 30-40 over the years, and the best thing about them is they are all different. No two are exactly the same. That is the fun of going - to have another great discovery! This inn is a beautiful, classic example of Victorian decorating at it's finest. The Victorians used a lot of dark, rich colors and heavy fabrics. I found that to be acurate here and very tastefully done. I loved all the fantastic antiques featured at the Chateau and the main inn. But one of the things I liked best was the artwork throughout.

We ate the full breakfast every morning and it was out of this world! Well worth the extra money over the continental. The Wild Rice Pancakes with apples were to die for. We also ate dinner there one night and I have to tell you my slow roasted pork chop was two inches thick and fell apart with my fork. No knife needed and I didn't give any to my husband like I usually do when I am full. I was practicly moaning with each bite, it was so good.

The owners were wonderfully friendly and hospitable and even gave us a tour of all the rooms unoccupied in the main inn. How fun! We stayed in the Master suite in the Chateau and the king bed was soft and plush. There was not a speck of dust anywhere, and the floors sparkled in our bathroom. The only small complaint we have was that the shower head is low (we are tall), and we had to bend over to rinse ourselves off. Also, the water pressure could have been better. But these are minor details. (Can you tell I am married to a master plumber and probably more picky?)

We would not hesitate to stay again. Next time, we want to try room 11! Thanks Mark and Wendy for a great stay!

We were really looking forward to visiting the Old Rittenhouse to celebrate our anniversary, but left very disappointed. The staff seemed a bit disinterested and aloof, but we overlooked it. The food was adequate, but didn't seem quite enough. Our room was also not as nice as advertised. Even though things were not quite what we expected, we still tried to focus on enjoying ourselves. We were looking forward to a nice fire in our room that evening, but had a problem with the wood not burning properly . We brought this to the attention of one of the staff members twice, but all we were given was some newspaper. My husband spent most of the evening frustrated trying to start and keep the fire going, which did not lead to an enjoyable evening for either of us. When we later brought this to the attention of the owner the next day, he was rude and insulting. The overall rating would probably be higher if we were not for this response. Needless to say, we cannot recommend the Old Rittenhouse.

Management response from Old_Rit_Innkeeper, Manager
(Management representative)
Jul 13, 2007
Let us begin by saying that we regret that these guests had the experience outlined above, and we sincerely hope that they might be willing to give us another chance to exceed their expectations in the future.

As we’ve underscored in each of our responses to complaints about our staff, customer service has been our primary concern since we went into business over thirty years ago. We continue to strive for excellence in this aspect of our Inn. We are dismayed that these guests had the poor experience with our staff that they did, but maintain that we try very hard to go above and beyond our guests’ expectations whenever possible. We value our guests beyond all else—even those who have negative experiences while staying with us—because they give us an opportunity to evaluate and improve on our level of service.

In response to the firewood complaint that these guests had, we apologize for the inconvenience. In such a situation, we hope that our staff would offer a new batch of wood for the room in case that turned out to be the source of the problem. We will certainly encourage them to take such a measure should this issue arise in the future.

In regards to the complaint that this guest voiced about “rude and insulting” comments from “the owner,” we can say with great certainty that these guests never spoke with anyone in management about their problem. The management team is a welcoming group of people that is quite attuned to the guests’ needs and concerns. When a problem is brought to our attention, we do everything in our power to appease the guest. We ask that our staff do the same.

Again, it all comes back to the emphasis we put on customer service. Our guests always have been and will continue to be the most important part of our business—without them, we wouldn’t be here.
