San Franciscans over 40 remember San Francisco's premier place for ice-cream sundaes, and amazing cakes: Blum's on Union Square or California Street. Blum's was particularly famous for its whipped-cream filled coffee crunch cake. For thousands of families, it was the only possible birthday cake. Blum's is gone, and various bakeries have tried to duplicate it, but only Yasukochi's Sweet Stop has succeeded it. I bought one last week, and brought it in to my office. Everyone loved it. Crunchy, sweet and perfectly made. It evoked lots of good memories. The bakery is buried in the back of a small grocery store in Japantown. It is definitely worth looking for.
