desk so helpful, charming rooms, unique, easy to get there, don't use giant suv, lot is tight, so much nicer than a holiday inn which would be the same price or more, great value, block is a bit seedy but totally safe, another world once youre inside the front gate

We first stayed here in 1988 as students. We lived in SF from 1989-91 and love to return not as tourists but like we live here. Marina Motel is like having a weekend apartment right in the city. Parking is free, the rooms are clean, comfortable and some have a full kitchen with oven, stove, micro, coffee maker, fully sized fridge. It is perfect. Steps to dining on Chesnut St, 2 minutes walking from the Palace of Fine Art, biking and jogging trails, just outside the Presidio. Each unit has windows, flower boxes and there is a center courtyard area which is quiet with benches to allow you to sit out and sip a glass of wine on a warm day. It has been modernized and the rooms are nicely appointed. Highly recommend- great for the price, a particularly in the Marina District.

We stayed here for three nights and got a room close to the street. With 160$/ night this was out most expensive hotel during a long trip.
The rooms are nice, we had a lot of space and the hotel is located in a nice part of the city.
But there are some things that should have worked better for this price.
The heater was either overheated and made some noise or was out of order and the room were quiet cold.
The staff was not very friendly and they couldn't even tell us where the next cinema was.
The wifi only worked sometimes and was very slow.
We had two rooms. In the one faced to the yard we slept, but only with earplugs. In the other room (close to the street) we had a tv. But even this sometimes was hardly to understand because it was. So noisy.
All in all we had a good time here. But I do not think that we will come back again.

This place was charming, but I would absolutely avoid the units facing Lombard St. (#41-50) The room we got was advertised as "street view", and we expected that street noise would be an issue, but the biggest problem was that each unit is over its own garage, and it was pretty stressful to either enter or exit a small garage with a compact SUV (Dodge Journey was a fairly snug fit) directly off of a very busy arterial like Lombard. If you don't have a car, obviously this would not be an issue. The courtyard units would not have this issue. Great location, around the corner to many restaurants on Chestnut, and a less than ten minute walk to Crissy field to take in the sunset. Price is very reasonable for the location.

Room Tip: avoid rooms 41-50 facing Lombard if you want to park.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012 via mobile

Four of us stayed here for four nights in August and were given rooms 19 & 20 which are two adjoining rooms at the back of the hotel with a shared bathroom between them. Ok if you get on well with your friends. Bathroom can lock either of the 2 connecting doors to avoid any embarrassing moments but just remember to unlock them afterwards otherwise your friends wont thank you. Rooms were large enough for our needs and we had the Fridge and Microwave in our room. The hotel is very pretty with flowers and plants everywhere around the courtyard. There are garages for parking and are open to all guests. You just park in any empty one which might be in one on Lombard street but that's not a problem. Staff were very accommodating. When we said we wanted to check out before Reception opened in the morning they checked the night before to ensure the garage we were parked in was not being blocked by other guests car. We stayed whilst a sailing race was on so space was a bit as the courtyard and some garages had boats and large SUV's in and around them but it was not a problem. The place is very relaxing to stay in, due to the way the place is maintained and it's layout. We took the number 30 trolley bus into the city centre plus we walked along the front which took us about 50 minutes and was a pleasant walk. The staff were very friendly and helpful The only minus point was the staff recommended we to go to Judy's which we did but were left disappointed as we felt ripped off. Maybe the staff didn't want to serve us just a snack and drinks at lunchtime but that didn't excuse them adding things to the bill we didnt have or telling us that items we chose off the menu didn't come with certain things when the menu clearly stated they did. The bill was also in undecipherable writing so it was difficult to work what we had been charged for but as the bill was modest we paid up and left. We mentioned this to the hotel staff who were surprised and apologetic but it wasn't their fault. All in all a little gem of a hotel in a large city and good value for money.

We enjoyed our stay at the Marina Motel. We got a courtyard room because we had heard of the noise on Lombard St. There was still some, but not too much, traffic sound until about 11 pm, and then it was quiet. The room was small, but clean and comfortable. Parking is included below the rooms. You can catch the # 30 Muni bus a couple of blocks away on Chestnut, so it was easy to get anywhere without driving. I felt we got an excellent value in a good place, and we will stay here again.

Room Tip: Get a courtyard room for less street noise.

Really nice place to stay. Had a room in the center courtyard and the building was beautiful! Amazingly beautiful flowers growing all over the buildings. The garner saw me admiring them and in talking to him found out that that they were very old and he had cared for them for many years. Hotel personnel were very nice, location was good for us and they had free parking.
They gave us coupons for brearkfast at a restaurant called Judy's, and it was fantastic! It had really fantastic high quality food at would go to great lengths to eat there again if ever in the area.
