“Bad service from this eco-friendly hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

This is an eco-friendly hotel but the staff is not friendly at all. Completely no customer service.

They mismanaged my room reservations & they expect a single lady to move to their sister hotel 20minutes walk away at almost midnight without offering any assistance. Their "take it of leave it" attitude is beyond bad.

If you fancy testing your patience, you can give this hotel a try. Not recommended for ladies travelling alone.

it's less expensive than other places in the city but be forewarned (1) that it's on a busy corner traffic wise so some of the rooms are quite noisy and (2) that it's a rough neighborhood. I was on the second floor and straight down from my window there was a drug dealer servicing cars that pulled up. There are many homeless people in this part of town and the walk from 7th and Market to Powell and Market reeked of urine, and there was more open drug dealing. It is amazing that there is so much wealth in this city and nothing is done in the form of housing and public restrooms, and it's just getting worse with each passing year. During the daytime it's easier to walk around, but when it gets dark you lose what secure feeling you may have had, especially if your small, female, or vulnerable in any way. On Saturday evening I saw a young Japanese couple from the hotel so frightened of the people they had to negotiate on the street that they ran the last half-block back to their room.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive stay, try one of the places on Lombard. It may be as...

Dear Jaynka,

I am sorry to hear that you had a less than favorable impression about the location of our hotel.

Our neighborhood, SoMA (South of Market) is an eclectic and diverse area and contributes to the overall makeup of the city of San Francisco. Although by far not the luxurious part of, "The City," SoMA is continually thriving with planned restaurant and cafe openings as well as major corporations that have recently moved their headquarters to SoMA, namely Twitter, Zynga and Dolby Laboratories.

We hope that you do return back to San Francisco very soon and revisit our wonderful neighborhood of SoMA.

Best regards,

the hotel is renewed in a 'backpackers' like design for young travelers. the rooms are all were equipped and very convenient though the location on 7th street & Mission is a bit noisy for late wake-ups. a bit overpriced comparing to other options nearby.

Room Tip: avoid rooms facing Mission or 7th street

Dear Amir362,

Your comments about your stay with us are much appreciated and we thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and the Trip Advisor community! Being the first hotel in San Francisco with a concsience by taking a green approach, we pride ourselves in inspiring the, "good in us all," with our motto of, "Renew, Reuse, Relax!" Our hotel rates average to be on the affordable end of the spectrum compared to the hotels located in the tourists areas, such as Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf or the Financial District. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to San Francisco in the future!

As everybody else mentioned, the hotel is located in a part of town that even during the day is best avoided (homeless people everywhere, a nearby ATM was 'guarded' by some big dude with brass knuckles, etc...). The cable car is sort-of in walking distance, but the walk itself is the wrong kind of 'exciting'.

Another bad thing is that the hotel has very poor noise insulation. The street is quite loud (lots of noisy diesel buses) even after closing both inner and outer sashes of the window. To make matters worse, you can hear the plumbing from all over the hotel. Every time the water runs somewhere, you hear it too. I woke up at 5am and already every minute or so the other guests were letting the water run (I guess they were woken up by the noise and decided they might as well get up). This is the first hotel ever where I actually needed to use earplugs.

The room was supposedly a double, but it had a narrow bed with only a single reading lamp on one side of the bed. Also there was a single set of towels. There was also very little space to put your stuff: given the size of the room they could have easily placed another/a larger table or some other furniture in it. Also for no apparent reason the carpet was wet in several places, some of which did not dry even after two days.

The sink on top of the toilet reservoir seems like a nice idea, but: 1) it's a little hard to access as the toilet is in the way, and 2) the hotel does not provide you with a bar of soap, everything is in wall-mounted dispensers, and there is no soap dispenser in the bathroom, you have to crawl/reach into the shower to get the shower gel, or go to the sink/mirror in the room itself, which does have a soap dispenser, but then you may just as well wash your hands there.

We were disappointed with this hotel. We did not book or choose it ourselves (it was part of a self drive package), so we can't comment on price/value. However, out of the 11 different hotels on this trip, it was by far the worst, and in fact the only one which we were not satisfied with, although some of the others were quite basic.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: I think you can choose a good room by staying in a different hotel!

Dear Henk V,

Thank you for your review about your recent stay with us. I am sorry to hear that you had a less than favorable impression about our hotel and our accommodations. As with most structures and hotels in the city of San Francisco, the Good Hotel was originally built as a hotel 101-years ago, recently celebrating it's anniversary this past May. Architecture, square footage and style has definitely emerged from the early 1900's compared to the newer, big box, hotels; as the saying goes, "they don't build them liked they used to."

The SoMA (South of Market) area is an eclectic and diverse area which contributes to the overall makeup of the city of San Francisco. Although not necessarily the most luxurious part of town, SoMA is continually thriving with planned restaurant openings as well as major corporations moving into our neighborhood. Again, your feedback is much appreciated and we apologize that we fell short on your expectations. We hope to welcome you back to San Francisco and SoMA in the very near future.

I and my friend booked a double-beds and found a single-bed one! AWFUL!!!!! And awful also they way they did NOT admit the mistake they did. They kept saying it was a double-beds, even if in the bathroom there was a towel for just one person.

I really suggest to pay REALLY A LOT of attention during the reservation!

This hotel was clean and comfortable. It provided good value for money and in general was in a good location as it is a few block from Market Street- we caught a cable car from there to the seafront- very convenient! Staff helpful and accommodating!
As other reviewers have said, there were some homeless people around the hotel, however I wouldn't let this deter you from staying in this hotel. They didn't bother us and we just made sure we were extra aware & on groups. Would go back.

Dear Bethan F,

Thank you for your review about your recent stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our hotel during your visit. I am glad to hear that you were able to explore all the sights, sounds and wonders of San Francisco that are easily accessible from our hotel.

We also appreciate sharing your personal experience about our wonderful, little neighborhood of SoMA. The SoMA (South of Market) area, although not necessarily the most luxurious part of town, is continually thriving with planned restaurant openings as well as major corporations moving into our neighborhood and as you mentioned, just a few blocks from the major attractions of San Francisco.

Thank you again for your feedback and we hope that you'll stay with us again on your next trip to San Francisco!

The Good Hotel is a fair place to stay in the City. The staff are very helpful, flexible (we needed a roll-away), and courteous. The hotel is an older one that has been cleaned up... The beds are very comfortable.
The only bummer about the hotel is its location. It's not too far from the Civic Center MUNI (Market St), so it's not the distance, but the surrounding neighborhood, particularly between the hotel and Market, is pretty rough for downtown, and we were hit up by "spangers" and dealers just a few time too many, even for a downtown street. In the block between the Good Hotel and Market there are several old, dark, falling-apart hotels that look like something you'd find in a '70's ghetto: iron barred doorways, rooms by the day or week, low/no lights, dirty windows, etc. I watched SFPD arrest a dealer across the street from the hotel, and they also fanned out into a nearby low-down hotel during the incident. It's not that all that was particularly terrifying, or ruined the trip, but it did cause us to function at a higher level of security awareness and hyper-vigilance than what would have been nice for a vacation trip to the City. Still, I'd stay at the Good Hotel again, just wanted to honest about the neighborhood it's in, esp. for those on foot with kids, etc.
