“Excellent location, a bit on the small side”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Rooms are very clean and comfortable, but you had only a tiny bit of space - a problem if you have a lot of luggage. We only had large backpacks and felt cramped. However, the size of neither the bed nor the bathroom suffers from this lack of space. The bathroom actually felt proportionally large compared the the room itself.

We had a room facing the back, which faces other buildings with courtyards, so it has the potential of being noisy in the even of parties, but we had no such issues during our stay.

Staff was professional, well-informed, and friendly. You would expect them to get jaded about the whole film history, but they were proud and happy to share all they knew about it.

The best thing about the hotel for us was the location - you can walk to all parts downtown easily enough.

“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights in February after his parents recommended it. It lived up to our expectations. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were in good condition and nicely furnished. However, after showering, the bath tub would take a while to empty. The most noteworthy trait was its location which was a 10 min walk from union square. That said, it is right above an area called Tenderloin which you don't want to be near at night.

Overall, it was a very nice hotel with great staff and a great price and we would definitely stay here again if we were to return to San Fran.

“Decent value, interesting character”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

I was intrigued by the Hitchcock theme of the hotel, however the hotel fell a little short in its execution. I requested a room on a higher floor facing the street so I could take advantage of the bay windows. While the windows were great, the room got uncomfortably warm during the day when the sun was at full strength. The hotel has no A/C, and only one window was able to be opened (however there was no screen and opened directly unto a fire escape, which didn't make me feel safe keeping it propped open.) There was a ceiling fan, as well as an old vented fan in the wall. Overnight, the room returned to a more manageable temperature. The room itself was very large and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The furniture looked a little low budget, though and the phones were pretty old. The bathroom was a good size. Everything was very clean, so that was a major bonus. The other major bonus is the location. It's in the "TenderNob," just below Nob Hill (where the hotels get really expensive) and above the Tenderloin (where you just don't want to stay.) I felt safe in the area, as a single female, even at night. There are a lot of little restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and bars very near the hotel. Only a few short slightly uphill blocks to the California Cable line to the Ferry Building/Embarcadero. On foot, it isn't a very long walk to Union Square or The Ferry Building (20 min to Ferry Building, by my estimate, and downhill!) It's no luxury hotel, but definitely satisfactory enough that I would stay again (if able to find a low rate.)

Dear Renee E,

We appreciate that you took the time to share your review about your recent stay with us and the Trip Advisor community. I am sorry to hear that you had a less than favorable impression about our hotel and our accommodations. In regards to not having air conditioned rooms, San Francisco tends to stay be on the cooler side especially with the year round bay breeze but when we are graced with that lovely sunshine, it's understandable it might be a little too much for some. Thanks again and we do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.
