“Nice hotel - glad work paid tho”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013 via mobile

Nice hotel in a great downtown location. Nicely designed although maybe looking a little tired now? Not fussed by that though. Nice bar and food, but not the best value. Seems SF is generally expensive though so the W isn't different in this respect. Glad work picked up the tab!

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your recent stay. The décor in the hotel is inspired by the grid that makes up the San Francisco map and the fog that so often rolls through. I’m glad that you liked it. The Living Room bad and Upstairs Bar are both great places to unwind after a long day. We hope to welcome you back soon.

Best,
Alexandra W.

Too irritated and disappointed to do more than summarize: difficult to enter from street with car to disembark, parking fees excessive (management says "competitive"), reception virtually non-existent/cramped, room that was confirmed online was unavailable on arrival, room design is failed form over failed function.

On the last point, closet is abysmally small though there is adjacent space to expand. The closet hanger bar is at mid-level, preventing one from hanging pants & long coats (typically worn in S.F.). The upper portion of the closet space is wasted. No full-size ironing board; no counter space to utilize the 1/3rd size board. Little counter space in bathroom for amenities and sink faucet obstructs full utility of the sink. Unusable decorative cabinets in the room while the few, shallow drawers provided are inadequate for storage. Hotels at 1/4 the rate have triple the storage space (closets, drawers, counters). Never found light switches for the under-cabinet desk lighting. Air-conditioning vent blows directly at the person's head on the left-side of bed. Decor is a cheap imitation of modern, very kitschy, reminiscent of low-budget reality room makeover show design quality. The mobile device charger caddy is upside down making label-reading inconvenient. For clean lines, vents should be same color as wall they are on.

After turning off the a/c, the bed was comfortable and the powered-drapery welcome (though a swich should be located by the bed).

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent stay with us. Being in a very popular location in San Francisco, we sometimes see an influx of guests checking-in from all directions. We do our best to make this process as comfortable as possible by offering complimentary beverages and ample seating.

Our rooms are designed to match the lifestyle and function of the city it is in while also pulling elements that make W Hotels a memorable experience. I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the design and function of the guest rooms. If you ever need any assistance throughout your stay, please call Whatever/Whenever. The Talent is always happy to help and create the best stay possible.

I have to admit, I'm a fan of W hotels. Lounge, gym and look&feel of the rooms make me smile wherever I stay in a W around the world. The SF locations is no different and very vibrant. DJ's in the lounge, lots of cocktails lovers. Only back draw in this location is the noise from the neighbors. Mine really enjoyed each other and I could hear all the stages they went through at night.

Room Tip: get quite neighbors

There are always lots of options on where to stay in San Francisco, (even within the SPG family) but the W is my go-to. First off, getting to the hotel is easy to and from SFO, its right off the freeway and there is almost never any of the crazy traffic like up in Union Sq. Lack of traffic also means its quiet, for a city hotel there will always be some noise, but I have never had an issue at the W. Also the location is amazing for business and pleasure... its across the street from Moscone center and everywhere in the financial district is a 5-10 min walk.
Enough about the location, the W really shines in my opinion because of the ambiance... unlike almost every other hotel, the you actually want to be seen in the lobby / bar area. It seems like people from the city (not just hotel guests) flock to the bar at happy hour (i would too.. the cocktails are delicious). The barfood is great (try the flatbreads... amazing) and there is actually alot of seating..

Now... that being said, it is a very busy hotel but I really found that the staff did everything possible to make my stay the best it could be, and I appreciate that.

Room Tip: All the rooms that I have stayed in were great... some were over the street, but the noise wasnt not...

Green Features: Its a LEED certified hotel.. this is really a neat accomplishment. If only all hotels were followed in the W's example..

Hi Jon,

Thank you for making us as your hotel of choice in San Francisco. We have the best location for getting just about anywhere but are very convenient for convention goers and business travelers. While our location is great and a little quieter than high traffic areas, we are very lively. Our Living Room Bar is very popular among locals and hotel guests alike. I agree that the flatbreads are delicious as are our cocktails. Both are crafted from local ingredients. In spite of the busy atmosphere of the hotel, our talent always ensures that our guests are well taken care of. We look forward to welcoming you back soon,

All the best,
Alexandra W.

We stayed here before and found the same old issues. Reception is a zoo, a tiny area with people and cases arriving in all directions. The staff try and sort the chaos but the whole thing is a mess. Our room was not serviced until we arrived back at night and called down, there is no tea or coffee in the rooms. There is no lock on the bathroom door and it had a glass door, which was freaking me out. It's location is not great, a good old hike from the Bart station stuck behind the conference center. There are much better places to stay in downtown.

Hi,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us on your recent trip. I apologize for the confusion during your check-in. With the high volume of guests checking in, it can get a little chaotic. We recommend relaxing with some complimentary beverages while you wait. It is generally a very smooth process since our Talent is so knowledgeable.

If ever you should need anything in your room, our Whatever/Whenever service is always available to bring your anything you need. All you have to do is ask. We also offer the complimentary Acura service within a few miles of the hotel to help make your stay as easy as possible. I hope we will see you on your next visit.

All the best,
Alexandra Weiler - Manager

We stayed at the W San Francisco while celebrating our engagement weekend, which we mentioned to Eric at the front desk while checking in. He set us up with an upgraded room on a higher floor, arranged for us to get transportation around town through the Acura desk (a partnership between W and Acura that offers complimentary rides within a certain radius), and to top it off he sent us a bottle of champagne and chocolates to celebrate! This was all within the first 5 minutes. Needless to say the stay was very enjoyable: the hotel is conveniently located, the restaurant and bars are top notch, the rooms are comfortable and spacious, so on and so forth. Highly, highly recommend.

Green Features: If you're a Starwood member you get 500 points/night for forgoing towel service - not a bad deal!

Hi Dan,

Congratulations on your recent engagement! I am so glad we could celebrate it with you. The Acura service is amazing for getting around the city easily when you aren’t walking. We are located close to so many great restaurants and bars; sometimes it’s enjoyable to walk. It was our pleasure to send you a bottle of champagne and chocolate. Thank you for the compliments. I will be sure to share them Eric and the rest of the team here.

Best wishes,
Alexandra W.

My wife and I spent our anniversary at this property and the staff was amazing, they treated us so well and made our trip even more special than it already was! We contacted the staff prior to our visit and they were able to upgrade our room, offer early check-in, and even gave us a celebration bottle of champagne. The location is perfect, walking distance to market street, union square, and at&t park....we even made the walk all the way to the wharf since the weather was perfect. SF is one of our favorite cities and we will always stay at this property without a doubt.

Room Tip: Corner suites have alot of light and offer excellent views!
