We booked this room from a reccomendation from a friend that lives and is a tour guide in San Francisco. We loved this hotel! Since I travel for my job and stay in the major hotel chains (Hyatt, Westin, Hilton, etc.) The Triton was a breath of fresh air! In one word - Unique!

The Hotel is old but that's what gives it the charm. Our room was very small but the ambiance was incredible. Very clean! The decorating was WAY cool. FREE wireless internet worked perfect for us. The bed was so comfortable after a day and night on the town. Good sheets and a down comfortor. Bathroom was small but the shower excellent with soft towels! The room had a flat screen tv and also a radio that I could plug my iPod into. Refrigerator with mini bar.

The front desk staff was most helpful. Gave two wonderful suggestions for fantastic restaurants. Also printed maps for us. They serve wine every evening from 5-6 pm and coffee and tea every morning. Even the elevator is an experience! It is in an excellent location; right at the gates to China Town. Walking distance to Union Square, North Beach, and The Ferry Building. I will stay at The Triton when I return to San Francisco!

You can’t beat this location, right at the Chinatown gate on Grant Ave, five minute walk to Union Square, Market Street, cable car stop, and BART station. I took BART from the airport to Montgomery station and easily walked to the hotel. Even though I knew nothing about SF, I had no difficulty finding the hotel. SF’s mostly square-grid street layout makes it easy.

All of the staff were unfailingly polite, friendly, and enthusiastic. At check-in, I mentioned that this was my first visit to San Francisco, and the front desk clerk gave me a map brochure, oriented me with the area, and made suggestions for dining and sightseeing options based on my interests.

Music plays in the lobby, but it was inaudible in my 2 nd floor room. At the intersection outside my window, the crosswalk has a textured pavement, so there was a rough grinding noise every time a car went by, but the air conditioner on low speed provided enough white noise to mask the traffic noise. The weather was cool and did not require AC, so I ran it on fan-only, to circulate in some outside air.

The room was big enough to meet my needs, but it was small. If you require a large room this might not be the best place for you. Yes, the hotel is old (which explains why the rooms are small), but it has been thoroughly renovated and is very clean. My room was immaculately clean, and I am very picky about cleanliness. It has a fire alarm system and sprinklers. Seeing that sprinkler head in my room soothed some of my worries about staying in an old hotel. Wireless internet worked fine in my room. Shower was luxurious. If that was a low-flow showerhead, I would never believe it.

I enjoyed the hotel’s morning coffee, but if you don’t like their coffee walk to the Starbuck’s directly across the street. If you don’t like that Starbucks, walk 1 block to find the next one. SF seems to have a Starbuck’s on almost every corner.

I had a minor problem on the bill. I used a few items from the honor bar, and I filled out the tally sheet and turned it in to the front desk the night before I checked out. Unbeknownst to me, the maid had already charged for items used on prior days. This caused duplicate billing for some of the items. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk clerk, she cheerfully resolved the problem, crediting my account for the duplicate charges. She accepted my explanation without question, and showed no hesitancy or suspicion.

Overall, I had a very pleasant stay and will probably stay here again on my next visit to SF.

We liked it a lot. It was cozy and in a great location (across from the Chinatown gate). It was a bit expensive. ($200 after taxes). So I might try to find another hotel if I had more time to plan. (I booked about 6-8 weeks ahead). The music in the lobby is a bit annoying. But other than that it was nice. No pool or anything, but we don't care about those things. Only a few blocks from the BART.

I stayed at the Triton for a week and overall enjoyed the experience. On arrival we were given a double room rather than a twin but we were switched without any complications or trouble the next morning. The rooms are very small but are clean and quirky as with the hotel in general - Prince William speaks on the early call alarm!!

The staff was generally very helpful but there was one or two that are rude and totally unhelpful. The free internet access in the lobby is handy. The fortune teller each evening is a waste of money.

The location is very good, within minutes of Union Square (which is very quiet at night), the hotel is at the gate of Chinatown and unlike alot of hotels is not on a steep hill (a major bonus).

The restaurant was closed (for renovation I think) so I can't comment on it.

I would recommend the hotel as long as you don't have a lot of luggage.

Just returned from a two-night stay at the Triton, and I have to say my experience was in contrast to that of some of the other reviewers who felt there was a lack of restaurants in the neighborhood or that the staff wasn't helpful enough. We received excellent recommendations for dining in the neighborhood (Taylor St., Ryoko and Le Colonial) both nights of our stay from helpful concierge, Nick. Add to that a perfect location -- practically in Chinatown, right next to Union Square, and convenient to the waterfront--and a fun decor. It's true that some facilities could use better upkeep (e.g., plumbing), but for the price, I would go back to Triton again in a heartbeat.
