“Stay Like a Rock Star”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

I must confess my first experience with the Triton was many years ago, when working/traveling with a rock band. I loved it then, and my love affair hasn't ended. But Kimpton just makes sure this place keeps evolving and getting better.

This trip, San Fran was the last stop on a long road trip, and so it was also our first Kimpton Kids experience. We got delayed driving and weren't going to make it until very late (2-3 am). We called ahead and were assured by the friendly voice on the phone that our room would be waiting and we could collapse in comfort (and sleep in with a late checkout).

When we arrived, my sleepy daughter awoke to supreme rockstar treatment. We were whisked to our room quickly and efficiently where our treats were waiting for us. A Triton rubber duck, kids backpack and luggage tag, along with candies (thanks for the vegan chocolate for mom & dad) and an offer to deliver ice cream. She immediately called down and asked if she could have her ice cream after breakfast because mom said it was too late, and was promised it would be fine.

She got her wish the next morning a couple hours after exploring for breakfast- all propped up on her big bed, watching cartoons and eating half a pint(!) of mint chocolate chip. Living the life!

We explored Chinatown for lunch and then headed to Ocean beach to fly our kite (awesome). But she left the Triton with a couple more rubber ducks and treats, thanks to a staff which all kept going out of their way for her. She was so grateful and in awe!

Kimpton Kids raises the bar WAY high. But it was fun to have her treated like the rockstar she is!

Our room wasn't big but perfectly appointed and comfortable. Daughter pronounced her bed :the comfiest ever" and said it made up for so much drive time. The cool colors and vibe impressed and delighted.

I know I'll be back for work, and we've had a few couples Kimpton escapes, but now we know that Kimpton is a great family place too.

What took us so long?

Green Features: Kimpton is a very environmentally friendly company and uses a number of GreenLeaders best practices.

You can't ask for a better location in SF. And even better- the staff! They are lively & helpful, making you feel very welcomed. There is even a complimentary wine hour each night where you can relax next to the fireplace. Will definitely return when we are in the area!!

The Triton is just across the road from Chinatown, a 5 minute walk to Union Square and 45 minutes to Fishermans Wharf (or a $10 cab ride).
You will receive a warm welcome the moment you step in the door to this hotel a theme which continues throughout your stay.
The rooms are basic but comfortable, there is a complimentary wine hour and cookie stand and the staff are always very happy to help.
It is an indeal hotel to base yourself in as you explore the hotel, as it is set amongst the local bars and restuarants , close to the shops and located close to all the public transport.
We paid around £80 a night for this hotel and found it great value for money

The environment is awesome. It is located right next to Chinatown and close to many other attractions near by. The decor inside the hotel is beautiful. There are bright colors everywhere. It was such an artistic hotel. The rooms are so interesting. It really was romantic and relaxing. They also have two bicycles you can take out for the day. You could ride them to the pier too!!!

Room Tip: Get to the bikes in the morning or someone else will get them!!! Don't forget a map at the front...

I booked two rooms at Hotel Triton for the July 4th Holiday weekend to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday. The website sold me on Triton's fun, funky, quirky, colorful design. But I was absolutely blown away by how welcoming, fun and truly exceptional the staff was during our visit.

On the first night, my mother made a casual joke after seeing a bottle of champagne chilling in the hotel lobby, "Hey, where's mine!?" and Marcus, at the front desk quickly and charmingly replied, "What room are you in?" Sure enough, later that night... we received a complimentary bottle of wine, snacks, and Hotel Triton Rubber Ducky in a concierge suit. It was charming and hysterical.

The next night, the night before her sixtieth birthday, she received a bottle of champagne, and the day of her birthday she received an incredibly creative and cute picture of our three friends at the front desk - Marcus, Sam, and Joe - wearing fun masks and wishing her happy birthday... along with party masks for her and her boyfriend to wear too.

And in addition to that, everyone was extremely helpful and informative about travel and tourist destinations around the area. The hotel itself is on the immediate southern corner of Chinatown and an easy walk to some of the sites to the North such as the Ferry Building, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, and Fisherman's Warf. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the hotel was never even close to being too packed, which is especially good to note since it was the super busy July 4th weekend. It was also delightful to see a random pet or two on vacation with their owner as well, since Triton is pet friendly.

Hotel Triton had a fun, funky, trendy atmosphere and amazing personal touch that made this trip an all around fantastic experience.

Located literally at the gates of Chinatown and a short walk to Union Square, the Ferry Building, Coit Tower, and the Mosconi Center, one could not ask for a property to be better situated. As many of my fellow reviewers have noted, the employees provided solid service and quickly met requests.

My only concern was that unlike other Kimpton properties, this boutique hotel felt like a boutique hotel, just not much like a Kimpton. That is not to say that it wasn't quirky (it was) or that they didn't have the customary wine hour (they did). They also provided a welcome amenity (am an inner circle member).

However, it felt like it was trying hard to be a Kimpton and just did not quite succeed. To its credit, as the Triton focused on artists, paintings from a local painter hung on the mezzanine level and the staff wore pins that listed their favorite artists.

But it appeared that for every positive check there was a counter stroke. For example, on the second floor just above the Mezzanine artists' walk, hallway signs proclaimed a "creative zone" that was nothing more than an unused messy and boring conference room where I doubt very little creativity could occur. Even the amenity (as generous and welcome as it was) felt thrown together and not personalized (typically, a very nice Kimpton Tradition). There was no turndown service (something a Kimpton does well by making notes or dropping mini amenities on pillows), the rooms though reasonably clean could have used some attention (there was a cockroach in the bathroom and one trash bin was not emptied), and the lobby area felt forced with little space between the entrance, the reception, and the sitting area.

It is hard as the Kimpton sets a fairly high bar and not every property has the layout or the ability to be a Monaco or Palomar. Having stayed in fifteen different Kimpton properties already this year, I left feeling both disappointed that did not have a consistent Kimpton experience and guilty for feeling the need to share this.

Will still stay in (many) more Kimpton properties this year so this will not impact my loyalty or patronage. Perhaps I am silly to have held such expectations when not all variables are the same. The staff as noted above with whom I interacted gamely tried to please customers. Maybe the deck was stacked against them a little this time.

Room Tip: Given the proximity to the street and Chinatown, a higher room will help filter noise as would an in...

Green Features: Hard to comment as loved the Keurig Coffeemakers in the room, but not necessarily environmentally friendly. Also, disposable toiletries rather than larger dispensers may be less friendly though more convenient for travelers.

The hotel is located in such a manner that you can by foot reach all of San Francisco's tourist places. It's close to all the best shopping and dining and has a great atmosphere. also it's a plus that they serve free chocolate chip cookies and wine/drinks every day!
