“Beautiful apartment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

I stayed at the Steinhart for a week in November this year, and the staff were very friendly. I booked the deluxe studio which was very spacious and felt like home. The only downside was that my apartment was on the ground floor facing the onto Sutter Street. At night it was very loud from people walking by and cars beeping. Ideally, I would try and get a room upstairs/at the back. The apartments are a quick 20 minute walk from the Moscone Centre and 10 minutes from Union Square. I had no problems with homeless people, and I was staying here on my own for business, I felt very safe.

This is not a full service hotel, by any stretch. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in a large apartment sized suite, with full kitchen facilities, walk in closet and large living room space with the use of a Murphy bed if needed. The Steinhart is perfectly situated to walk to just about anywhere, access the trolley, or shop. There was a post much earlier that had warned of some homeless people outside the front door making them feel unsafe... I can assure you as a lone female, who stayed at the Steinhart, always walking, and frequently coming back after 11 pm... I felt completely safe, and never had a moments concern for my safety in this location. The room was quiet, and well appointed.

Stayed at the Steinhart for the second time early in October. It was just as lovely as the first time (last October). The staff was kind, friendly, and helpful. Our room was almost as nice as the room we had last year—just needed a bit of art on the walls. This hotel is beautiful. I’m sure it has the coolest elevator in town. It’s very quiet between suites. There are windows on at least two sides of the suites we’ve stayed in so there’s always a cross-breeze. It’s in downtown San Francisco, lower Nob Hill, so there is noise at night but not nearly as much as you find closer to Union Square (which is a ten-minute walk away). There are buses that will take you south (2 blocks away), north (1 or 3 blocks away), east (half a block away) and west (a block away), the California Street cable car is 3 block away, there are lots of good restaurants within walking distance, there’s a great sandwich shop on the same block, next door to an excellent gelato place. It’s so nice to come home at the end of a day of festival-going, wine tasting, or sight-seeing and relax and rehash around the dining room table. The free wireless Internet is pretty good. If it's not, tell the staff and they'll deal with it. Housekeeping is once a week, so it’s up to you to keep your place tidy. The room rates rose a bit from last year (and the frequency of housekeeping didn’t) but I’d still stay here rather than a hotel room any day—it’s like having a temporary home in this beautiful city. I love this place.

Together with my husband,we have just completed a 5nights stay in the hotel. We had a one bedroom apartment - the rooms were very big, very nice decorated, the bed was super comfortable.as the room was located on the back of the hotel, there was no traffic noise.however,it was just next to the elevator,so there was some noise from its usage, but no noise was getting to the bedroom.the room was clean, but indeed there is a once-per-week cleaning service (every monday) so for the rest you'd have to take care the apartment on your own.still,we found the extra privacy welcomed.there was a strange smell in the kitchen, probably from the old furniture,so we'd open the window from time to time to let the smell out.the bathroom was big.several clean bath towels were at ur disposal in one of the cupboards,to compensate for the rare room cleaning service.I personally didn't like the shower head - it was fixed on the wall, and it was randomly splashing water,so keeping the hair dry was challenging without the shower cap.the location of the hotel is very good - 10min away from union square.plenty of shops around - ladies, look for a shoes shop on powell before reaching union square - great designers shoes at discounted prices :) there were also plenty of small grocery stores, open 24h,so you won't get to miss anything.one of the cable car lines which goes all the way to ghirardelli square also passes on powell,so that's a easy way to get back to the hotel after strolling on the shore line.one last thing which I didn't like was the fact that there was no computer in the reception for guests.so we had to ask the receptionist for a favor,so that we could check-in for our flight..for the price of the rooms in this hotel,I thin they could spare a computer in the hallway...not last, please note that there is nobody in the reception from 10pm to 9am,so if you need any travel arrangements/guidance,make sure you ask all questions within these hours.
Overall,a very nice stay in this hotel

Our first impression was of stained carpets and an unpleasant smell. Our room was quite a good size but only because the bed was a fold away one! The bed was small, rickety, had one sheet and one thin blanket only. There was a second thin blanket in the wardrobe. All the furniture was mis-matched, old and the cheapest possible. The only saving grace was that the place was clean. We tried to move rooms but the hotel was fully booked. After one night we moved to a sister hotel the Diva which was clean, modern and excellent. Try the Diva first as it was only about £6 more per night than the Steinhart. No competition!

Dear HazelC5,

Thank you for sharing your experience on Trip Advisor. I am so sorry to hear that your stay with us was not as pleasant as you expected. Please accept my deepest apology for the inconvenience.

Steinhart hotel is a residential hotel with limited services and therefore unable to compete with tourist hotels such as Hotel DIVA. All apartments at the Steinhart are spacious and equipped with kitchens and kitchenettes. The studio apartments have Murphy beds with a full size mattress. In addition to the blankets the unit has an electric heater. I am so sorry we were unable to offer you to move to another apartment and you had to move to our sister property.

I hope you will give The Steinhart another chance and give us the opportunity to change your impression on us. Please feel free to contact me directly and I will be delighted to assist you with your reservation.

Best Regards,

Dimitar Stanev

This is a beautiful, classic hundred-year-old hotel - the apartments (we had two) are spacious, clean and elegant. Don't expect a usual hotel experience as this is self-catering and the rooms are only serviced weekly - this was exactly as we wanted! We did not have a car so cannot comment on parking. The wifi is excellent, no complaints at all! Hotel staff helpful and friendly. Our apartment faced Sutter Street and there was a lot of traffic noise. Easy walk to the shopping centre and the cable car. Highly recommend the Steinhart for a unique experience!
