“Exquisite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

My husband and I spent a night in San Francisco on our way up to Napa for our niece's wedding and were fortunate enough to spend the night at the Ritz, situated on the lovely Nobb Hill. We had a gorgeous suite which was part of a package which included parking ($75) ad a $60 breakfast credit.
Our room was beautiful, a king bed with luxurious bedding and linens. The bathroom was fabulous with a large soaking tub and a separate shower. Like all Ritz properties, the service was five star, the amenities were top notch, and each employee made you feel as it you were the only guest at the hotel.

We stayed at the Ritz on a corporate rate, so it was obviously a great value. If we were paying the full rate, I might have a few hesitations. First, the pros: it is a stunning building. The staff is excellent - everything you would expect from a Ritz. From the doormen, to the front desk to the concierge, the service was friendly and helpful. My kids loved the fortune cookies in the lobby and the toys the housekeeper brought them at our first turndown. Bottled water and chocolate every night. Fantastic beds - I slept soundly every night. Spacious and beautiful bathrooms with every amenity needed. The gym is very large and well equipped. The location is, generally speaking, quite convenient. It is three blocks from Union Square, and the California cable car line stops at the corner (the Powell/Mason and Powell/Hyde lines stop one block away). Many restaurants are located within a few blocks' walk. Chinatown is a block away. Our room bordered Pine Street, which did not appear to be a major thoroughfare, and the residential nature of the immediate neighborhood meant that the hotel was very quiet for a large city.

The cons: The location can also be considered a negative. It is located on a steep hill, so keep that in mind if you plan on walking. It wasn't a problem for us, but it would be if mobility were an issue. If you are hoping to be surrounded by shops and restaurants, I would opt for the Westin St. Francis or one of the hotels located directly in Union Square. A few nitpicks: I echo the comment below about the lack of electrical outlets. I had to charge one device on the bathroom counter and one on the floor next to the bed. There was an outlet in the desk, but it didn't appear to work. I also echo the comment about the late turndown service. Our housekeeper was extremely friendly, but we were on East coast time and were generally in our pajamas by the time she stopped by. There was coffee in the lobby in the morning, but it was gone every day by 7:00.

Overall, a beautiful hotel with excellent service.

Talk about seamless.....streamlined....all that was here. From the moment you pull up to the moment you check out, the Ritz brand is in full regalia. Greeters at the door would say "Welcome Back!" after our morning walks. First greeting was warm, and I happened to mention "wow! you should be holding a tray of White wine!", only joking because it seemed like we were walking into an elegant party. To my surprise, sure enough a server presented us with two flutes of champagne at the check-in desk!
And after I had a short bout of "not feeling so good" in the lobby one night, they sent up Ginger Ale and crackers for me...how nice was THAT!
Loved the location: walk to Union Square and absolutely ALL the cool stuff in the city. It was all so nice.

Stunning hotel and service! Great location on Nob Hill convenient to everything San Fran has to offer! Once again great service from all! I would recommend the club level as the service was outstanding.

The grounds were beautiful. Everything you'd expect of a Ritz Carlton. The entrance is impressive and the staff is always friendly and ready to greet you when you arrive. In the mornings, they have water and towels for the runners. In the afternoons, they have fruit-infused water and fortune cookies to refresh you from your day out on the town. The location is okay. It's at the top of a hill with a ridiculous incline. It's kind of inconvenient if you plan on exploring by foot.

Check-in was a breeze. Our room was ready and the front desk agent seemed genuinely happy to see us. We never had to wait more than 2 minutes for an elevator. We breezed right into our room after 12 hours traveling.

The room was great. There were two padded side chairs with a foot stool and a comfortable desk chair with a desk. We had a king-sized bed. It was comfortable. The only complaint was that the pillows were made of feathers and were too soft for me. There is a flat-screen TV and tons of storage space (drawers, closet space) and a nice armoire that hides the mini bar. The hotel also furnishes each room with free water each day, which we really appreciated when we were out and about all day.

The bathroom was typical - carrera marble floors, walls. Beautiful and exactly what you'd expect. The toilet was separate with a door for added privacy. The hotel provided shampoo, lotion, mouthwash, a comb, a shoe horn...but we had to pay $2 for a tiny tube of toothpaste at the front desk as we'd forgotten our own.

The windows in the room open, which was nice since we had really great weather and wanted to get some fresh air while we were in the room.

The only complaint besides the soft pillows are the lack and location of the electric plugs. There was one in a corner on the floor by a lamp, two on the desk and another near the foot-end of the bed with no nearby table. It was really inconvenient for charging our cell phone and Ipad. There is no mirror with chair for the ladies to blow-dry or curl their hair while getting ready. Another negative.

Speaking of iPad...besides the toothpaste, we also forgot our iPad charger. We asked our lovely housekeeper if they had any in lost and found. After checking and finding none, she alerted the front desk who called and told us we were welcome to use the charger, but we had to charge it downstairs. This was pretty late at night and we had just flown in fromthe east coast. Thanks, but no thanks. This was a little off-putting, especially since this is not a $200/night hotel and they could have asked for a drivers license or something else as collateral.

We never were able to enjoy turn-down service because the housekeeper never came until after 8:30 and we were already in for the night. Turn down service should be at 5 or 6...or they should ask what time you'd want the service so everyone could get that benefit. The location is great, but there isn't much other than Chinatown to do by foot late at night and we never got used to West Coast time, so, unfortunately, we were tuckered out "early" every night.

The hotel gym is state of the art. They have everything to make you feel comfortable...everything! Warm shave gels, mouthwash, snuggly towels, beautiful, private showers, lots of equipment, fruit-infused water...everything!

Overall, we had a great stay. This hotel is beautiful and we enjoyed our vacation in San Francisco and we felt comfortable and welcome at the Ritz.

Good, but perhaps trading on its name.
Pros: Great decor, well located, good food (both bar and restaurant). Polite staff

Cons: Slow service in the bar. It didnt encourage a five star experience as one would expect from a hotel of this calibre. We have stayed in similar hotels at similar price/star rating which have been much better than this.

My husband and I recently spent our anniversary at the Ritz in San Francisco. The entire staff, valet, desk and bell staff were all very friendly and welcoming.
They gave us a corner room with terrific views. The bed was comfortable and inviting.
Here are my criticisms. There was only one bathrobe in the room and their should have been two. The towels, wow, they need to be retired. I felt like they were the towels from the Marriott Courtyard. They had the Ritz logo on them, but they were thin and just tired. If you are paying that much for a room, it is the small details that matter.
One more small item, I think it is time to replace the hallway carpets. They have seen better days.
