TThis is a small boutique hotel in the thick of Union Square that is run by a small, but up and coming management company. Each guest is invited to enjoy a delicious, free breakfast and an evening happy hour for networking and social connections that are crtiical for the solo or novice traveler. The rooms are mre like suites and the spacial placement of bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, etc, conveys even more of a spacious feeling.

This hotel was a truly fun place to stay for my week in San Francisco. The hotel has a quirky charm that grows on you throughout your stay there. The check in was very smooth and the front desk attendant could not have been more pleasant. My suite was very clean, but missing a few things. The bathroom was clean, but in need of some renovation (water handles in the shower were falling off and it was very worn). The rooms had very nice robes and excellent Aveda bath products. However, the some of the towels were a bit worn out and had some frayed edges (not quite up to par), compared to everything else. The living room area desparately needed a coffee table to set things down on, so you don't have to use the desk chair. The good part of the rooms is that they are very quiet (a rare find in a downtown location), however the reason that they are so quiet is that the windows have a view of the brick wall of the building next door. It was nice to be able to open the window though, as there were no a/c controls or vents in my room and it was a bit hot during the day. It was still hot out, but cooled off enough at night to sleep with the ceiling fan on high and the windows opened. The high speed internet was nice and fairly fast. On the plus side again, are the sitting areas on each floor. It was nice to be able to get up and have coffee each morning and work on my laptop in the common area (which has a window and view out to Union Square. The hotel has an arrangement with a very nice local health club (just around the corner) to work out, but the cost is $15 per day (a bit much, as most higher end hotels offer a fitness center or free workout passes). The daily continental breakfast was fine and the afternoon wine and cheese reception was nice (the wine was actually enjoyable and the cheese selection was interesting and pleasurable, unlike most other hotel receptions with unpalatable wine and cubed swiss, cheddar and pepper jack). All in all, I enjoyed my stay and will stay here again on my next visit to San Francisco, whether for work or pleasure. The location can't be beat and the service was great! I would have to rate it as a 4 star experience and with just a little bit of work it could be truly 5 star.

I normally stay at established brand name hotels in city centres, if only because we get really fantastic corporate rates. Booked here for a low rate to make a change and was very happy. By Union Square, free internet and breakfast served at end of the corridor in an alcove on each floor. A range of people staying and more conversation than staying for a week at a big hotel. Try It !

Best parts: free wine, cheese and hors d'oeuvres from 5:30-7 in the evening, free breakfast, free internet, right at Union Square. The room was cozy, clean, nicely decorated, and quiet. Nice queen size bed (we got the least expensive room). Front desk staff very helpful. The parking garage for the hotel is on Mason, less than a block away.

Myself and hubby sttayed here for 8 nights in Sept 09. The hotel is a charming old worldly place that is perfectly located with all forms of transport on your door step. We stayed in an executive room which was lovely but a but noisey. We found every one of the staff to be so friendly and most helpful. They were great at suggesting places to eat and drink and places to visit and were only too willing to check out places for us on the internet. We loved the wine tasting that was held early evening. It was a great way to meet up with the other guests. If you a looking for a hotel that is good value and a little bit different with a very personal service this is the place to stay. We would definately stay here again.

Newly weds

Have stayed in many hotels around the world and this little gem is up with the best of them. We like smaller hotels with character. Location, amenities, wine & cheese, breakfast, simple but terrific rooms....we have found our SF hide away!

After planning a trip to San Franciso for a couple of years the trip finally came to fruition. During the planning we had looked at many different hotels, large, small, on the warf, on the square etc. We finally opted for the Inn at Union Square and were all absolutely delighted. We were travelling with friends and had 2 rooms on the second floor. Our room was a one bedroomed suite at the front of the hotel and our friends had a large room with separate sitting area just down the corridor.
The rooms were clean and well appointed. The bed was comfortable and we loved the down pillows! However, most of the rooms (not the ones at the front) look out onto the brick wall of the adjacent building - so don't expect a view. The staff were a pleasure. Ken on reception was both helpful and willing to pass the time of day with you. It was clear that he took pride in helping guest like us from out of the country. This was also true of his colleagues who also manned the reseption when Ken was not around.
The continental breakfast had a good variety, including fresh fruit cereals etc and you had the choice of eating it in your room or in the communal areas on each floor.
The evening wine & snacks in the late afternoon, however, was the icing on the cake. 3 varieties of cheese with buscuits, a selection of dried fruits and nuts was quite a spread. It was lovely to sample the wine & nibbles whilst chatting with the other guests.
