Great hotel in awesome location. Rooms and bathroom are big (stayed in a king bed only room), Beware of bad reviews. Since this is a nice, nostalgic hotel, lots of snooty people stay here (I got a good deal while traveling on business). Don't listen to them, this hotel is amazing and I stay at a lot of hotels through out the year! Very elegant.

Beautiful Hotel and lobby - xmas festivity just fabulous. Staff ( with one exception) were arrogant and appered to be going out of their way to serve - they were snooty and i can't see the reason why

the restaurant area was just gorgoeus however the lax service and attitude of the staff in there spoilt the experience.

The rooms in the Tower area are a little small for 3 people. No one offered to take our bags etc.. when we left and wanted to charge us for a foldaway knowing that we booked for 3 people all along

The hotel is reasonably conveneintly located - with the cable cars being just a minute walk away. The area is very nice however as expected the hills are challenging .

Lovely breakfasts and cocktails

We stayed at this property for two nights in November - a girls trip and first time visitors to San Francisco. This property was everything we could have asked for and more. Check in was quick, staff were incredibly helpful and polite AND they were kind enough to provide us with a complimentary upgrade to a bayview room which made our visit to this city much more special. The view out the window was spectacular! The room was beautifully decorated, bed linens were to die for and a bathroom that was made for royality. This property is rich in history and the architecture is breathtaking.

The only complaint (and it isnt the hotel's fault) is the steep hill it sits on - made getting to and from the hotel a bit inconvenient as we had to either take a cab or the cable car - we walked it once and it was WAY too much. We also didnt try the restaurant as it was pricey but the coffee shop on the lower level was reasonable - the coffee and pastries were delicious. The concierge recommended a nice little restaurant called the Nob Hill Cafe two blocks away - great Italian food and very reasonable.

I highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is so luxurious and relaxing. I absolutely loved my stay there. They made sure we had everything we needed. And, it was so decked out for the holidays - it was lovely. If you do stay in the Tower (recommended), there is a lot of walking you have to do to get from those elevators to the main front entrance. But, we were staying there during a rainstorm so the hotel was like our own city. It's huge. The beds were great, the bathrooms were fabulous, the shower was great, the view was tremendous!

My only complaint would be the staff at the Tonga Room/Hurricane Bar, notably, the Host there (Paul or John - something like that; he was a middle-aged Asian man). We wanted to have an early cocktail at the Tonga Room / Hurricane Bar and he (the host) was very rude to us. We got there a tad b/f it opened and were ignored for about 10 mins until we tried to walk in. Then, he yelled at us saying "we don't open until 5" and turned his back on us. Then, we came back about 6:30 and wanted to still check out the bar so we returned. Note: We are Fairmont Presidents' Club Members - who had a separate line to stand in - and they made us stand in the public line waiting for over 45 minutes just to sit down a get a cocktail. We left after waiting in line (with non-hotel stayers) for over 45 minutes. Here's the dinger: they had 1/2 of the restaurant blocked off that they weren't even using?!!! But, they made us wait! It was ridiculous! Oh well - they didn't get our business and definitely won't in the future because of their rude behavior.
My only other complaint would be that the hotel didn't offer free internet in the business center - like other hotels in its class.
Other than those two, it was fabulous. The spa was AMAZING - best massage I've ever had - EVER!

We stayed at the Fairmont San Francisco for two nights at the end of our honeymoon (we spent the first part of the honeymoon at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa). A few things keep this hotel from being as good as its sister property to the north in Sonoma. For example, there was only one bathrobe in our room, yet the property knew (and confirmed on check-in) that we were there for our honeymoon. There was no way to make coffee in our room (the Fairmont in Sonoma had a French press in our room). The iron was broken and my husband had to put it back together; just little things that you don't expect of the Fairmont. Finally, the large picture windows in the room offered us a fantastic view from the Golden Gate Bridge all the way around to the TransAmerica building - but the windows were filthy on the outside. I know it's possible to have clean windows on tall buildings - and when what you're paying for is partly the view, it would have been nice to enjoy it a little more.

The pros: the lobby and common spaces of the property are absolutely gorgeous. We were there when it was decorated for Christmas, and it was just beautiful. Also, the staff, especially the doormen and bellmen, were very friendly and helpful. And when we got stranded after a performance at the Opera House with no cab in sight, the concierge was able to send a car to pick us up. The staff makes up for what the rooms seem to lack.
