“The Donatello provides luxury and a perfect location for a pittance.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2009

My wife and I visit San Francisco frequently, usually twice a year, and the Donatello is the best value we have ever found. The service from check-in through check-out was warm, friendly, and efficient. Our large corner room was full of light and large, basically a suite. It contained all the amenities we could ask for: tv, internet, refrigerator, microwave, dishes, wine glasses, coffee maker (with good coffee), phone, radio, CD player, and so on. The linens and towels were luxurious, what one expects from a hotel charging two or three times what we paid. The Donatello has a restaurant and a small piano bar. We used the latter and enjoyed that, too. Our Tanqueray martinis were about $10 each, significantly less that we are accustomed to in our home town (Miami Beach) or bars we typically visit in NYC or SF. And of course the hotel is about a block from Union Square and a short walk to the Powell St BART stop. What a wonderful establishment.

Only a block from Union Sqare, the perfect place to stay for great shopping. The decor was very nice and up to date. My room was large, very comfortable, and well laid out. I look froward to going back to San Francisco and stay at the Donatello

Just spent 2 nights here to enjoy some city culture and shopping. Great location for both!
The staff is very friendly and attentive and the head concierge knows about all the restaurants nearby.
Nice fitness center with sauna and co-ed jacuzzi too.
Had a very good dinner at the hotel restuarant. the creamy polenta appetizer was divine and big enough for an entree serving.
The only negative, the continental breakfast for $10pp was less than impressive. Many good cafes and restuarants within a block.

Our presence at the wine and cheese tasting that night dropped the average age of the room by half.... and we're in our 40's!! Place was nice enough, nothing noteworthy except for most of the guests being in their 80's.

First thing you'll see when you enter the room is a hidious bed spread on the bed. Didn't want to even sit on it thinking how old and dirty it could be. Thankfully, later that evening, hotel staff folds it away and stashes it in the closet. Actually, made the room suprisingly nicer once it was gone.

Nothing to complain about, but nothing to brag about either.

The Donatello, which seems to be part time-share and part hotel, is a comfortable and attractive property in an ideal San Francisco location just a block from Union Square. The hotel has its own small restaurant and a lively cocktail lounge, and the hotel staff are helpful, friendly, and attentive to special needs. Rooms are ample in size and comfortable, with some of the usual extras found in time-shares (dishes, small appliances, etc.). The whole hotel is very clean and well maintained, and if you have a problem, someone is there right away to take care of it. There are several excellent restaurants within a few blocks, and the theater playhouses are just around the block.

I arranged a conference based on at the Donatello and stayed with clients for a week. The hotel is elegant and very well kept. Rooms are big and comfy with nice amenities, like a kitchenette with fridge, sink, microwave and coffemaker. Big tv, dvd player and sofa group. The location one block from union square is excellent. Right in the middle of the shopping and entertainment district yet quiet. The hotel has a great roof terrace and a comfortable common room on the top floor next to their fitness center. The level of service we received both before we arrived and during our stay from all employees was excellent. No question to small, no challenge to big. I will definitely use this hotel the next time I'm in San Francisco wheter I go for business or vacation with my family. I have never received this level of service and such high standard rooms and amenities for such a low price in the US. The only complaint is that the free wifi was a bit slow, especially in the meeting room when 14 of us were online at the same time. This however does not stop me from recommending this hotel warmly to everyone!

We stay regularly at the Donatello during the year. On Nov. 30th we were returning from a two week trip and had our 8 month old grandson with us. After a long day of travel we choose to stay the night at the Donatello rather than drive the 5 hours home.

Upon arriving our grandson need to be tended to and the bell staff and front desk took charge and took my wife and grandson to the room while I completed check-in. The staff made sure our every need was taken care of.

We have always had this great level of service from the staff. We stay in other lodging in SF also, however, we never get the service that the staff at the Donatello provides.
