Was the mantra of the staff. When I asked for a nice room, the front desk clerk told us, "I value my integrity, so I must tell you, this hotel is very old. I will do my best."
We arrive in our room to find that it is a 9'x21' Box. The window was partially blocked by the window air conditioner, which was okay cause the window was SOOOO filthy that you couldn't really see outside.
Fortunately, we brought our personal DVD player (the television selection was horrible. The TV was old with a bad picture. I plugged the DVD player into the tv's rca jacks, but the tv wouldn't accept the signal. When I called guest services the clerk told me, "I value my integrity. Our televisions are very old. I don't think they accept a signal from a DVD player." Hmm, I am beggining to smell a theme. If a guest asks a question about the hotel, Just tell them that you value your integrity, but the hotel hasn't been renovated in 78 years. They will understand. If the guest doesn't seem appeased by your honesty, offer them an upgrade, for an additional fee. If you REALLY value your integrity, find another job. I am not taking potshots at the employees, but come on, you don't have to use a gun to steal from people..
This hotel is a great example of owner milking the name of a (formerly) grand property for all it is worth. They charge a premium, and deliver NOTHING. Not a cup of coffee, not a newspaper, nothing, nada....squat.
This is the second Kimpton property that we have stayed at that did not meet our expectations, the first was the Villa Florence. Same story, smaller scale. At least the Villa Florence had an afternoon wine reception so that you could get good and drunk and forget about how you were ripped off.
IF YOU ARE LARGE (in the caboose) do not under any circumstances check into the hotel. The space between the sink and the bathroom wall in the toilet area is VERY tight. We are not overweight (by today's standards) and I knew that another 50 lbs. and I would have a problem. How embarassing would that phone call be when you can not get off the pot.
If you are unfortunate enough to be reading this from the Sir Francis Drake (SFD), don't waste your money in their restaurants, go across the street and eat at Sears Fine Foods. This place is legendary, for a good reason. They have the best breakfasts I have eaten in my life. The corned beef hash is to die for. And the little swedish pancakes are irresistible.
Since I am on the subject of food, check out Anjou, 44 Campton Place, just 1 1/2 block from the SFD. This little French restaurant is amazing. A real gem. My wife and I have eaten there several times and have never been disappointed. We have spent considerable time in Paris and this food rivals, if not exceeds what we found in France. Last night we had 2 large appetizers (the toasted brioche of duck foie gras, imported from France with heart leek salad and sauteed apples) and one "special" entree which is usually the wild salmon with mushroom and something mousse in a puff pastry. It was all absolutely fabulous and with a bottle of napa merlot, the bill came to $105.00!
