“Pool closed. Average service at best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2011

Good location if you want to be away from downtown, and older more interesting parts of San Francisco but close to Golden Gate Park. Reservation and check-in in is brusque. Web site advertises the pool which is closed until further notice. Reservations can only be made by phone. 1 night deposit required. Cancellation before 72 hours has 5% fee. Restaurant not open for dinner and has an average and high priced menu. Seems to be trading on its past without maintaining past standards. If you prefer to be near the ocean the Ocean Park motel is a better choice and it is near the zoo.

We chose the Seal Rock Inn for its proximity to the Cliff House where we were attending a wedding. The front desk folks are not particularly friendly, but did allow us to check in an hour early.

Our room was huge which was great after being in a tiny room in the heart of the city with our toddler. He was thrilled to run in circles around the room. The rooms are definitely outdated but clean and well-maintained. The bathroom appeared to be updated and was very nice, though a tub would have been nice.

There is a courtyard and a pool which were a good place to run around. It's hard to imagine the pool gets much use, though!

It is definitely helpful to have a car if staying at the Seal Rock Inn, but it's nice to be in the city but feel like we're in nature!

We stayed at the Seal Rock Inn for 4 nights. We choose a corner room with a queen bed and two twin size beds. It had a sink and coffee pot. The room was large and the bathroom looked newly remodeled. It had a nice shower. Also, we had breakfast in the restaurant. It was excellent. It's near the ocean, but the car ride to mid-city did not take very long! Buses take a lot longer!

It's an old inn, but nicely maintained. It was clean!!!

Room Tip: Corner room!!!

My family stayed here for one night so we didn't need anything fancy, but still. We booked one of the "basic rooms", #102. It was spacious with a queen bed and 2 twins, but there was weirdness. First of all, the twin beds were throwbacks to the 70's. They doubled as the sofa and chairs. We had to pull them out and remove the covers to use them as beds.

Second, there was an accordian room divider that separated the bedroom from the living room where the twin beds were.

Third, the bathroom looked like it was the beginning of a remodel - the shower was really nice with 12"x12" tile and a modern shower head, but the rest of the bathroom was outdated and the closet had no door.

Other oddities - we spent a chilly evening because we couldn't find the heater - it was behind the huge TV armoire, as was the thermostat. There was no clock or phone. The room had a small refrigerator, coffee maker and stove top but no cups, mugs, cooking utensils or pots/pans. Also no microwave. And I had to pay $4 for a pack-n-play crib, what's up with that??

There were some good things - spacious room, nice shower, decent restaurant, great location. If we had booked one of the remodeled rooms, I might've liked it a lot more.

Seal Rock Inn has a 2-night minimum stay but if you call on the day of, they can book you for that night except for the rooms with kitchenettes.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2011

I have been here many times, mostly on the third floor with the fireplace. Once I got one with a kitchenette. In January my husband had to have open heart surgery and we now live in Sonoma County although my brother still has the family home in the sunset district. But, my step-daughter was coming and I thought I should get a room here, which was only 8 blocks from the VA hospital. I got room 204 on the second floor. It was very clean, had a great view, and had a queen bed and two twin beds. It also had a table and chairs plus a refridgerator, and coffee maker, iron, and hair dryer. The bathroom had been remodeled and had a very large, beautiful shower with a built in bench inside to sit. It was made to look like marble, and really very nice. You could heat the bathroom separately from a switch you turned on. We were very comfortable and it had a nice homey feeling. This is not a fancy hotel, which I have been in many times like the Westin on Union Square. But, this is a wonderful place to relax, with great views of the ocean and close to the beach, and many nice places like the Golden Gate Park. It's even close to Sausalito as we drove there one day for shopping and lunch. Many restaurants near by on Geary, and Clement street Or in the Sunset District on Noriega, Irving, or Taravel also has many places to eat. Mels old fashoined restaurant is on Geary. They have the Cliff house down the street, and Park Place across from ocean Beach with great views also. They also have a delightful restaurant downstairs in this hotel for breakfast oer lunch. We had many brekfast's there and it was great. Especially the omelet's, and the salsa I asked for (on the side) was really good. Fresh squeezed OJ, great coffee, pancakes, waffles, or bacon & eggs, are all great. I didn't try the lunch menu, but it looked good too. It was great to be able to have breakfast there, and then have such a short drive to the hospital. Over the years I have stayed there with my husband many times, and never was a room dirty nor did I have any problems. We love this place and i can drive to fisherman's wharf or anywhere in the city from here. But, i grew up there, so I do know my way around. If you want comfort, and a nice view, with a nice restaurant downstairs, this is the place. Only the third floor has fireplaces and kitchenettes I believe. Tell them what you want ,and you won't be disappointed. And yes, the elevator is old, and from another time. But, we enjoyed it. And by the way , in the summer they have a nice enclosed court yard with a swimming pool.

This isn't the type of hotel/motel you go to if your on a bussiness trip its better suited to families or couples that what a comfortable, clean, cute, and safe place to spend some time. It is a nice place to return to when you cannot go back home after a long day. I love the enclosed patio area it is wonderful and nice to sit outside at night.

Beware: The SF MUNI buses turn around here and keep their motors running until the next route -- seemed constant!
The rooms' entry floor was filthy, the baseboards thick with dust and dirt, the bathroom shower curtain had a moldy smell, the walls near waste bin had residue from others' trash that missed.
So, we called to have our room changed --- told no other room available ---- manager arrived - we pointed out the dirty areas immediately inside the door --- houskeeping came while we were out and cleaned only the exact spots we pointed out and not the rest of the baseboards all around the room that were still dirty. The shower curtain was not replaced as requested, the walls still were dirty above the trash bins.........and it may still be dirty because management had a very lax attitude about it all.
A small amount was deducted from our bill, that was the most they could do they said ---- We had a nearby event and didn't change hotels as we would have liked to, but we will not recommend this hotel to anyone.
