“Affordable comfort in the heart of San Francisco”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We really enjoyed our stay at the Opal on Van Ness in downtown San Francisco this weekend. The hotel is clean, convenient and affordable. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We loved the location and convenience. Free breakfast in the morning was adequate and we found the hotel to be very family-friendly and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The on-site parking was convenient but expensive. We were charged $30 each night for parking, with an additional 8% tax added this gets pretty steep. It seems kind of unreasonable to me to charge so much when the parking facility costs the hotel so little. Otherwise no complaints!

Room Tip: Their mini-suites are a great value and worthwhile for families. Rooms on the inside parking lot are...

Great hotel in a very convenient location, with easy access to public transportation. The staff is friendly, but not the most helpful or speediest to remedy problems. We had no major issues staying there, but I overheard many guests having issues (with reservations, noise, etc.). The breakfast wasn't really much to look forward to and there was never enough space in the breakfast room. They had a wonderful wine and cheese reception (although the girl serving knew little to nothing about wine). The rooms were clean and comfortable. Very safe neighborhood, but a few blocks from a not-so-safe neighborhood. Overall a good experience though.

Very nice hotel in San Francisco. Great value, wonderful staff, comfy beds, clean rooms and baths. I would stay here again and would recommend it to friends! Just down the street from a Philz Coffee, too. :)

The Opal is an older hotel on a busy street in San Francisco. It is just minutes to Union Square, City Hall, the Opera, ballet and a movie theater is next door. I found it centrally located and easy to travel to and from. We used the bus system to Fisherman's Wharf easily. The staff was very friendly and eager to help. The breakfast was simple: toast, muffins, coffee, juice, water, hard boiled eggs. It was just right for us. The room was clean and fresh. We were in the back and it was quiet. Do visit Tommy's Joynt across the street for a unique experience in dining and get to know the locals.

This little hotel is in a great location and a great value. Clean, friendly staff, and nice little continental breakfast in the morning. Has a very European feel and I have enjoyed staying here as well as recommending it to friends.

Room Tip: Get a room on the back side of the hotel away from Van Ness

The girl and I stayed at The Opal for our first San Francisco get-away. The staff was the friendliest and most helpful that I've ever encountered. After we asked about dinner recommendations, we were answered with a number of great places. They went further by writing down the names, numbers, favorite entrees, and directions for us.We had a corner room facing the street on the third floor. Street/neighbor noises were not a problem at all. Some of the decor and electronics were outdated, but who cares; you're in San Francisco, the hotel should be for showers and sleep only!(btw I loved their oatmeal scrubber soap bars haha) There was a slightly odd smell as others mentioned, but we didn't let it bother us. If your trip is for pleasure I recommend the corner bar across the street for a casual drink. It was featured on DDD; it's not upscale, but the drinks are great and as cheap as you'll find anywhere in SF. Also, Panta Rei is a great bang-for-your-buck Italian restaurant. Anderson's steakhouse was also a great experience, but the bill including drinks and tips for 2 of us was around $210 I believe. Panta Rei including a bottle of wine was only around $50. I also recommend looking up DDD diners for breakfast. We ate at two of them and they were amazing. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Ask for an upper level corner room facing the street. They give AAA discounts for parking as well.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

My husband and I booked this room as part of our honeymoon trip. We were looking for a boutique hotel experience. We found the customer service very good. We did not like the room very much, it smelled old, carpets were very worn out, and room was very small. The room was clean. We had a terrible view of a gravel rooftop below and our room faced the main street which is fairly noisy late into the night. Therefore, we could not open the window for fresh air unless we wanted to listen to traffic. Unfortunately we were unable to upgrade to a larger room with a better location due to the hotel being fully booked. We found the location not as close to the main sites as we would have hoped, however we enjoy walking and made the best of it.

Room Tip: Request a room not on the main road.
