It would not impress anyone, not a "sizzle" place, but the steak of it is... basic and OK, great for the price. For a hundred bucks more you can have the sizzle at a more upscale place. For good sleep, convenient location, reasonable price; perfect.

The good:

Great bed, nice linnens, comfy, great pillows, nice friendly staff, convined location on BART (Market St / 8th St exit), steady hot water, Starbucks in lobby if you're a coffee drinker, close to Moscone if your here for an event, quiet room (in rear, accomodated by staff when asked for), OK cable TV with HBO and good news, spacious room.

The Iffy:

Elegant turn of the century is code for old! It is old, although with nice renovations. Still old; no central A/C (just window unit), hall carpets could use a shampoo, no room safe, neighborhood is a little seedy withstreet bums galore, typical in SFO, but a short walk to little more upscale neighborhoods and shopping.

The bad: Nothing really bad.

Great stay, basic, economical, not a trendy hyped up place, very OK.

So I went with my mom, dad, 2 cousins, 2 sets of aunts/uncles, and 3 grandparents. As u can imagine, a relatively big group. So we went to San Francisco for the 4th of July celebration, and might I add, San Francisco has some sweet fireworks. So more about the hotel, parking is 20 dollars a car per night, with in and out privileges and valet parking. 20 bucks may seem like alot, but parking elsewhere in SF is prolly worse, so actually not a bad deal. The hotel room is relatively, bigger than those motel 8's or whatnot. Its got 2 full size beds i think? Not as big as the queen size but still a decent amount. They have rooms for the elderly, the handicap rooms. And those are convenient for the seniors with even more room and a different bathroom setup, which was quite nice. Its location is decent, but there are no major eating places around it, a few diners across the street thats about it. There is a starbucks under it for all your coffee needs and a pretty good looking restaurant, didn't try it cause it was a little pricey for our tastes, but its there nonetheless. The bathrooms overall were kind of small but its not unbearable, but get the handicap room and its huge (hint hint). It's right off the bart exit so you its easy to get to from out of town of if you're going somewhere like on a business trip and such. There are bus lines just a block or two down, which we used to get down to the docks. It's about a 10 minute bus ride so that's prolly recommended to use if you want to stroll around the bay. It has a story for historic moments in the hotel, as it is an older building but refurbished nicely, for those who want to learn about it. At 7 floors, it is one of the larger hotels in SF, besides those marriotts and others that cost 400 a night, so not a bad deal. There is free wi-fi in there so bring your laptops if you need it! If you need a quick stay in SF, and on a budget so you can't stay in marriotts and stuff, this is the place to go.

I had a very enjoyable stay at the Hotel Whitcomb this week. My room was in good condition, the maid service was friendly and thorough, and check in and check out went smoothly. I especially appreciated the care of the agent at check in who consolidated my two reservations, so that I would not have to move rooms. While the hotel is in a dicey area, the muni station is on the same block so I never had to interact with the homeless too much.

Let's keep this one short. Great hotel for its price. Location kind of out of the centre is no bother at all as you are one step away from public transporation and convenient shops around (such as the F-line, Starbucks, Walgreens, BK, Subway). Rooms are not that large but serve their purpose just fine if you're not going to be in your room all that much to begin with. The rooms are generally in condition, although you can tell it's age by the rust spots here and there. I had no problems with the obvious makeover this hotel has had (which make over apparently did not extend to the service rooms) if you look closely.
A plus is also the available wireless internet service. Worked just fine.
Just two complaints: one is the noice from the bathroom (a blender makes less noice and you actually have to close the bathroom to be able to still hear the tv). The other one is the apparently every day 05:00 am free wake up call by the laundry service in the alley on the side of the hotel which sounds like the garbage truck passing by, but then for atleast 20 minutes...What's up with that? My wife, who can sleep through a SFO earthquake, had no problems with that btw so if you're not a light sleeper like myself I guess this won't be a bother for everyone. It was for me. All in all however, not enough to decide that I wouldn't stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with my friend when I was visiting SFO in Dec 2008. I found it to be one of the most affordable hotels with a fairly good rating on tripadvisor.

The hotel has comfortable rooms, very friendly staff and an old world feel to it. Once you are inside you feel that time probably stopped sometime in the 40s.

The neighbourhood's ok till about 8 in the vening after which its kind of deserted.

I would advise talking a room in the higher floors as the noise of the street - police sirens (really loud) - is quite disturbing in the night. A lot of homeless people on the pavements outside the hotel. If you are a single traveller, it would be better to reach the hotel before 9 in the evening.

  • Liked — Right on Market street, easy access to public transport
  • Disliked — Noisy Neighbourhood
