“Charming Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

We just got home from a 5 night stay here. Our room was really cute. There was a little bit of peeling paint and a small part of the ceiling in the corner was buckled but those did not really upset us. It was not the biggest room but we got around fine and the tall ceilings made it seem more spacious.Plenty of drawer space for our clothes and a decent sized closet. The bed was very comfortable. It was really warm the day we checked in and no a.c. but the desk had someone bring us up a oscillating fan which made the temp in the room perfect! The little shop off the lobby made delicious coffee and there was also a 4 cup coffee maker in the room and the continental breakfast on the mezzanine so plenty of choices for your morning cup of joe!Locations could not be better. All staff were so nice, helping with directions, etc. We were extremely happy with the Powell Hotel and plan on staying here for our next trip out to SF!!!

Room Tip: We did ask for a quiet room in the back, but if you want a better view get one that looks over the c...

We stayed here for four nights and really enjoyed the hotel. I don't think you could get a better location as the cable car is just outside as are plenty of shops and places to eat in the shopping centre.
The hotel staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms we got were very spacious and clean. We were lucky in that we wanted a twin and got two rooms interconnected. The bathroon was quite small but adequate. It is an old colonial hotel so it is quite old, if you want modern this is not for you. The rooms have everything to make your stay comfortable, coffee making, hairdryer and iron and board which is very useful. There is even free bottled water. The only problem with the rooms is that the walls and ceiling are very thin allowing noise to come through.
There is even complimentary breakfast which consists of pasteries and tea, coffee and juice.
There is a very nice coffee shop just as you come into the hotel which serves soup etc.
I would recommend this hotel if you wish to be central and I would certainly stay again.

This property is never disappointing! The staff and surroundings are just exemplary ! The rooms are extremely clean, right in the center of San Francisco, and the people that work here are friendly, knowledgeable, and very sweet! If they are not a full house they upgrade, but you need to inquire. The best hotel for a getaway away from the frills and thrills that other hotels CLAIM to possess .This hotel has it all...location, location, location! No attitudes here. Pure, honest, attention!

Room Tip: On the side opposite of the cable cars, we spent six days here and after two we asked for a more, &q...

If you're looking for 5* luxury then don't come here but if you're looking for a clean, functional hotel in a fantastic location then you can't look past the Powell. On arrival, like other travellers we were a bit sceptical when we saw reception. It looks small, old and does smell a little bit funny. The customer service was ok - neither friendly nor unfriendly.
Once checked in, we took the elevator to our room and we were pleasantly surprised. Yes it's old, yes the paint is peeling in the odd corner but it's clean, spacious and you can feel the buzz from the street below. We had a cool view down onto the Cable Car turntable. The bed was also super comfy which was welcomed after a 13hour trip from the UK.
The little cafe/takeaway downstairs was also great and served fab coffee. All in all, a great trip.

We booked this hotel as a mystery hotel and once I discovered which hotel we were booked into and read the reviews, I was really worried. This hotel has not had a good rap. But things are changing. Firstly, we stayed three nights and saw no sign of bed bugs. What a relief. There has been some effort put into redecorating. There is a way to go but as with most SFO hotels, it is in an old building. There is a lot of street noise, but remember, you are in a premium downtown location. Remember you are paying a budget price in a high priced area. Yes the maid service was hit and miss and vacuuming wasn't great, but overall, this has been value for what we paid. Well done Powell for lifting your game.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing Powell as the cable car is right outside and its very noisy.

This hotel is advertised as a 3 star. Don't believe it. My room had no HVAC, instead it had an ancient little radiator heater. For cooling you had to open the windows. The room was not clean and one of the walls had blood splatter on it. If you are looking for a decent, centrally located hotel, look elsewhwere. My room was so bad that I checked out and went to a different hotel the same day.

Location really couldn't be better, just meters from the Powell BART station. Older hotel, nicely decorated in a modern style, and had a relatively spacious room. Sleep was great except for a squeak in the morning from the old fashioned radiator, but turn it off and the squeak went.
The free drinks on weekday evenings was a nice touch, and the breakfast, though basic, was more than sufficient. Would definitely stay here again.
