“Perfection from start to finish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

My wife and I stayed here last week for three nights, to celebrate our anniversary. From the moment we arrived until we checked out, we experienced perfect service.

Our Bay Bridge room on the 48th (top floor) at the corner was beautiful with stunning views including the Bay Bridge illuminated at night. The view from the bath tub was panoramic. The sky bridge is just along the corridor too.

Our spa treatments were heavenly and the therapists amazing.

Every member of staff made us feel welcome, with polished service with a friendly, perfectly pitched informal quality.

We dined in our room, and the restaurant and both experiences were lovely.

The complimentary house car and driver was available for us when we went out for dinner one evening.

Having stayed in hotels such as Four Seasons, Peninsular, Oberoi, Fairmont etc around the world, we rate our stay at the Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco as a highlight.

I would recommend the Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco mainly to business travelers. There is nothing wrong per se, but it just doesn’t have the luxurious atmosphere distinctive to most of other MOs and for a vacation purpose it’s just a bit too ordinary. However, the service is friendly and we got some good tips and restaurant recommendations from their concierge. I would avoid their bistro style restaurant, the food was rather tasteless (ok for breakfasts though). I’d also wish my partner’s birthday was recognized in some way.

We live in San Francisco but decided to spend the weekend downtown at the Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco to celebrate our anniversary. We had also done this 3 years ago, but that was before their renovation. They did a fantastic job re-doing the property. The rooms and public spaces were beautiful. Simple, clean designs.

It was a wonderful "staycation" for us where we did all the things we were able to do before having kids: sleep in late, explore downtown on foot, enjoy long leisurely meals at great restaurants (the hotel car took us to the Waterbar - yum!), take in a comedy show, and relax without commitment or distraction.

I even was able to squeeze in an 80 minute massage at their fantastic spa; so very relaxing.

Our corner room on the 46th floor afforded us spectacular views of SOMA and the Bay Bridge - a great vantage to watch the Bay Lights show. The binoculars in the room were a nice touch as well.

The only thing we felt the hotel was missing was a pool and hot tub.

Overall we had a terrific stay.

Had a wonderful stay at the MO SF recently for a special birthday. Deluxe City View room on the 44th floor had outstanding views, was large and spacious, and clean and comfortable. Would have loved the bathroom if it was bigger, as it was we only had one sink which made it tight for two to get ready. Service was extremely friendly and accommodating. We loved the complimentary hotel car, a very nice MB sedan, that we were able to reserve to drive us to dinner.

Minor misses include the birthday amenity being delivered late. The hotel knew we had dinner reservations at 8pm in another restaurant, and the birthday chocolates and champagne were not delivered by the time we left at 7:40pm. Finally there when we returned after 10pm, but were too full and tired to eat or drink anything by then. Also, when we called after dinner to see if the house car was available for pickup, we were told it was not, which is fine. The concierge never offered to call a cab or another car for us. Luckily, we were able to Uber our way back to the hotel in no time.

Lobby is very small and underwhelming, nothing grand like the Fairmont or other properties. Bar is small, and at happy hour was very crowded and loud. Restaurant and bar staff, though, was outstanding and very accommodating.

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the better the views.

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights on a business trip and it was excellent. The views out of the rooms across the bay were amazing. The hotel rooms were spacious and luxurious and the bed was really comfortable and cosy. Rooms were spotlessly clean and tidy as were the reception area and breakfast room. Hotel was in good location and was 10 minutes walk to union square.

Room Tip: Upgrade to room with a view of the bay - it is well worth it!

We stayed at the MO San Francisco for a few days as the first stop on our honeymoon earlier this month. The location, furnishings and views are amazing. These things you are granted in many high end hotels. The view is exceptionally exceptional! See the pics. However the point I want to make, as a person who has my own business now and has worked for large corporations previous to that, it is the staff that make any company a success.

From the moment you arrive, it is clear that the staff at MO San Francisco understand what it takes to make people feel welcome. What you probably wont expect is the way they will impress you with each and every opportunity you afford them.

You wont find a more personable or professional Porter than Rolando. He did all the normal things you expect from a Porter, but what I wasn't expecting, was for him to greet us by name, when we walked out the front doors to do some exploring 20 minutes after arrival and each and every time we came or went during our stay. His knowledge of the city and advice on places to take your camera are certainly worth asking. I really got the impression this was a man who was going somewhere with his life.

Janella who handled our check in was also excellent. Our room was not quite ready so she organised for us to have some drinks whilst we waited. She also sent us a handwritten card and a bottle of wine to congratulate us on our honeymoon. She was a very lovely person and we really appreciated the extra effort that she put in.

The hotel itself is very nice. The view was absolutely the best I have ever had, anywhere. The views of Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from the toilet was something you really don't expect! The room and bathroom was very nicely styled and appointed, the furnishings and linen were very high quality, the room impeccably clean.

The only complaints on the room itself were that the shower was very hard to turn on and off and the bathroom exhaust was very poor. The bathroom certainly steamed up a lot, even with the bathroom window open. This steam ended up condensing on the windows in our bathroom and the room itself, which ruined the view at night. Thankfully we showered quite late and had already enjoyed the view sufficiently. There was however no mildew or musty smell from the steam or condensation whatsoever.

The location is in the Financial District. It's very close the the Ferry Building Markets and Market Street. Market street was quite busy on the Friday of our stay, many shops open and lots of people around, a real buzz about the place. On the weekends however, Market Street was very quiet, almost dead. But then there seemed to be more activity at the Ferry Building including a local craft market on the weekend. I'm sure if there was an event it may be busy on the weekend but we certainly missed the buzz when Market street was more subdued on the weekends. It is very close by Tram or Taxi to so many places and you can walk to Union Square.

My best advice with regard to location of this hotel and getting around is to be very careful not to travel too far south of Market Street or West of Union Square or South West from Union Square or in that same direction down Market Street whatsoever. See the wikipedia article on "Tenderloin, San Francisco". I wish were were better advised by someone on areas to avoid in San Francisco. I'd suggest Tenderloin, Civic Centre, Mid-Market and South of Market are to be avoided completely. From the hotel if you head to Union Square (and don't go too far past it or get lost) or North into the city or North West down Market Street towards the Ferry Building everything is ok. Perfectly safe.

We got disorientated and caught the tram the wrong was down Market Street. It got quite interesting very quickly. Gangs (15 people or more) of undesirables hanging around the front of liquor stores, crack heads and derelicts everywhere. We decided to get out and get a Taxi. There was a crack head yelling out undecipherable crap and pulling the wiring out of a services manhole in the ground and throwing around a plank of wood. We felt very unsafe. Thankfully I am a 100kg/220 pound guy that can handle myself and would have thrown down if necessary. As a lone woman or in a small group it could have been quite threatening. To be frank as an Australian, I would feel the same way if I ended up in the wrong Neighbourhood of any major Australian City and have done so in both Sydney and Brisbane before, although in these cities it was at night.

The difference between Australia and American public safety is Police presence. In all the cities we visited in America it seemed as though the Police presence was severely lacking, as if the governments there are happy for businesses to fund private security to do some of the job of the Police. I assume the Police are under resourced in a country with 100% debt to GDP ratio. In Australia the Police are all about visible presence, particularly in public areas. I literally saw no police on foot during my whole time in America. Plenty of work to be done in San Francisco to make tourists feel safer.

Traveled for work and the MO was very close to my office. It is a ways from Fisherman's Warf and Union Square, but who doesn't like to walk the fantastic streets in San Fran! Gorgeous view, great restaurants around you, and the service was absolutely fabulous.

It is a bit pricey, but hey, you get what you pay for!

Room Tip: I chose a higher room for the views, but I've heard they are all fabulous.
