“Wonderful views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

Stayed over the New year in 2012. I got a follow-up call from the hotel after my on-line reservation (I was really surprised, never happened before) because I booked 2 rooms under my name and they checked if it was not a double booking. I mentioned that we were traveling with the kids and would like rooms "close to each other". Got a nice surprise at the check-in, not only they took note of it but up-graded the kids room so that we had a connecting room. The bellboy made a lot of efforts to welcome us through the room.
We had wonderful bay views (make sure to select your view when booking) and got to see the fireworks from the windows! WooW We saw sunrise and sunset colors as well as bridge lightings...it was a real pleasure to look through the windows, including bathroom with large view!
The bathroom is a little old fashion considering the price of the room, the beds were great. The room located at the corner of the floor was very quiet, which was pleasant considering the season. We had no elevators/door smashing, neighbors noise coming through. The financial district is not the busiest one during the holidays (walked to Chinatown on the first night) but the view is worth the choice.
The main disappointment was the breakfast, a la carte and very slow service, between the lobby and the elevators. We would have loved a buffet, so on Jan. 1st we just took it in the room before heading back to the airport. I didn't see any other restaurant so it seems short on dining options.
Overall it is an expensive hotel but I compared with same level hotels in SF in detail before booking and I still think that it was a good option. We had a marvelous stay!

Room Tip: Check the view options at booking if you want to see the bay at night

We stayed here for business and was extremely pleased with the hotel. The lobby is small, but I wasn't planning on staying in the lobby so don't be disappointed. The rooms are on the 38th floor on up. There are views of the city or the bridges from every direction. The rooms are small but there are so many nooks and crannies for your things. Loved, loved the bed. It has a temperpedic/cloud feeling and I slept so well. The bathroom is large and the products are nice. The location of the Mandarin is perfect if you are walking to the financial district or china town. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: If you want a view of a specific bridge then you have to ask for it.

Our stay in MO-SF in December 2012 was a memorable one. Rooms has stunning view, staff were warm and friendly, bed was comfortable and room was spacious. Only complaint is that the food standard is average. Andy and Mario the first faces at MO-SF makes you feel welcome and at home. We will be back! San Francisco is a charming city and it is love at first sight!

Having come from the MO in las Vegas what a come down very unimpressive lobby doorman, luggage and reception all in one area and with the new restaurant also in that area means that as you are dining bellboys are constantly going past with luggage trolleys chatting to guests, lifts old and when we stayed broke down and as we were on the 46th floor walking not an option so took us in the service lifts with all the cleaning staff coming out walking through dirty corridors and dirty piled high linen baskets this was seriously not impressive and was not fixed when we returned to our room after dinner, the manager tried his best but this hotel is not worthy of the MO brand it may have had a make over but very dated tiles, wires from the Christmas lights trailing along the carpets and the towels were worn, thin and the robes patchy in places on the positive side once we were moved our room was ok great views but would not stay here again must be better hotels in SF at this rate all other hotels on our trip were fantastic thiamine was a real let down

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for staying at Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco and for reviewing on Trip Advisor.

On behalf of the team, we apologize sincerely for not meeting your expectations during your stay and for the inconvenience caused to you due to the delays with our elevators. We are currently undertaking planned annual maintenance on our elevators which will address this concern. I realize that there is never a good time for such delays and we particularly regret any inconvenience to you over the holiday period. We are reviewing new approaches to improving the transportation of guests during any such outages.

We greatly appreciate your additional feedback about your stay which we have taken immediate steps to address, in the meantime, we hope we have the chance to demonstrate the service at Mandarin Oriental that we are known for with a return visit in the near future.

Sincerely,
Edwina Kluender

Stayed here for a business trip and was blown away. I was especially wowed by the "two bridges" view and the level of service. Quite exceptional on both fronts. Great bed, lovely room service breakfast, and a decent lobby bar with a great staff. Only frustration was the two elevators for the whole property which feels a bit under-served. Nonetheless, I think this is probably the best hotel in town. Highly recommended

Room Tip: Ask for the two bridges view

The renovation is now completed and the hotel fully reopened. There is no more entering the hotel through a construction corridor and registering at a makeshift front desk. There is no question the hotel needed a makeover - the only question is whether the Mandarin SF has risen to the expectations one has of other Mandarin Hotels or luxury properties in general. To this question, however, the jury remains out and is dependent on what is important to you.

Background: The hotel is located in an office building - the first few floors as well as the top floors are dedicated to the hotel. The views from the private rooms (not the bottom floors) are stunning and some rooms have views of both the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. The hotel is situated in the heart of the business district and - from my perspective - caters more to the business clientele. Because you are in the financial district, it is quiet on weekends and late evenings - though Union Square is within walking distance of the hotel. The Cable Car that runs down California Street is very close as is a BART station (Montgomery). The immediate area is full of office buildings and businesses that cater to the businesses.

Recent Changes: The main restaurant (Silks) and the lobby bar/restaurant have been consolidated into one restaurant in the lobby. In fact, the restaurant is the lobby. The area where Silks once was is now dedicated to additional meeting space. A beautiful but small/limited spa has been added as well as (thankfully) an expanded gym has been constructed (the previous facility resembled one that might be found at a motel). Long overdue, the rooms have been redone as well.

Service: Apart from the views, the main reason one would stay at the Mandarin SF is for the service. With a few notable exceptions, I have found the service provided at this Mandarin consistent with what one might find at other Mandarins or at Peninsula/Four Seasons Hotels - and, in some instances, superior. The service deserves a five-star rating and does offset some of the other hotel shortcomings. On a number of occasions staff have gone well out of their way to assist me.

Bottom Line: The hotel still lacks the "grandness" one might expect at other Mandarin Hotels, in spite of the renovation. The makeover of the gym and rooms were overdue and the spa makes a nice addition. The views remain great as well as the exceptional service. The removal of the one "grand" aspect of the hotel - Silks restaurant - is disappointing but makes business sense. The problem with rating the Mandarin SF is that there are strong positives as well as strong negatives, and depends on what you are seeking. However, if it is luxury is the only criterion, you might want to consider the Four Seasons (which is now renovating parts of its hotel now) or the St. Regis.

Room Tip: Get a room with the view of both bridges
