“Price and Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2014

This location is typical of large convention style properties that are found in the heart of major cities. The rooms were clean and fresh and the location (although 8 blocks away) is walkable to the bars and restaurants around Union Square. If you can secure a competitive price relative to other properties in the area - it is worth consideration.

Stayed here with my wife for a weekend trip to San Francisco. The hotel is well positioned for access to Chinatown and the North Beach area. Other major tourist locations are a short trip by taxi or bus. The room was quiet and clean. It did not come with a refrigerator which would have been handy after a big meal. The bathroom had a sliding pocket door rather than a conventional solid door and this bugged my wife. The lobby had two bar areas. We had drinks the night we arrived and it was OK. There was a breakfast area in the lobby but there are several much cheaper places in North Beach about two blocks away.

The hotel prices seemed rather high - over $300 a night - but SF is an expensive city. We spent most of the day away from the hotel so that may have been influenced our viewpoint. The concierge desk was helpful getting last minute dinner reservations. We did not use the fitness facilities. Elevators are very slow during peak hours.

Rapid check-in. Friendly, helpful staff. Accidentally ran into a couple of managers on the way in--very welcoming! As a Hilton Diamond member I received a room upgrade. Spectacular view from 26th floor, north side of building. Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower in the midground, the bay, Alcatraz, and Marin in the distance. Clean room with very comfortable bed, nicely placed TV and extensive work area alongside the single, large window. Plenty of electrical outlets!

Executive Lounge was inviting. Could have been a little bigger for the breakfast rush, but breakfast was good and the hors d'oeuvre offerings in the evening even better. (There was one dessert item--some kind of dessert bar--I had trouble finishing, but most of the evening food was decent.) Four different newspapers were available in the morning (and afternoon, too, if I remember right).

The location is great if you want to sample a variety of SF neighborhoods. China Town and North Beach are within spitting distance. City Lights Books is a three block walk. The Transamerica Pyramid is close by and has a wonderful little park nestled at its foot--closed at night, so make sure you catch it during daylight hours. The walk to Coit Tower is a little more than half a mile--panoramic views from the top. Russian Hill is about a mile's walk. Nice and steep toward the end but well worth it. It's a fairly easy walk to Fisherman's Wharf via Columbus Avenue and Taylor Street.

Lots of dining, walking, and other recommendations from Jeff the concierge. He was very upbeat and enthusiastic and easily won my Most Valuable Staff Member award. He deserves a raise, and I hope he gets it, because I forgot to leave him a tip.

Sometimes the elevators were slow, but sometimes there was no waiting. It isn't really a problem if you're on a leisurely vacation. Just don't forget anything in your room when you're leaving the hotel during the busiest times. Parking is expensive but I preferred the self-park option over the valet. A bit cheaper and very convenient: easy-in, easy-out. The only other negative for me . . . a few (mostly dark) streets near the hotel that you might want to avoid walking down late at night.

Overall, I really enjoyed the place. I'm definitely coming back.

Room Tip: Ask for that north facing view on a high floor.

Our stay at the Hilton Financial District was one of the top highlights of our visit to San Francisco in May 2014. We enjoyed a fantastic view of the Bay, Alcatraz, Chinatown and points in between from our room on the executive level. It was well worth the money just for the view from our balcony with the amenities in the executive lounge a big plus. The location very near Chinatown was also within walking distance of the Piers and all there is to see and do in that area. Although we did not spend a lot of time at the hotel, our experience there was great service from the time we arrived until we left. We always received a friendly greeting from the staff and they were helpful with any request.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and get a room on the executive level with a view of the bay.

I stayed here for one night only and decided to move out right away.
Don't get me wrong, hotel is beautiful, nice rooms and very nice staff. But for me, it comes down to location.. This property is in the middle of the financial district which means - something like china market.
Too busy during the day and a bit scary to walk around alone after dark.
Honestly, it was scary walking around during the day, let alone after dark.
If you are going for work and your work is close by- it's a great place.
If solo - specially a girl- I would say find alternative locations.

It would be hard to imagine more plastic smiles than those sported by the staff at the Hilton as they mess up your car rental booking, leave you hanging around and cost you a small fortune above and beyond the verbally agreed price. For a non US citizen the tipping is fierce for jobs that people are already paid to do and the value for money is south of cr*p.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel

The room and service were nice. They have an on-sight restaurant, but of course it was really expensive. They did not offer in-room mini fridges, or have a pool/hot tub. It is a 10 minute walk to a grocery store. It is in Chinatown, so if you are looking for something outside of Chinese food nearby you may be disappointed. The hotel was very clean and I felt safe and comfortable there, even when I was alone. Overall a good place, especially for the price. I would stay here again.

Thank you very much for submitting a review. We are thankful for the generous scores and kind comments. Our hotel is also close to Little Italy, which is on Columbus, just 3 blocks north of us. There are also a number of restaurants south of us which have Japanese, French, and American cuisine. We hope that you will return for our team to provide some of our nearby favorites. Once again, thank you for the review and the generous scores.
