“It's just like home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013 via mobile

My son and I started staying at the Handlery hotel 13 years ago when he was undergoing chemo therapy at UCSF. For 3 years Mr Handlery comped our rooms. His generosity and his staff made our journey less stressful and very comfortable during that time. Christopher has been cancer free for 13 years now and many of our milestones in his recovery have been made at the Handlery hotel. We now get to make numerous trips to the city "just for fun"!
There is a lot to be said about a hotel where there is no turnover in employees. In the last 13 years the entire staff has watched my son turn into a healthy and happy 16 year old.
About the hotel-the rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff and service is incredible and the daily grill is a fun place for food and drinks!
We can't say enough good things about Mr. Handlery, his hotel and his staff. Nor can we ever thank them enough for all of the good they have done for our family.

The Handlery is a decent, clean hotel right in the heart of Union Square. It is certainly a good value compared to some of the high-rise hotels in the area, though nothing particularly distinguishes it either. Rooms are smallish, the wide screen TV doesn't show HD channels, the bathroom is OK but with little counter space to put toiletries, the wifi is free but glacial, the closet is small. Nevertheless, is is comfortable enough and the location is fantastic and there is nothing serious to complain about.

Currently staying there leave tomorrow, it's an historic hotel brought up to date whenever possible, front units are a little noisy at night, but we enjoyed hearing seeing the street scape, service was excellent, staff happy and helpful, valet was a bit steep at $50 a night effectively but the location is great, just a few steps from Union square. Restraint and bar are nice but restraints expensive, just next door is a great bar servers called lefty... For $40 for 3 for dinner it is great and atmosphere is terrific. Numerous at galaries close by, macys next door, tourist buses leave at union square, just loved it, I might note the handerley at San Diego is modern asd service there is excellent and prices brilliant!

Room Tip: Front are great, rear probably quiter but you miss the street action, plus front ones are much quick...

The Handlery is mediocre, but at least the price is fair. The furnishings in my room were decent, and the bathroom was roomy and well-appointed. But my king bed, and its bedding, were cheap and uncomfortable, the television set had a picture quality circa 1953 and was unwatchable, and the carpet in the room looked to be substantially older than I am. Overall, my room appeared old and tired. The attached restaurant was fine; decent food and at a fair price.

I come to SF often for pleasure and business, and thus have stayed at a few different places in the city and near the airport. My usual hotel was not available this time, and the Handlery - located in the envious Union Square area during this peak holiday season of December - was available at a bargain price on Hotels.com, so I went ahead and booked it.

The hotel is a 3 at best in my opinion. If you can book the hotel for sub-$300, then I think it:s worthwhile because of the amazing location. Cons first, then the very positive Pros.

The facilities/rooms are dated, showing heavy signs of wear; the room decor looks like it's still from the 90's. This is not a complaint, just an observation. Having said that, the room and carpets did appear very presentable and clean, thus my comment on the aged appearance is not intended to imply that it is a run-down or unpresentable hotel. I was in SF during a cold snap, and it took forever to raise the temperature of the room from freezing. I had the thermostat on 90 F but had to keep my scarf and sweater on for hours until the room was a more normal temperature. The structure of the hotel is odd, from the parking garage where you valet your car to the lobby, you have to walk through the entire hotel, past the pool. And you may very well have to walk back if your room is in the wing by the parking garage. The wifi connection is extremely weak - web pages were slow to load up. I ended up using my cell phone as a wifi hotspot in order to get work done at a reasonably speed. (On the flip-side, free wifi is still rare these days, so I should appreciate the fact they have that, esp for international travelers who won't have cell plans in the US.)

On the plus side, my room was extremely spacious by any big city standard. It fit 2 Queen beds comfortably, with plenty of extra room to walk around, and even had a little sitting area. Usually rooms in SF, esp this centrally located, are very tiny and not much value for money. The overnight valet is one of the least expensive I have ever experienced in SF at $42. I'm used to expecting $70+/night for overnight valet parking, the cost often factors into whether or not I will stay in that hotel. And finally the best aspect of this hotel of all : LOCATION! If you are in SF as a tourist or for shopping in Union Square, you really cannot beat this location at this price. You can walk to all the major shops, the area is safe and convenient. There are 2 Starbucks behind the hotel out the O'Farrell St exit (via the hotel garage). I am truly amazed I got this room at this rate, given this location.

Hope this review helps, I know it can be difficult to find a good value-for-money trade in SF hotels.

Wow, what an amazing experience at the Handlery. I would not recommend staying anywhere else, Union Square as opposed to Fisherman's Wharf is most definitely the place to stay. We were spoilt and upgraded to a suite with a stunning view of Union Square and enough space to fit a family of 6! The service is outstanding, rooms were always cleaned when we got back from a days shopping or sightseeing. There are too many restaurants to choose from nearby, I recommend the Japanese to the left of the hotel called Sushi Boat House (I think). There is a sightseeing group at the steps of Union Square who offer great day tours (we did the Golden Gate Bridge) for as low as $20 p/p and it is definitely worth while. I just want to thank Jon and his great time for a wonderful stay at the Handlery, it was without a doubt the highlight of our 3 week US trip!

Room Tip: If you can afford to, make the upgrade with a view!

Just returned from my annual visit to The Handlery Hotel at Union Square, San Francisco. Learned it is the last family owned hotel in San Francisco. Have been going at Xmas time for the last 20 some years and always feel welcome. Staff is accommodating, friendly, efficient and caring. Would not even consider staying anywhere else. It is centrally located to shopping, cable car, restaurants, theaters. Would highly recommend it with no hesitation.

Room Tip: Request a room in the tower section. and on the inside.
