“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

We stayed at the Handlery in June and found the hotel to be in a great location.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming and nothing was a problem for them. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable and there was extra pillows if needed. The only problems we found with the room was the bathroom was small and only room for one person at a time.
Also there was no curtains in our room only blinds which made the room light very early in the morning. Also all traffic could be heard especially sirens and trucks reversing but the area was very busy day and night so it was accepteble for being in such a good location.
Breakfast was included at the Daily Grill which was very good with a limited menu.
We also ate at Lori's dinner which was an old fashioned diner with a good priced menu and good portions. If you turn left out of the hotel and first left the diner is on the left with a car in the window. If you want to get the tram for fishermans wharf it is a five minute walk away. Turn right out of the hotel then first right and the tram stop is at the bottom of the hill.
Would recommend the hop on hop off bus tour which can be picked up from union square.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the less noice from the busy roads around the area.

The hotel is in the perfect location if you want to be close to downtown Union Square. We booked a historical Queen room and it was very small, bed felt smaller as well, more like a double size than a queen size. Only used the pool once as every time we wanted to relax by the pool at the end of the day, there were always children there as well jumping and splashing. Hotel staff was very nice. We would definitely stay at the hotel again.

I shared a spacious twin room in the old part of the hotel that had the added bonus of a dressing area (large wardrobe, dressing table, stool) giving us plenty of room to spread out our luggage. While the bathroom decor comes from a bygone era (pink tiles, genuine retro!) it was clean and well maintained. While the outlook was internal, the room was still light and despite previous comments, quiet.

We enjoyed free wifi in the room and complementary breakfast at the Daily Grill (a limited menu with generous servings).

The Handlery still has the feeling of a family hotel from the '50s. Good service, cheerful reception and maid. Happy Hour at the Daily Grill, once more with free wifi for guests, provides a good opportunity to recover from a busy day. The food's good as well.

Would have liked to use the pool but couldn't find a changing room and didn't fancy heading back towards the lift near the lobby in swimwear.

I'd happily recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the Union Square area. Yes, there are lots of homeless people in this part of the city,so don't stray too far away from the main shopping area if you're not an experienced traveller but the area has a lot to offer, being so close to transport. Don't forget your room key gives you a discount at Macy's.

By husband and I aren't picky- we like clean, quiet and well-located hotels and tend to stay away from anything overly stuffy and pretentious. The Handlery Union Square met all of these needs for us!
We looked this hotel for $139 a night on Travelzoo (a steal for Union Square). The hotel could not be in a better location and the staff goes above and beyond to accommodate guests (there wasn't one time I cursed under my breath that customer service is dead).
Knowing it was our honeymoon, we were upgraded to a Premier King room which was very spacious and I would suggest this room to everyone when booking- enough room to move around without bumping into each other all the time. The room itself was very clean but a little worn. The carpet was coming up a bit in the corners of the room and there were some areas where the molding on the wall was lifting but by no means unsafe or unsanitary.
The air conditioner was so loud that we had to sleep with earplugs. We mentioned this to the front desk and they sent someone who was unable to do anything to make it better.
Aside from these little snags, you are looking at a great hotel without the bells and whistles that will accommodate you for for your trip to San Francisco! Enjoy!

Room Tip: Mention if you are there for a special occasion- they really go above and beyond. It was so apprecia...

Beautiful hotel right opposite Union Square in San Francisco. This hotel is quaint, the staff are fantastic and the rooms are a little small but well furnished and have a great feel about them. Internet is fast, TVs are great and beds are also good.

Position is fantastic and it competes with the Westin and a few other larger chains. I would always go for the Handlery.

Room Tip: The old quarter is smaller but the rooms are quaint and face Geary Street and Union square, the new...

G'day MarkyGus,
Thank you for choosing the Handlery Union Square Hotel on your recent stay in San Fran. I am glad you enjoyed our location and found the staff service fantastic. I have visited Melbourne and it reminds me of San Francisco with it's trolley cars, older architecture and great food. Hope to see you again from the land DownUnder.

This place is perfect for visiting San Francisco. Steps from the cable car lines, bus stops right in front, restaurants everywhere and just a short walk to the BART station. We almost stayed in Fishermans Wharf but changed to the Handlery and glad we did. Don't let complaints of street noise and homeless scare you away, your gonna have that everywhere in San Francisco. Even if you stayed at one of the 2 Westin hotels that are close by, noise and panhandlers will be there and you will be paying double for what you can get the Handlery for. We couldn't ask for a better location and a better staff to deal with. We mentioned the night before we checked out that we needed a 430AM cab. Paul had a cab waiting on us at 420am and we made our early flight home with time to spare. Perfect location and a great place to call home while visiting San Francisco. The WIFI was a little weak in our room, and our neighbors in the next room got a little noisy our last night. A call to the front desk was all I had to do to quiet the neighbors down. Stay here and you WON'T regret it.

This hotel is in the right location but after paying $100 less per night for 5 star in Los Vegas it was an expected (from previous reviews) but still a bit of a shock. We stayed on the "new side" but it must still be at least 15 years old. The room was very clean and the showers are always hot; as you are out enjoying this fantastic city all day you just crash after a hot shower in to a clean bed every night so it's ok as at least you don' t have to walk up some massive hill to get to a lot of similar price hotels. The housekeeping and door staff are very friendly, the concierge was somewhat full of himself but knowledgeable.
