“The complete hotel experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012

Going by Tripadvisor reviews, Hotel Drisco was an obvious choice for the final two nights of our Western USA tour, celebrating my wife's 50th birthday.

It exceeded expectations! As a birthday present, the hotel upgraded us to a spacious city view suite, and provided gorgeous cake and champagne as part of the birthday package. We stayed in some classy hotels during our trip, but this was undoubtedly the best for comfort, for service, for attention to detail and for its relaxed ambience.

Some reviewers have criticised the location, but we loved Pacific Heights with its grand houses, astounding views and exhilarating climbs. Had we stayed longer than 2 nights we would have sussed out public transport options for getting into the city, but we managed fine with the free town car (a stretch limo!) in the morning and a 10 dollar taxi ride back.

We knew from the reviews that breakfast would be something special and so it proved, with truly delicious buffet items sourced from all over the USA and Europe - again, attention to detail makes all the difference. With so much to do in this wonderful city we struggled to get back to the hotel in time for the afternoon wine and cheese reception, but just made it, and enjoyed it greatly, on our second day.

There is something magical about staying in a hotel where every detail is perfect, guests are treated like royalty, and all the staff go about their business with an air of quiet confidence. After 50 years of worldwide travel I can count on the fingers of one hand the hotels where I have been privileged to experience this, and Hotel Drisco is among the best of them.

My husband, two daughters, and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay for six nights at the Hotel Drisco. We had booked a one bedroom suite but were pleasantly surprised when they put us in a city view suite, room 204A. The room was spacious (even with the sleep sofa opened up) and immaculate, and because the hotel is in a residential section of the city, we never heard any street noise and slept very soundly. The breakfast was much more than a continental breakfast and offered a large variety of items; yogurts, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, pastries, bagels, cereals, cheeses and more. All of it was delicious! We were at the wine and cheese hour twice and that too had lots to chose from. In addition, each day we found bottled water and wonderful chocolate cookies in our room when we came back from sight seeing!
Each and every staff member was friendly, helpful, enjoyable to talk to, and very knowledgable about San Francisco and the surrounding areas. Parking was not a problem at all on the streets around the hotel. They do offer a free car service to take you to Union Square too, since the hotel is removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown. That's really the charm of this place; it's a very unassuming hotel tucked away in the middle of a beautiful residential area. There are some nice restaurants close by, and a nice area nearby on Fillmore street with shopping and restaurants also.
I don't think you can go wrong choosing this lovely place. The staff are wonderful and went out of their way to be helpful in a very easy going manner. This was a great choice for our family. Our children were warmly welcomed and very comfortable during our stay. I would highly recommend this hotel and hope we have the chance to return!

We stayed at the Drisco on the last stop of our honeymoon, and what a way to round things off.
Everything about the hotel oozes class. The location of the hotel, although a couple of miles away from the centre of the city, is fantastic. The surrounding houses are beautiful and it definelitely felt much safer walking the neibourhood at night than it did downtown.
The hotel itself is immaculately kept and our room was both spacious and stylishly decorated.
The staff were very knowledgable, polite and attentive and gave us some really useful information regarding travelling and places to visit in the city.
The continental breakfast was delicious as was the wine and cheese reception (that were held every evening).
If there was one thing that counted against this wonderful little hotel it would be the fact that there wasnt alcohol available after certain times and wasn't stocked in the mini bar.
I would recommend the hotel to anybody who would like to stay in a classy part of the city, rather than amongst all the hustle of the city centre.
Thank you to all at the Drisco for a fabulous stay!

I stumbled on this hotel via Tripadvisor. A great little hotel in a quiet neighborhood. The staff was friendly and it was a wonderful breakfast included in the morning -- well beyond the usual continental breakfasts at lesser places as well as a wine tasting with nice hors d’oeuvres in the early evening. The beds and linens are wonderful -- you can sleep with the windows open since the neighborhood is residential and very quiet.

My only "con" is the lack of a restaurant for a meal or lounge for a drink in the evening. To be fair they do provide room service with a few light items and there are some wonderful restaurants nearby as long as you are willing to walk a few blocks on some steep San Francisco hills -- or of course drive or take a taxi.

This hotel is not in the hustle and bustle of the city. It you want to walk to the sights of the city this may not be the place but transportation via bus is nearby and you can take a cab or if you like to walk -- this is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: The one elevator is slow -- if you can't walk up and down stairs get a room on the ground level.

My boyfriend and I spent four nights at the Hotel Drisco in April. I would definitely recommend this hotel. I am very picky with hotels and will pay a little more for a nice, clean, quiet hotel. This hotel is all of these things, and it has a lot of charm too. Hotel Drisco offers a free breakfast, helpful employees at the front desk, and turn down service with free cookies (yum!). In addition, they also offer a free car service in the mornings if you don't want to take public transportation. We took advantage of the car service two mornings until we figured out the correct bus line that runs near the hotel. The neighborhood is full of beautiful homes and is great for taking evening walks. There are also a few nice restaurants within walking distance (on Fillmore Street). The only downside is that you can't control the temperature of your room, but the windows open and that worked for us.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your wonderful comments about your stay with us.

It is a fair comment to mention the fact that the Drisco's original steam radiator heating system lacks in-room controls. Given San Francisco's temperate climate, our experience with controlling the building's heat as a whole, and the fact that our windows open wide, very few guests ever experience a problem.

However, because we are always looking for ways to improve the guest experience here at the Drisco, we are working with several heating companies at the moment to install devices in the rooms that will allow for individual guestroom temperature regulation. Be sure to look for more news about this project on our web site as well as here on Trip Advisor.

Kind Regards,

John Spear

My husband and I ended a CA trip in San Francisco & stayed 3 days at the Hotel Drisco. We enjoyed our stay immensely and found the service spot on at Drisco. The staff was helpful without being obtrusive, and gave wonderful recommendations. We enjoyed the understated feel of the hotel & look forward to staying there again soon.

My husband and I purchased an auction package that included the Driscoll hotel so we came taking our chances. This is a boutique hotel with some limitations. The building itself is older so no air conditioning, no on-sight resturant or bar, and no outdoor seating or patio. The most difficult was finding on-street parking and when located it was on a steep hill!

But the assets Far outweigh any difficulty. This is a place where the service is consistent and sure to spoil you for anywhere else. In advance of our visit we asked for resturant recommendations and Marty arranged for some of the best dining experiences ever. We highly recommend this if you don't already have your favorites. The continental breakfast is superb. For a cold breakfast the offerings are so bountiful you don't miss anything hot. You eat in elegant room with fresh flowers throughout the room and several choices of national and international newspapers to choose from. Added fun were bottles of water in the room personalized for the hotel with picture of the Driscoll on the inside. Our grandchildren loved them!
If you want to be pampered, this is the place to go.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your wonderful review.

You are absolutely correct that there are some services and amenities that the Drisco simply does not offer, such as air conditioning, a full restaurant/bar or outdoor seating. However, from our perspective these are only liabilities if you are expressly looking for these types of amenities. And if you are, that is quite alright! We are so invested in making sure that you have a wonderful stay in our lovely City of San Francisco that we would be delighted to recommend hotels to suit any specific requirements you may have.

However, as you also point out, we believe that we have something very special to offer here at the Drisco -- personalized service that is second to none and a stunning array of high-quality complimentary extra touches. Oh, and let's not forget those fun Drisco water bottles!

Kind Regards,
