“Unique hotel in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

Efficient check in. Lovely unusual decor throughout the hotel. Room was clean and roomy. Excellent location for getting around San Francisco. Right next to trolley car tracks. Parking across road. Downside? The bath and shower were period features which though very original I personally don't like shower curtains. There was also a view of the hotel 'workings?' From the bathroom window , which could have been improved by a blind or curtain.

This is a CHARMING, comfortable, well situated hotel. The staff is friendly and helpful. The decor is a delight of detail!
Parking across the street was affordable and easy. The neighborhood felt safe. There are restaurants and public transportation nearby.

Although the room was small it was attractive, functional and completely adequate. The bathroom was the same. Breakfast was tasty, beautifully served and included in the room price.
This was a great place to stay!

The hotel is located very central and the Cable Car passes by practically just outside the door. The staff is really friendly and helpful. We needed some advise on places to visit and got some really good advise and proposals in a very friendly and helpful way. The room was clean, quiet and the bed left nothing to ask for, so we slept really well, however jetlagged we were. Breakfast served is good, served in a fantastic room, ancient French style. If we are going to SF again the choice will be easy: this is the place to stay!

We stayed in the Cornell Hotel de France for 5 days and loved it.
Each floor is devoted to an individual artist, we were on the Chagall floor, with posters and prints of Chagall on the walls of the hallway. The room was large with two beds, on the 4th floor, with windows looking out onto the street.
There is a wonderful cage elevator, that I'm sure will frighten a few people, but it reminded us of Paris in the 50's.
It was $113 a night, but with the usual tax it came to $157, which, for San Francisco is not bad.
That also included a breakfast of two choices, French toast or eggs with bacon and fried potatoes.
Only one problem, the bathroom is not really set up for the elderly. A wonderful very large claw tub, but to high to climb into, and there are no grab bars. At 76. I could handle it, but my partner is 83, and no way he could.
There is also a Cable Car stop on the corner of Bush and Powell. Good luck trying to find a place on it.
There is also a comfortable lounge on the first floor, and a room set up with chairs and tables for coffee.
The Jeanne d'Arc restaurant is good for breakfast, but a bit expensive for dinner for us. Also there are life size stature of Jeanne around the hotel. A hoot!
Would we stay there again? Most definitely.

Ambience, location, friendly helpful staff, decor, charm, good breakfast, every room slightly different with hand painted flowers, even quaint shower fixtures which worked perfectly after being trained by the night desk clerk who told us they were "very French". All made our first night there so delightful we retuned for 2 more nights a week later.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights with two other couples in April, 2013. We found the hotel staff to be very courteous (definitely French), the hotel is quaint, quiet even though the SF Powell St. Trolley is only steps away, and rooms are typically European sized. Each morning we were served an American breakfast (included) and had we known about their gourmet French restaurant, would have experienced that as well. When we return to SF we will definitely look to return to this hotel.
