Stayed for 3 nights in Sept 2012. Great Location, Great Price. Very clean. Small hotel and older style but well maintained. The room we had was a small room however was fine for the 2 of us. The free breakfast is great. Free Wifi. Close to Cable cars, Union Square, Powell St Bart. Would definitley stay here again when visitng San Fran.

Room Tip: We stayed at the back of the hotel. We had a window into a service duct however it was very quiet...

We had a great experience...especially impressed with the decor and ambience and the quality of food and staff friendliness. We were treated very nice at all times, very helpful. The food was excellent and worth the price. The hotel is close to cable cars and great for walking around and the parking garage was very convenient.

Stayed at Cornell Hotel de France for 3 nights while at a conference at the Hyatt Regency. About a 20-25 minute hike from the Hyatt Regency and Ferry Building (uphill to the hotel) but well worth the walk. Room was small and similar to European style hotels but was clean and staff were friendly. Breakfast started a bit late (7:30am) but was much better than the typical hotel continental breakfast with great speedy service. Very close to China Town and many great food options. I'd definitely stay here again when in San Francisco.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor were nice and quiet at night.

Great location...close to Union Square. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. I was visiting for the Nike Women's Marathon and returned late to my room. They accommodated me with a later check out so that I could shower before leaving. Room was small but clean and quaint. I would definitely stay again for the price and location.

This was my second stay at the hotel since the first 3 years ago. I continue to love this place. Charming, small, family-run hotel close to Union Square with a terrific american breakfast with table service that comes with the room. Our room was on the first floor in the rear of the building, across from the owners quarters. I am wondering if it was previously the owner's quarters as it had a stale odor of dogs. Yes, the owners have two on the premises, but you rarely see them. As a dog owner and lover myself, it is so easy to get used to your pets' smell, and therefore never notice the smell your home acquires. I think the owners have fallen into this trap, as at the end of the trip, I too got used to the smell. However, I am sure this smell will turn other travelers off and sincerely wish that they would take this problem seriously. I doubt this other floors have this problem. And, yes the rear of the building is very quiet.

My other recommendation is that the hotel owner try to iron a dress shirt on the ironing boards that they supply at the hotel. They are the little flat things. I asked the staff if there was a normal sized board available and they told me that they got rid of all of them. They should keep at least on full sized ironing board for those of use who really need it. We could at least return it to housekeeping when we were done.

We stayed in the Cornell Hotel de France for two nights in late September 2012. I had requested a quiet room, and we were assigned room 301, which looks out onto Bush Street. Based on other Tripadvisor reviews of this hotel, I believe there are quieter rooms located in the "back." Having no way to make a comparison with those, I can advise that room 301 served us well. One can hear some street noise, but it wasn't anything that upset us.

The hotel is very quaint, not unlike what one would expect to find in France. It is beautifully decorated, and it comes off as a shrine to Joan of Arc. It has an antique elevator, the kind that has two sliding doors that must be operated one after the other. It is about as far from a cookie-cutter, sterile, corporate chain hotel as you can get. Free internet is included, as is a complete breakfast, which is great value for money. There is a pay-as-you-go computer in the downstairs lounge if you need to go online ($1 for 15 minutes.) The dining room where breakfast is served is truly beautiful. It is apparent a great deal of restoration has taken place throughout the hotel, but none more so than in the dining room. I told my wife it looks like the owners hired the same people that created the buildings and scenery in Disneyland, as faux stonework, wooden beams, and other period details abound throughout the property.

The hotel is centrally located downtown, and is steps from the Powell Street cable car line. A walk to the Powell Street BART station will take you about 12 minutes going down the hill (we used BART to get to SFO for our return flight home). There are plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood, and Chinatown is only a couple of blocks away. Great shopping is located steps from the door.

All in all, we would stay here again, as the hotel certainly met our expectations, and the people who work there are very outgoing and friendly.
