“Just LOVE the Hotel Carlton”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

We spent three days at the Hotel Carlton. We rented two rooms. The staff was incredible!!! They always greeted us with a warm welcome every time we walked through the door. We felt like royalty and family at the same time. The rooms were spacious and clean. A great stay! Thank you to all! Especially Emilee, Edgar, Marc, Johnny!

Loved this place! In queen room on top floor. Nice pleasant hall way leading to your room, a bit of old world charm, not big but very tastefully decorated. Cheerful colour palate. Comfortable beds, o.k. pillows. Ceiling fan. Friendly staff, and little evening 5:30-6:00 wine downstairs was a nice touch. No body lotion, or fridge in rooms.... A place you look forward to going back to at the end of the day. Great location too. I would definitely recommend Hotel Carlton.

We stayed for three nights. The room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the staff was very helpful. I cannot say enough for the staff. The location was pretty central to be able to walk to lots of things in SF, and they were very close to public stransportation.

Check in was quick and easy and the staff very friendly and helpful. Interestingly the guy that checked us in was great at selling tours etc and signed us up for a couple he was extremely friendly and helpful, once we were signed up and paid he didn't want to have anything to do with us again, he had obviously got his commission.
The room was comfortable but a little small and the bathroom was cramped but everything was very clean. The area the hotel is in is Ok but the Tenderloin District is right around the corner and is pretty rough and lots of homeless hang around the area. But if you walk the other way no problems and Union Square is only a 10 minute walk away.
We stayed for 5 nights and we were more than happy with the hotel, they even have free wine tasting at 5.00pm every night, very enjoyable.
There is a Middle Eastern restaurant within the hotel, we only ate there once but the food was amazing, very tasty and reasonably priced.
The walls are a little thin and if your neighbours are noisy is could be a problem but we were lucky and apart from a couple of times everything was quiet.
We enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would stay again if we return to the beautiful city of San Francisco.

Stayed at Hotel Carlton for 2 nights in June 2014. If you are someone who enjoys luxury hotels and plans to spend a lot of time in your room, this is probably not the right place for you. However, if you plan to be out and about most of the time, don't mind doing some walking, and just want somewhere clean and cute to lay your head at night, it's a good choice (so long as you're not too light a sleeper)! Would rate 3.5 if possible, but am rounding up to 4 because they were nice.

Pros: Cute global-themed decor. Very friendly staff, from the front desk people down to the housekeepers. They were nice enough to tell us about a much cheaper alternative to their own valet service (surface lot a block away) which saved us almost $50. There is a happy hour with complimentary wine every day, though we never partook as we were out and about. Rooms were spotless. There is a cable car stop on the California line only a couple blocks away (highly recommend taking this line if you're bent on riding the cable car as it is much less crowded than the others.)

Cons: No air conditioning, as it is an older hotel. Depending on your temperature preferences, this is not necessarily a problem in San Francisco - opening the window is probably sufficient for most people. However, depending where your room is located, opening the window may subject you to all kinds of noise at all hours of the night. Our first room on the 3rd floor overlooked the alley where the dumpsters are located, and we were treated to the sounds of people throwing out trash all night and crazy banging that sounded as though the dumpsters were being thrown at the buildings at 3 AM. The concierge happily changed our room to a quiet top-floor room without any issue the next morning, and we slept great on night #2.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, make sure to ask for a quiet room on a higher floor.

I was in town for a surgical procedure. I stayed both pre and post surgery. I think they felt so sorry for me as I was miserable after total hip replacement, they upgraded me into a king suite. I will never forget their kindness.

Hotels in SF can sometimes be terribly overpriced, so we were happy to get a really good price on a mid-week overnight stay. Hotel is cute and very clean, and all the staff we dealt with were very friendly and accommodating. Rooms are nice but on the small side. Location is OK, and public transportation isn't too far away. Our only complaint concerns the bathroom sink. It's the really shallow kind, and the drain was pretty slow, so it was hard to keep one's hands clean even as one tried to rinse them under the faucet.
