“Nice hotel, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

This is a nice hotel, with very helpful staff. My room, on the 3rd floor at the front if the hotel had a remodelled bathroom, very nice. The room was clean with a nice large flat screen HD tv. A seven minute walk, mostly downhill to Union Square where you can easly pick up either city tram or open top hop on hop off bus for a tour of SF. Getting back to the hotel,i took the city bus as it was uphill, so for under two bucks we took the lazy option! Oh, if want to do Algatraz make sure you book online(we did), as we were there on Sunday but all booked up until Friday. We really enjoyed SF this time, so much more cleaner than our first visit 10 years ago

Room Tip: We liked the front of the hotel, as not bothered about the buses driving past at night

I had made a reservation at a Union Square hotel until a friend advised that there was heavy construction on the nearby streets.
I decided to try The Carlton based on her recommendation.
It is close enough to be accessible to Union Square, but far enough to feel removed from all the
noise and crowds and traffic.
Reception and staff were very friendly at all times. The room, a superior king, was comfortable and clean. Incredible value for weekend stay.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and look forward to returning.

Always a wonderful stay at the Carlton Hotel. The hotel staff is so wonderful from check in to housekeeping. It's the only place I ever stay when traveling to San Francisco. Nothing better compares to the service and price.

Have stayed at Hotel Carlton 4 times now, never disappointed . The beds are so comfy , great location super friendly staff. Johnny always willing to help. We had two bikes we brought for our daughter and they stored them for us in the basement until we could deliver them to her. I'm sorry I don't remember everyone's name but they are all great! And don't forget the wine reception in the evening. Great!

Room Tip: This is a personal boutique style hotel which I love. The rooms on higher level facing away from sut...

My kids (9 and 16) and I stayed at the Hotel Carlton this past weekend. This hotel was built in the 1920's and has been renovated and updated. We found the room to be very clean and nicely furnished. The staff (front desk and cleaning staff) were very warm and helpful, offering me very helpful advice when I asked, and I witnessed them patiently helping other clients with their needs. Our room was $116 and I was very satisfied with the value!

Yes, the room was small (that's how they built them in the 20's), and yes, the doors are thin and you can hear everything through them. However, since we had read that this was an issue, when I booked online I requested to be in as quiet a room possible. I was delighted to find that they had put us in a room that was on the opposite end from the elevator, and tucked at the end of a spur hallway, so we didn't hear people walking by and we were in a corner so only one neighboring room, instead of two. It might have been an issue of the neighbors in that one room were noisy, but they were not, and we had a lovely, quiet night. I think it could be rough to be near the elevator.

The neighborhood is on the edge of Nob Hill, so if you head uphill, toward Bush and Pine, it is fine, and was quite "happening" on a Friday night. If you head downhill, toward Post and Geary, it drops off into the Tenderloin, and is not so savory. But we felt fine in the neighborhood, even at night, because it was so busy.

The restaurant looked and smelled wonderful, but we had other plans for our meals. My daughter got hungry later and I ordered a pizza from the restaurant/bar next door, "Fly". It was fine, although I later saw an Italian place on Larkin, just around the corner and across the street that probably would have been much better.

We parked at the lot across the street, to save a few bucks (Hotel valet $35, other place $28), it offered in and out, and it was fine, but we had to wait for several cars to be moved to get ours out one time (8pm), but it was easy in the morning (11am). The people were super nice, but it was very crowded with a very steep single-lane driveway that is used for two way traffic, so twice I saw people heading in to have to back down it, into the street because another car was coming down. If you're not comfortable with that kind of scenario, you might go for the hotel valet for just a few more bucks.

Great value in the city, pretty good neighborhood, lovely staff (bring earplugs or earbuds/mp3 player if you're sensitive to noise like I am, or ask for a quiet room).

Room Tip: The rooms at the very back of the hall are probably quieter. We had 515 and it was great.

We did a 1 night stay at the Hotel Carlton last weekend, and it was so adorable, relaxed and we believe a truly incredible value. The entire staff were helpful, sincere and made sure all of our needs and wants were met. Walkable to just about everything in the downtown area, we were more than content to make the hotel our home for the night. We had a great view from the 8th floor, where the room was clean, bright and decorated in such a fun Moroccan/International/Modern way. Yes, it's right on the edge of the Tender/Nob, but I felt totally safe and fine...and i can be a wimp that way. Even at night, we had zero worries.
My husband went to breakfast at the restaurant downstairs and LOVED it. He said it was a totally interesting menu and delicious. (I went for a morning run that was out of this world gorgeous!)
One interesting aspect of the hotel is that it is probably the most seismically sound hotel in all of the city. We read that when the big earthquake hit in 1989, the Hotel Carlton only had 1 broken window....and that all of the seismic engineers that came to SF to do their work all stayed AT the Carlton...since the hotel is built upon some of the only bedrock in the city. Not that we were thinking about that a lot, but it didn't hurt our peace of mind.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a fun, affordable and welcoming place to stay in the city. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was quiet.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Carlton following a tour of the Canyonlands and Las Vegas and I can honestly say that this hotel was by far the friendliest and most accommodating of all the hotels we had stayed in. The front desk staff were so welcoming and could not have been more helpful in helping us to explore the city to make sure we made the most of our stay. It was a pleasure to come back to the hotel each day where we were able to sit in reception and enjoy the wine tasting and entertainment. Nothing was ever too much trouble for any of the staff. The rooms were comfortable, clean and well furnished. We would certainly have no hesitation in returning to this hotel. All the staff are a real credit to the hotel and should be congratulated for their excellent service.
