“Few minutes from Union Square and friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2013

I've spent 2 days in Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre hotel in San Francisco. The hotel is well-located, just a few minutes walking from Powel St. Staff were super friendly and efficient. The room was big, clean, very nice and comfortable. I think it is very good value for money.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody.

Room Tip: I have stayed in a room with king size bed and city view.

Unfortunately, I was expecting more from the hotel given the rating on tripadvisor. Unfortunately, I was sadly let down in terms of convenience and amenities. Yes, there was a wine happy hour, but I expect basic things like a hair-dryer and toiletries at a minimum. More than this, the walls of the hotel rooms were paper thin. People having a normal conversation in the next room over sounded as if they were right in the middle of my own room. I could even hear every little sound when someone was using in the bathroom next over. The noise issue was even worse with people in the hallway, and exponentially worse next to the closet for housekeeping when the housekeeper or someone was frequently shutting or slamming the door. I won't even mention the noise factor from outside the building which was tolerable given that it's in the city. It's unfortunate as I had high hopes given the overall rating of the hotel. I will say though that the décor and furniture had a nice ambience, but it certainly did not offset the noise factor. Cleanliness was also inconsistent (Bathroom tub had a scummy feel, and pillowcase had dark smudges). In addition, location was not the most central and was a good 10-15 minute walk to Union Square. I'd recommend staying elsewhere somewhere nearer to Union Station or Embarcadero...

While it's a pleasure to have been able to host your recent visit, and we're happy that our site and ambience were enjoyable elements of the stay, we apologize for any undue noise and shortcomings associated with your respective room. We aim to provide our guests with all your in-room essentials and more, and we certainly have these available to offer, including those toiletries referenced in your review. We'd love the opportunity to further discuss this visit and for the chance to host you again, and we hope that you'll consider reaching out to our team. With a variety of rooms at our disposal, we'd love to have you back and to identify a space that's better suited to your privacy and preferences. Thanks again for lending us your time and review; we hope to speak more with you soon.

I loved the decoration of the hotel, all Indian style. The room was very big and even had a walking closet. The service of all the staff is great, they are always willing to help with a smile. They also serve complementary wine in the evenings. The location is good, about 10-15 min walking from Union Square.

I stayed there for three nights with my husband and two young daughters. San Francisco hotels are very expensive, so I think this was a good choice, not terribly overpriced. The reception staff was very agreeable and kind, we felt welcome. I cannot say they could recommend many places, but they surely did their best to help us.
The room was definitely on the small side and the furniture seemed old, but it was clean and it had a wonderful extra space (sort of a walk-in closet) for all our things. I notice a lot of people complain about the noise, I did not find it so disturbing, you are pretty much next to the city center after all.
And this brings me to the single most important advantage of this hotel: location! Walking distance to the center, to the shops, to China town, to the Italian neighborhood, etc, etc. We only used the car to get to the Golden Gate Park and that was not so far either.
In conclusion, it might seem overpriced to people from Europe, but compared to the other hotels in San Francisco, I truly think this is a very good choice.

A very nice hotel close to the center of SF, a very amiable staff and a good restaurant. We were on the 7th floor and we heard some noise from the streets and from the hallway. It is the only and small inconvenient we can talk about.

Hotel decoration is ok but the hotel is a bit dark. We were first in a room in the 3rd floor which had a strong smell of damp. We couldn't sleep properly because of the noise outside and other hotel tenants. They moved us to another room which was cleaner and better (no damp smell) but we couldn't sleep cause of other hotel tenants (loud laugh, shouting mainly drunk people) so we came up with understanding that low class people come to this hotel and the walls are like paper.
Location is not too bad but walking from the hotel to union square was about 15 mins which is ok but the area around the hotel is dirty and bad. Wasn't feeling very safe to walk over there.

I don't think I'll stay in this hotel again.

If u have choice and time to search for a proper hotel go to one of the hotels in union square, it's a nice lively clean area.

We're thankful to have had you as our guests, and we thank you for taking the time to share your experience and concerns with us. Providing an exemplary guest experience is at the forefront of our operations, and we're disheartened to hear that, in spite of your room change, you were disturbed by neighboring guests. This is certainly atypical for our property. We'd welcome the opportunity to discuss your visit more, and we encourage you to reach out to our management team to discuss any lingering concerns you might have. Many thanks again for your time and review; we hope to hear more from you soon.

Staff: the guys at the reception were phenomenal (I say guys since we only dealt with men during our stay). We were greeted by Theo who had a great smile and a fantastic sense of humour from the get go. We were able to leave our bags since we were too early for checkin. They provided us with a map and suggested some restaurants in the area according to our food preferences. They also have free wine tasting in the lobby, with live entertainment. We saw "Snazz" on the keyboard and a local student string quartet. Very nice ambiance.

Room: We decided to get a room with 2 double beds rather than one king for the difference in price. The bed was relatively comfortable, depending on what side of the mattress you were on. But if you have the bed to yourself, you can move as much as you like to find a good spot. The room was a bit tight but still comfortable. The view was alright but we didn't spend much time looking out the window. We were on the 4th floor. At night, it sort of felt like an old creaky house, which has its charm. The walls were a little thin so sometimes you could hear other conversations or toilets flushing in the other rooms.

Bathroom: It was a bit dingy (maybe a few tiles need replacing) but still very clean. We decided to reuse our towels. But when we would get back to our room at night, the towels we had used would be refolded and sometimes there would be extra ones. So it could be hard to tell which ones were clean and which ones not.

Wifi: free service was appreciated but not necessarily that fast.

Location: Well located. We sometimes walked or drove to our destinations and it was easy from here. At night (past 10:30-11) it can get a little "sketchy", i.e. there are pretty ladies on the corner. They don't bother anyone though. During the day, it's fine.

Valet: We didn't use their service. Free parking is available on the street but you have to read the signs carefully. Also, if you plan on using a parking lot (which can sometimes be cheaper than the hotel) beware of "changing" prices due to whether the lot is busy or not.

Overall: We had a great stay. We were there for 6 nights and it was worth it. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: It was cheaper to get a room with 2 double beds than one with a king. That way you can share a bed...
