“Nice hotel - centrally located”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

This is a nice hotel, very clean, friendly staff that was helpful in telling me at check in to leave the car in the garage! The hotel is centrally located, with public transportation available. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet and had a small town feel. It is within walking distance to Japan Town. We were there for 4 days and I was traveling with a 17 year old who liked the hotel decor and shopping at the Japan Town Mall and eating sushi.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony. Weather in San Francisco is nice in the evening and we would have en...

Hotel Tomo is the middle of Japantown and, thus, puts you smack dab in the middle of San Francisco. It's not a heavily touristed area and the many neighborhoods within walking distance all contain great local shops and fantastic eateries. For aggressive walkers like myself, Golden Gate Park is within easy reach.

The hotel itself is almost hidden. I didn't see it on my first pass going uphill on Sutter, but coming back downhill it was quite easy to spot. The hotel has underground parking, but it is costly ($30/day). Motorcyclists, however, can park for free if they can find room to park the bike without taking a car space.

Like most (or all) Joie de Vivre hotels, Tomo is a refurbished older hotel. I've stayed at several Joie de Vivre properties over the years and I'd rank Tomo in the lower middle with respect to quality and service. Everything was just comfortable enough and the staff was just friendly enough to not make me regret spending my money here. But there's a thin line between satisfaction and regret, and Tomo teeters on it.

My room was on the 4th floor facing the street. I'm not a good city sleeper and I was a little worried, but it was actually very quiet (for a big city) after 10PM. Not quiet enough to leave the windows open, though.

The furnishings are fine in a Ikea-cum-Tokyo sort of way. The beds are comfortable with a generous number of good pillows. The bathroom was strictly functional. Complimentary Keurig coffee makers are in the rooms, a nice plus.

The attached restaurant served a pretty good bowl of udon and rice balls for breakfast.

Overall, I think I prefer the nearby and only slightly more expensive Hotel Kabuki (also a JdV hotel) to Tomo, but Tomo is still a comfortable hotel in a great location.

Room Tip: The higher, the better.

The hotel is in a very good neiborough with the bus stop on front of the entrance. Rooms are spacious but you can easily hear the loud outside of the street. The gym is easy and not really furnished but still. That japan style is only on the hotel pictures and it does not really have the feeling they are addressing.

Conveniently located in a quieter area of town (Japan Town) but still easily accessible to the tourist spots. The rooms are large, comfortable, clean, and recently redone in a clear wood modern style.
The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Breakfast is not included and can be expensive. (It is in the separate restaurant on the 1st floor.) A good point is that the restaurant is open from 7am to 10 pm.

Room Tip: An upper room will give you a nice view.

This is a charming hotel, not only because of the decor, but because of the staff. The staff under Gill Eklof's personal leadership is friendly, accommodating and attentive. We arrvied quite late in the evening and were welcomed and checked in without a hitch. There were some minor problems with the room which were promptly dealt with. In any hotel, whether five or one star, you will encounter some flaws. The real test of a hotel is how the staff responds. Here, the GM took a personal interest in the problem, the outcome and kept us informed all the way. The restaurant was a great place to start the day with breakfast. I have read other reviews the parking lot is problematic but the truth is you're parking a car in a big city and any lot will be limited. We had absolutely no problem finding a space in the lot whether in the afternoon or late evening. We enjoyed staying at this hotel and will stay there again.

Room Tip: Call ahead if you are planning to use a car and need to park it in the lot.

We stayed in this hotel on our first stop of our California tour.

At our arrival, which was quite late as our plane had been delayed, we were welcomed nicely at the front desk and were provided by a lot of useful information on San Francisco for the days to come.

Our room on the 8th floor, was spacious and clean and with a very comfortable bed. The TV was also very nice.

The only setback were the simple glazed windows, which didn’t matter so much because we were so high up.
However, the walls of the rooms are also quite thin, so when you are in bed and your neighbour is watching TV loudly, you WILL definitely hear it.

Nevertheless it was rather quiet, which was very welcomed after a day touring in the city. “Japan-Town” is a very nice and clean neighbourhood, with a variety of Japanese restaurants and shops nearby.

It is quite simple to get downtown, as a bus station is practically in front of the hotel.

One piece of advice: If you can avoid to use a car in San Francisco, do it! Mass transit works great in SF and parking at hotels is very expensive, this one being no exception. As this was our first stop, we only rented one once we left the city…

Compared to the general price level in SF, you get good value for your money.

All in all, we would recommend this place if you are staying in SF.

Room Tip: Take a room on a higher floor. The view is great and the noise is minimal.

Thanks for being a guest of Hotel Tomo and for taking the opportunity to share such thoughtful feedback with us. It's a pleasure to host first time guests, and we're happy to hear that the warm reception of our front desk set the stage for a pleasant visit. That said, we will certainly look into your concerns regarding undue volume from neighbors, and we will do all we can to alleviate this in the future. It would be our extreme pleasure to host you again, and we hope that you'll reach out as you plan return trips to the area. Many thanks again for your time and review.

This is the third time I've stayed at Hotel Tomo. It was an excellent experience. I was greeted with two small bottles of wine in my room and the Japanese breakfast in the restaurant was, as usual, outstanding. While my friend napped, I walked over to Japan Town and enjoyed looking in the various shops. Highly recommend this hotel!
