“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

I had a 1st round interview for a job in San Francisco. I had read about Tomo in an issue of Wired Magazine, and I decided to stay there for my trip.

The hotel itself is great. The location is good - It's right across the street from the main Japantown plaza, and the immediate surrounding areas are nice. The area is safe, and quiet at night.

The staff was extremely helpful, helping me find my way to my interview, and setting up transport to the airport.

The room was also great. The main draw of the hotel - the pop art/manga inspired murals in the rooms - added immensly to the experience. The bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet and comfortable. The iPod dock radio was a nice touch. Also, the hotel has a copy of the Teachings of Buddha next to the Gideon's Bible, which just adds to the unique charm of the hotel.

Finally, the hotel is a good deal - it's far less expensive than many San Francisco hotels, and close enough to the main attractions of the city to be worth it.

We stayed at the Tomo Hotel ten days ago and and last night before departing. We were very pleased with the service, location, and comfort of the hotel and most definitely will try to book it on our next visit to San Francisco.
We asked for a room in the upper section of the building and were given a comfortable and quiet room on the seventh floor. The people at the reception were most helpful and cordial. You may be put off by the decor "à la Japonaise moderne" but soon it may become an acquired taste.

Our room was located on the 5th floor and it was clean and comfortable. We were next to a sleep disorder room. The TV was great and the view from the balcony was limited but great anyway. Next to the elevators, are glass windows that give you a panoramic view of Japantown. The staff was very friendly and helpful. You have got to eat at Mum's Restaurant. The staff in the restaurant were great!!! The two men in the morning who wait on you are friendly and funny! They also do take out if you want to eat in your room. They open at 7:30AM. You cannot miss the Shabu Shabu in the evening and all you can eat rib eye steak! The two ladies who wait and serve you are great too! If you look on the walls, the staff have professional pictures of themselves. It reflects a fun and friendly atmosphere. You are also in walking distance of many businesses and also the east and west mall. Directly across the street from the hotel, you have a little grocery store and on the other side of the street, there is a little shop that has fresh mochi. Simply the best mochi we have tasted ever!!! If you arrive late at night and are hungry, many pizza places deliver to the hotel until the early morning hours. They gave me brochures and I called Pronto Pizza and Pizza Zone and Grill for late night dinners. No more than 1 hour delivery time. The Pizza was good.
For those who are looking for a exceptional place to eat outside of the hotel, I must recommend Kushi Tsuru. I give them 5 stars. They are located in the West Mall I believe. Its a 5 minute walk to the East/West Malls and may I add, a very peaceful walk. Kushi Tsuru is absolutely great! I had the beef teppan and the shoyu ramen. ( I ate there more than once ). The friendly lady greeted us the first night and the second night, she remembered my family and what we ordered. Also dont worry about personal items and stuff because in the East Mall, there is a $1.50 store. Everything in there is $1.50 or if priced higher, the higher price. They have almost everything in that store. When it was really cold, I went to the store and they had beanies and gloves for $1.00 each. You have to check the store out and plan to spend around 30 minutes to 1 hour in there because that's how much items they have.

SFO in the summertime. Great time to visit the City. Will be very crowded no matter what days you go. Will likely still be foggy and cold at some point. Hotels are expensive and quickly sell out.

I have a family with three young kids so add to the equation finding one room that suits a family of 5 it's even more challenging to find value, style and location. But, I grew up in the Bay Area and although we don't live there anymore, I try to take my boys to a baseball game once a year. So, if you're a family looking for a hotel in San Francisco then hopefully this review helps you.

VALUE: Unless it's winter, Priceline doesn't do much for saving you money on a hotel in San Francisco. I did a lot of due diligence (kayak, trip advisor, booking.com, hotel.com, etc.) and ended up getting the best rates straight off of the hotel websites. And many reviewers of Hotel Tomo! suggest calling up to get an even better rate. In any case, make sure that you read the fine print concerning the children's' policy for any hotel you're looking at. Many hotels in SFO charge extra per child or simply don't allow them (inconvenient little creatures...kidding). Hotel Tomo! does not charge for kids (maybe up to two children, I can't remember). Also, many hotels note that there is no room for cribs or roll-aways (real estate is tight in SFO = small rooms). Check that too before you book a room and plan on bringing your baby or toddler!

ROOMS: Another BIG difference I found in SFO hotels are that rooms with 'two beds' are usually twin or double beds. Hotel Tomo! offers rooms with two queen sized beds (makes a big difference when having your kids sleep in one bed). So, the room is large enough for two queens, a desk, a tub and a nice little balcony (request this) to take in beautiful views of the city from.

SERVICE: The concierge was very friendly and even gave the kids welcome bags of Japanese-pop toys and candies. In the room was a hand written welcome note addressed to me as well as a bottle of Perrier and a tin of chocolates (no we didn't get charged for opening them). Later that day, the front desk was very helpful in showing us which bus route (or cable car) to take to At&t Park to catch the game that night. He gave us a map and marked it up for us. All in all, you couldn't ask for nicer concierge, really.

LOCATION: Japantown is so peaceful and pretty. Definitely family friendly from that aspect. Wide, uncrowded sidewalks and the Japan Center plaza right there to check out shops and let the kids explore a little (get Mochi at the corner candy shop). Oh, and checkout is 12pm which is two hours later than a lot of hotels I found in the city so you can walk to breakfast near Fillmore St. at Sweet Maple. Lastly, we had a car but like to get around the city on public transportation (good experience for the kids)...so we parked the car at the hotel ($29/day) and started a combo of walking/cable cars/buses/MUNI. We didn't end up saving any money from just driving and parking at the game for $20 but we did get to explore more. And, bus #38 is the bus that comes straight back from Geary St. down by Union Square near the Powell stop. So, whatever you're doing in SFO, just get back to Powell (main stop) and you can easily catch a bus back to Hotel Tomo! for a couple bucks.

Alright, that's way too much info. Why do we volunteer all this time on TA? I don't know... I guess because traveling is so valuable and other TA reviews have helped us so much. Hope this helps families going to San Francisco!

Room Tip: Request a room with a balcony!

we had a nice stay in a clean room. the beds made a good sleep. as a 4 person family we had enough space for us and the bags. the service helped out with problems on the safe and TV very fast.
the breakfast was ok, but we had better places to eat. . the service in the restaurant a little bit slow but it was clean.

over all we had a very good stay

Room Tip: balcony rooms give a nice view.

Stayed here in July 2013 and I enjoyed my stay.

The rooms were nice and I enjoyed the theme. My eldest daughter is into anime so it clicked with her especially. The rooms had a good amount of space, a frig and a Keurig coffee maker that got alot of use. Free wifi was welcome.

Staff was helpful and polite. No complaints or issues here.

Location - Quiet, out of the way part of town. We did go explore the Japanese malls and shops which was fun. In addition, there is a good amount of restaurants close by with other cuisine options. We were able to get around easily via buses and never used our car in the city.

My only complaint was the shower faucet was broken and required some practice in getting it to work correctly. There was a little noise from the hallway traffic but nothing non-routine. The nearby school was detectible but if wasn't a concern for us.
