“Quirky”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Part of our wedding party stayed here for my sisters wedding.
Not what I expected at a Best Western!
The decor is quirky, kind of old fashioned with each room having the name of a historical figure on the room, which i thought was fun.
There are also fireplaces in some of the rooms! SO fun.
Otherwise this is basic Best Western.
Keep in mind that while this area is not unsafe it IS in the tenderloin and if you walk too far in one direction, things can be a bit sketchy or uncomfrotable for some people. Otherwise it is a quick walk or taxi ride to downtown area.

Room Tip: Get a fireplace room

Dear Jesikitty,

We certainly appreciate that you took the time to share your review about your recent stay with us and the Trip Advisor community. I am pleased that you enjoyed our accommodations, especially with one of our fireplace rooms which can certainly make for a warm and cozy evening! Our neighborhood of SoMA (South of Market) area is an eclectic and diverse area which contributes to the overall makeup of the city of San Francisco and provides convenient access to all points within the city. Although not necessarily the most luxurious part of town, SoMA is continually thriving with planned restaurant openings as well as major corporations moving into our neighborhood.

We hope to welcome you back on your next trip to San Francisco, thanks again!

We stayed my birthday week. This is the nicest hotel i have ever stayed. Staff courteous and helpful; rooms beautiful and spacious; good location for everything (nothing more than 3 miles from here). The decor is artistic and kind of art deco. Only coffee and muffins complimentary. Gym across the street which guests can use if present their room key. Noise is minimal. Would only stay at this hotel when i return to SF.

Room Tip: ask for room not facing street

On the site there is written they have continental breakfast but they give you a coupon to use in a little caffè where you have a little choice or, if you want, you can go to take a burger (at 9.00 am) on the other side of the street....
Every time they try to sell you bus tickets and tours
No good restaurants nearby and, unfortunately, a lot of homeless in the evening.

Dear ValerioVF,

Thank you for providing your view of our hotel and neighborhood. We apologize that our breakfast did not meet your expectations. The impression of our neighborhood can be quite surprising to some visitors but the south of market neighborhood is filled with a diverse group of locals which include families and singles alike.

To maintain our standards of customer service we continue to strive to provide all of our guests a well informed and enjoyable visit to San Francisco by providing everyone the aforementioned type of information. One of the hottest and most progressive restaurant in San Francisco is located less than a block from the hotel with many more a couple of blocks away.

Hopefully you will return and provide us a second opportunity to explore our ever changing neighborhood. Perhaps your future stay in San Francisco's south of market district will be more to your liking. Thank you again for your time and response.

Kind regards,
Don Ignacio

The rooms were bigger than expected and they were decorated nicely. Both of which we appreciated. The shower was big enough for my 6'4" which can be a problem in a lot of hotels. Our room had a safe which I find convenient, though it seemed like someone had tried to break into it once before. It's central with good walking distance to bars, restaurants, and the shopping mall. San Francisco's compactness makes cab fares cheap, which is good in the evening or at night.

On the downside the area the hotel is located in is not the best. There are plenty of sketchy and homeless people when walking around. Other than the fact that it can be a bit uncomfortable we never had any problems with it. And there were also usually plenty police men/cars around the SoMA neighborhood.

The staff was mostly very friendly and helpful, with the exception of one guy who seemed really indifferent regarding our problem. I missed having a fridge in the room. But it was not a big problem.

Our biggest annoyance was the so called high speed internet. It was extremely unstable and slow. We had trouble connecting to the hotspot on all our devices (iPad, iPhone, Android phone, android tablets and computers). And even when connected we would some times get thrown off the wifi, and even when it worked it was EXTREMELY slow. I am not sure if this is problem they always have. But if it is, and if you need internet access you might just need to find another place to stay.

Dear MarkusAJ,

We certainly appreciate that you took the time to share your review about your recent stay with us and the Trip Advisor community. I am pleased that you enjoyed our accommodations. Regarding our HSIA, our IT Manager has currently been working on improving the wifi signal throughout the hotel to insure there are no dead spots to be found, we apologize for that inconvenience. Regarding our little neighborhood of SoMA (South of Market) it is slightly off the beaten path and rich in diversity, but so many improvements are underway with new cafes and restaurants planned to open up as well as our new corporate neighbors including Twitter, Dolby and Pintrest. We are certainly glad that you had an overall pleasant visit to San Francisco and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back!

Was a little concerned after reading other reviews but we had no problems with this hotel.

We would normall stay at 4 star hotels however the week we were in San Fran there were extra events on that pushed all accomodation prices up.

We are a family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 children.

Good walking distance to the mall and other central locations less than 10 mins. Rooms were clean and reasonable size.

Reception was helpful and friendly. We used the pool at the Best Western across the road.

The only thing that was missing for us was a fridge but this may be just this standard of accomodation.

Yes there were homeless people around but we did move around the central city and this is San Francisco not just the locat ion of this hotel. This is very sad and it was an humbling experience for us and the children.

We did not experience any noise from our room and we were there on a Friday night. Beds were comfortable

The room is huge and nicely decorated. The bed was very comfy. The rooms all had a name of a famous person from San Francisco. On the table inside, an old fashioned typewriter had a typed paper all about that person. There was a confusion on if and where we get a complimentary breakfast. Apparently, you only get one if you bought a certain package? Most of the staff were helpful and friendly, except the woman who checked us in was like a robot. The registration room was very small.

Stayed here for 5 nights towards the end of August, as I was attending a conference at the Moscone Center.

The hotel was excellent, and very comfortable. Rooms were clean and well equipped. I only had limited dealing with the reception staff but they were friendly and helpful each time. And it was only a 10 minute walk to the Moscone Center.

My only two grievences were that the windows are single pane and subsequently you hear everything outside (you will need ear plugs unless you are a heavy / deep sleeper!) - and that the area is pretty intimidating. I suppose I did just get used to it after a few days and did find that the best route back from Moscone was along Howard Street and then up 7th to the hotel. But a number of times in the evening I would glance down side streets and see gangs hanging out, or have to navigate around homeless folks in the street. In all fairness we had no incidents in the 5 days we were at the hotel - we never bothered the people in the street and they never bothered us, but as I say, it was pretty intimidating and I was quite relieved to checkout at the end of our stay.

If this bothers you, factor in the costs of taking a cab back to the hotel every night in your holiday budget!

Dear UKchicane,

We certainly appreciate that you took the time to share your review about your recent stay with us and the Trip Advisor community. I am glad to hear that overall, you enjoyed the accommodations and service provided by our staff.

Thank you also for providing tips to our future guests about the best route to take to/from Moscone Center. Walking down one block on 7th Street and then east on Howard Street is the easiest, fastest and the best path on foot to Moscone Center, AMC Metreon, Yerba Buena Gardens and the rest of the sights of our neighborhood SoMA, South of Market.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on your next visit to San Francisco!
