“Nice room, Bad service!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2012

My trip got off to a rocky start. The flight was delayed, I had a 45 minute wait for my shuttle. And while I was waiting for my airport shuttle, all I could think was how nice and comfy my room would be when I finally arrived.

Well Yes the room was nice, comfy, and beautiful. But check-in was a bit of a hassle. When I booked my room I assumed it was 100% paid for. The email that I printed said "Charged $507". I guess I needed to read between the lines. So when I checked in the guy asked for a credit card to charge the full payment and a deposit. I told him about the email and I said

Room Tip: book well in advance and look for deals on their website if you are staying for more than 2 days

I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Carriage Inn - San Francisco May 11 but I have read that theere have been some renovations done since then. i thought it was a great hotel, the rooms are very interesting and each has a theme so a little different. There is no restaurant and breakfast is minimal but there are places to eat nearby so no big deal. Advantages are the cost, very close to Union Square and the cable car and it has a carpark underneath which was handy as I had a hire car. The staff were friendly and the place was clean. Room had a great bathroom and all the facilities you need.

I used the Best Western chain many times during a driving trip through California and Nevada. I found them always to be good quality and reasonably priced. Most had laundry facilites which was handy. Breakfast normally included. Basic but all you need.

Attended MacWorld last week & spent 4 nights here. We chose it for the walking distance to the Moscone center and on site parking (and price). The room (Ken Keesey) was quite large so that was nice for a long stay. Very clean and nicely appointed, good bed. Service was friendly and helpful. Wished for more ice machines! Neighborhood has some troubled folks and such but we expected that. Wifi was good but you have to keep logging in :-(

All in all fit our needs and budget.

3.5 stars..
pros: they provide a small continental breakfast in the morning, which was nice. had some pretty good muffins.. i stayed in the room called "big bertha". rooms are nicely decorated and staff are very friendly.
parking is only $20 which is good, cuz most hotels in San Fran area are minimum $40

cons: hotel is rather small so not many ammenities.. supposedly there's a pool at the best western across the street that you can see, but its is a little annoying to have to walk across the street. hotel is located in a slightly shady area. be careful when walking home at night. there are a lot of homeless ppl and drunks around the area late at night. i walked back to the hotel with 2 friends around 12:30am from union square and the walk was not the safest. wifi at the hotel is free, but doesn't work most of time.. was incredibly slow when it worked, and half the time would only work for like 15 mins at a time.

would be 4 stars if located in a better area, had better internet

Nicely appointed rooms for the price - nice and close to Market Street. Didn't eat here so can't comment - plenty of food places in the surrounding blocks though.

This is NOT your father's Best Western......but then again, we ARE talking 7th & Mission in "bawdy yet refined" San Francisco!
So just be ready for a dose of eccentric and eclectic trappings in the edgy east end of SoMa, and you should be happy here.....especially at this price point.

The hotel is just 48 rooms, with no expansive lobby nor restaurant/bar on-site. There is a burger joint at the sister BW Americana property across the street, which I presume had a pub too....but frankly with the tons of great options in this great city, we didn't bother. TIP: we ate supper just steps around the corner at "AQ" -- my wife had monkfish with fennel sausage and peppers, and I had the cobia draped in black garlic with lemon spinach puree.....both very fine with such an eclectic mix of flavors and excellent service at reasonable tarriff too.

Back to the hotel and the eccentric vibe....we were in a themed "suite" named after Abe Warner, a notorious Barbary Coast publican who operated the infamous "Cobweb Palace" where hot toddies of boiling whiskey, gin, and cloves were the rage more than 150 years ago. This second floor room was large-- listed at more than 340 sf with 9' ceilings and operable bay windows-- and the bathroom carve-out included plenty of vanity and open space. There was a desk with a couple chairs, loveseat, bench seat, and countertop area as well to make coffee, although we took advantage of the complimentary java and muffins in the lobby every morning.

Furnishings were period pieces with chenille and velvet, and decor was enhanced by mirrors and paisely wall coverings, plus a historic typewriter with a clever muse from the aforementioned Mr. Warner-- yet another eccentric touch! Closet was ample and included a safe. King Bed was comfortable albeit pillows were so-so. Housekeeping and cleanliness were both excellent. The parking garage is a bonus too....at a very reasonable $20 per night with self-service and easy in/out access, it was perfect as we had a car toward the end of the stay.

Demerits: only three half-dresser drawers-- the other three halve-drawers are faux for refrigerator storage that was not in the room anyways; the flat screen was small; the toilet had a cycling float-valve that ran every couple minutes or so; and the heating unit sounded like a small chopper, and had poor temperature control with a sliding relic for a thermostat that simply did not keep the room at a comfortable level. The WiFI was also horrendous.....very slow and constantly kicking out.

Bottom-Line: this will work for you if you aren't looking for resort amenities and state-of-the-art business travel accoutrements. Yes the neighborhood is edgy, so frailing seniors, nervous types, or folks with children could feel antsy.....but others with seasoned travel experience on a prudent budget should like it. TIP: try SFCVB search engine to get a "free nite" deal and reduced rates.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

I stayed at this nicely-renovated older building in early November, 2011. I wanted a place that was within walking distance of the War Memorial Opera House, but that also had on-site parking. The concept of the newly-decorated rooms is to name each after a locally-famous personality and to decorate each room in a different manner to reflect on that person. My comfortable single room, on the top (4th) floor was named after Patty Hearst. There was a comfortable king bed, a large flatscreen TV, sofa, and a nicely-furnished bath.
There is a self-park enclosed garage within the hotel, and although not advertised, free coffee and muffins in the morning in the lobby area. I felt that the price was quite reasonable for a downtown hotel and I will return on other occasions.
