“Perfectly serviceable hotel, great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This is a great hotel to choose in San Francisco. All rooms under $300-$400 will be small. This hotel is no different. What was different was the large bathroom with a huge shower. Some amenities are lacking (no glasses?), but dollar-for-dollar, this is the best stay I've had in the City. Keep in mind that downtown isn't quiet; if you want a quiet room, don't stay in downtown San Francisco. Even higher floors can have a lot of street noise, especially if the construction on Stockton for the subway is still going on. The bar is also top notch. My only quibble is the damn elevator. One old-school elevator, possibly the slowest in the Western Hemisphere. Just use a little patience and you'll be good. Great staff too. Highly rated, especially for couples or single travelers.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in August. Pre-payed online in advance for a special rate. When we checked in there were only two rooms available that were both terribly located within the hotel. Be cautious when booking rooms that face the back of the hotel. The 3rd floor is the ground level and those rooms are at eye level with the dumpsters out back. Garbage pick up is at 6 am every morning and the noise is very unpleasant to wake up to. Also, there are homeless people sorting through those dumpsters all day. There is no AC in the room and the window needs to remain open for any sort of air circulation. I literally pulled the curtain open in one room and a homeless person was standing at eye level with me and apologized for going through trash at my window. I explained to the front desk that the room was unacceptable and they told me they had only one other available room facing the same direction but 1 floor higher. That room had a bathroom which was poorly vented and smelled like mold and urine. Again, the room faces the garbage dumpsters. The front desk was unapologetic and offered me no alternative. They didn't even give me the option to leave with a full refund which was unacceptable. I picked the room 1 floor higher and kept a bottle of fabreeze in the bathroom to freshen it up.

On the positive side, the room were nice and modern but very small. Double beds which is small for a couple. Breakfast was continental and very good. Location was great! I think that if you book directly with the hotel and tell them that you want a room 4th floor and up and facing the front of the hotel your experience may be far better then mine. The two bad rooms were 309 (directly at eye level with dumpster) 415 (no bathroom ventilation and still backs on to dumpster).

We stayed at the Mystic hotel for 2 nights early August and as soon as we arrived they were kind enough to upgrade our room at no extra cost. The rooms are very clean and of decent size.
The breakfast and service was excellent

I stayed at this hotel for 6 nights. It is a great value! The rooms are clean, a bit small, but I did not have any major complaints except for the noise.
I heard the garbage trucks and the street noise everyday. My friends stayed on a higher level room and they did not have any noise.
The location is great! Walking distance from pretty much everything which I loved.
I would probably stay here again.

Reception staff very polite and very helpful, Stacey very helpful indeed with directions and rolling straight into a conversation as if knowing you as an old friend.
The room we stayed in was very relaxing, not much of a view, but very nice with the fan, bathroom old style as well with the sink.
The bar had a nice old style about it, i didnt have a drink in it though as im a pints man, and no taps there, bit a nice relaxing atmosphere all the same.
Could have 2 lifts as the one is certainly worked.
i didnt really notice that the car parking is added on when i reviewed the hotel first and only found out when i landed at the reception, thought being a hotel that they would have there own parking, but they dont.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013 via mobile

I spent 3 nights in (the apparently dreaded) Room 315 at the beginning of August. I do stay regularly in places like the Sheraton hotels so I was a bit worried based on the reviews.
The room itself was clean, functional & comfortable as long as you don't want to have a decent view out of the window (which I didn't). The view are as per the photos on TA, of back alleys, but I felt very safe with the bars on the windows & blinds that blocked out everything - & I was staying there on my own as a single female traveller. There was a bit of noise around 2am, for about 5 seconds, and I didn't hear any garbage trucks as reported previously. The staff were very helpful and the hotel location is outstanding!
Of note is the restaurant & bar. The food & drinks were excellent although not cheap, & a great environment to be in at night. In the morning breakfast was adequate - again appropriate for the price.
Are there more upmarket hotels in SFO - yes. Would I stay at the Mystic again - yes, definitely.Does this place have a certain charm - for sure. Thanks to all at Mystic for a good stay!

I want to start by saying that for $150/night I don't expect luxury but I do expect my bed made every day and new soap, at least when one is running out! Obviously this was not what we got. Our room was spacious, the bathroom was very good and big, the bed was comfortable, and our view of the parking garage in front was not great but it had its charm. The location is very good- just 4 blocks from the Powell Street BART station and 2 blocks from Union Square. There is great shopping around and everything touristy is pretty close by on a cab, bus or even walking distance. The breakfasts were above average (pastries, boiled eggs, cereal, OJ and coffee with jams and nutella). The staff was friend to some, not so friendly to others, but overall adequate.
However, I do not appreciate getting back to our hotel room at 11pm and our beds not being made (even though we never places a Do Not Disturb sign). It seems they do this often since this happened to my friends who stayed the same days. My friends stayed at the 5th floor and suffered from the daily garbage trucks that woke them up every day around 5am. My noise issues I can't blame the hotel for: inconsiderate neighbors. Our room, however, did not have tissues, only had the small mirror in the bathroom, and we only got soap after having to ask for it after our 5th day. I'm not sure I'd go back, but I might since it did meet its purpose: affordable and convenient.

Room Tip: seventh floor did not seem to suffer from gargage noises
