“A loud place to stay - but very central”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

Great location and great price and the room was old fashioned but awesome.

However our room seemed to be nearest a club as every night we stayed there was thumping bass music playing from 10.30pm - 4pm so had to purchase ear plugs. Also staff obviously hated their job as they were really moody.

What we like are
Location of this hotel is close to Union Square. With this affordable price, it bangs for your buck.
Room condition for the room at the back of the hotel.
Several restaurants, groceries, car rental are near to this hotel.

What we don't like are
Wi-Fi

Room Tip: Try to get the room that is far away from the road. I guess the room at the back of the hotel. It...

Do not even think of staying at this place. We were enticed by the price, but guess what? You get (or do not get) what you pay for!!! It was a dirty room, with ceiling light fixtures missing covers, wallpaper peeling, one light on the nightstand was not even working, wood working around windows crumbling, and a smell of Lysol permeating the room. We walked out and lost our money, but could not stand to sleep there!!!!!!

Room Tip: DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not one of the rooms could possibly be decent!!!!!!!!

The staff were friendly, and the room clean.

That's pretty much where the good stuff ends.

It's on the edge of Tenderloin (not a great area), and doesn't feel particularly safe. It's on a very noisy street, and the windows aren't double glazed. The electricity sockets in my room were actually falling out of the wall. The switch on the (one) bedside lamp was broken, so I had to turn it on/off by unscrewing the bulb. The bath/shower tap didn't turn far enough to get properly water. The speed of the wifi was completely hopeless. The decor was fairly old fashioned, with an ancient crt tv (not something I particularly care about, but some might). There was no safe in the room, leaving one with the dilemma of whether or not to risk leaving anything valuable behind.

The location is good if you really want to be near Union Sq - but it's a total tourist trap and a horrible area.

Honestly, I'd give this one a miss.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

This is an older hotel, but very clean and neat. The day staff, Sid, was extremely helpful. The room can get street noise but wearing ear plugs at night really helps. The hotel is right in the heart of the city, so it's close to everything. There is no air conditioning and a few other things, but we didn't miss it. If you want a nice hotel for a very good price, you can't beat this.

Ok, first of all.., this is not like the Hilton or Nikko, but guess what....Its right there in the same convenient location at a small fraction of the pruce! I like these old hotels... grand winding staircase...aoartmenr style rooms with large step in closet and the private bath is down a short hall. This 100 yr old hotel is surrounded by great small restaurants and is close to mass transit and cable car! We took a double queen. The beds were not deluxe but we were comfy enough. The noise was bad.... we were there for the historically HOT days....so I had to open the crank open windows (no a/c) and the traffic noise and loud talking were bad. The desk clerk told me that they will be replacing these old windows with double pane glass, before the end of the year, which will reaaly cut down the noise. I like this hotel and think its a great option in San Francisco. It is not for trsvelrrs who want to be pampered.

Room Tip: Two queen rooms are all on the noisy street. Inside rooms may not be as noisy except when the rubbis...
