I just finished a 3 night stay at this hotel with my husband and two children. We reserved a double, double room despite knowing we do not like double beds. Usually we will not stay at a hotel that does not have queen bed rooms. However, the last few Kimpton hotels I stayed at were great so I thought we could compromise. If you are a single traveler then this isa perfect, safe hotel to stay in near the city. If you are a couple, it would also be acceptable space.
The room had the two double beds and a bathroom with a sliding door. You could touch the sliding door into the bathroom from one of the beds. Whoever sleeps on the bed next to the bathroom needs to be a light sleeper. If anyone in the family gets up to use the restroom they are walking right in front of you and then pushing open a loud sliding door and using the bathroom. The bathroom was also very small. I'm pretty sure the rim on the toilet touched the shower. I also did not find the beds to be very comfortable. Another issue was the quality of the towels and toiletries.
I gave this hotel 3 stars. It will do…. 80% of the staff we encountered were wonderful, kind people with a genuine interest to ensure we had a great stay.
The hotel was in a perfect location. It was one block from great shopping, a short walk to China Town and less than mile from the Ferry Building. We did take a cab to get to Alcatraz ($14) since we were running late and saw it would be about a 35 minute walk. Fisherman's Wharf would be about 3 miles and in the cold you would probably want to take a cab. However, you will never find cabs waiting outside The Palomar. I suggest walking across the street to the Hyatt, walking int he lobby and then coming out to stand in their taxi line. They always have many taxis waiting at the Hyatt. The one time we tried to use the nice gentleman at the Palomar to help us get a cab, we waited about ten minutes and then decided to walk over to the Hyatt.
The Fifth Floor restaurant was so-so. We ate breakfast there each morning our of convenience but there were so many good pastry shops just steps away outside.
Noise? Some reviewers have talked about the noise. There was a drummer on the corner one night but he eventually left. We were on the 7th floor. I don't really believe noise is an issue at this hotel.
I would agree with other reviewers that commented on the dated furniture and carpet yet I would also note it was CLEAN and dated. Housekeeping does a good job keeping the rooms clean.
Would I stay again? hmmm… I would investigate some comparable option and keep checking to see if they fix the double bed, sliding bathroom door issue. Or, maybe they should install a fan in the bathrooms to at least muffle the noise of someone going to the bathroom since it is right next to the bed.
Highest floor is floor 8.

Thanks for the praise of the team and location. I also appreciated your note about our housekeepers cleanliness. I do hope you will come back and try us again (feel free to reach out to me directly). We have some exciting changes ahead, including new guest room furniture and artwork, as well as enhancements to the public space of the building. I have been working closely with the designers and their plans are impressive. Changes will start taking place as early as January 2014
