“Surprisingly nice!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

What a nice hotel! This was our first time staying at a Best Western and, frankly, did so with hesitation. We needed have no worries. The room was very nice and the location was perfect. We had reserved a room with a king bed and a pull-out sofa. The only drawback was that when the sofa was pulled out, there was no way for the person sleeping on that side of the bed to exit except to crawl out the bottom of the bed. So the room wasn't spacious, but it was nicely appointed and the bathroom was well done. They also did a very nice happy hour in the lobby each evening. I also have to say that the employees were all extremely nice and helpful from the housekeeping staff to the desk staff. And if you are looking to be by the water, you couldn't do better than this as it is just two streets back from the wharfs. This is a good thing as you are close enough to walk, yet far enough to be away from the crowds. Very pleasant stay indeed.

Hi agatha56 - Thanks for staying with us and for all of the kind comments. Very pleased that your 1st time with us at The Tuscan Hotel was a great experience. We love exceeding expectations. Our Suites and King Premier Rooms do have sofa sleepers, however, when you open them up, don't plan on seeing a lot of vacant real estate. The sofa beds take up a substantial piece of property when the sofa is pulled out into a bed. We do offer rooms with 2 queen beds as well as a limited supply of Suites with 2 queen beds and a sofa sleeper in a separate room. These room types are perfect for families or for couples who enjoy hogging all the blankets! We wish you happy trails and hope to see you again...

This is a great hotel in Fishermans Wharf. Perfect location, clean, relatively quiet, comfortable rooms. Nice hosted wine hour in the lobby. Outside of summer time the rates are very reasonable. Have stayed there twice and we will be back.

If I had to recommend a hotel to another tourist, this hotel would certainly get a thumbs up from me. Yes, it might seem a little pricey, but this is SF and you're right in it's most visited area, so it's expected. And I'm not sure you'll do any better at a comparably located hotel. The rate does depend on the season, so if you can play with your dates, you can get the price down. We flew into SFO and took a Super Shuttle for our whole party (no other stops) and arrived in about half an hour. We had a friendly greeting from the doorman. Check in was quick and friendly (kudos to Alan!) He gave us a tourist map and pointed out the highlights. I see other reviewers have referred to the rooms as small. While not spacious by any means, I found them adequate for our party of 4, not uncomfortable at all. As for the view, I actually do not recall bothering to look out the window. I'm in SF to visit it up close, not to stare at it from a window. The beds were comfortable and the rooms kept clean. The flat screen TV worked fine (though we could have used a couple of more kid channels). The wi-fi worked well. Multiple places to plug in our chargers. There is a small fridge (it is stocked, but you have to pay for anything you use). If you have something that needs to be warmed, you can take it to the desk and they'll have someone warm it up for you. Actually, they just brought a whole microwave to our room the last night. The lobby is spacious with plenty of places to sit. The fireplace is great when coming in from a cool evening. Free apples at the desk and ice cold water with a touch of lemon in the lobby. Free coffee, hot chocolate, or tea in the morning. From 5-6pm, they have free wine (apple cider for non-alcoholic drinkers) with little pizza snacks and you can sit and chat with other guests. We had breakfast there one morning. A little pricey, but the portion was big enough that we could split it between 2 people and still be somewhat satisfied. There's also a Subway about a block and a half away if you need a cheaper option. Now the best part is the location, you're just a couple of blocks away from all the souvenir shops and restaurants. Pier 39 is about a 10-15 minute stroll. Pier 33 for the Alacatraz cruises is another 5 minutes beyond that. The Exploratorium was 25 minutes. There's a cable car terminus around the block basically (expect a long wait in line, though). Lombard St. is within reasonable walking distance (though a pretty good uphill climb). Chinatown is accessible by the 8X bus (nearest pick-up or drop-off point would be along Powell). If you want to get to Golden Gate Park, you can catch a 47 bus right across the street from the hotel, then transfer to a 5L bus at Van Ness and McAllister, getting off at 10th Ave. There's a Bike San Francisco shop on the next block or you can go over towards Pier 39 and find Blazing Saddles along the Embarcadero. We needed to rent a car to begin the next part of our trip to Yosemite and there's a Hertz and Avis office on Beach St. past Jones St. (Avis gave me the better price). I've stayed in the Union Square area before, but I think from a tourist standpoint, the Fisherman's Wharf district is hard to beat, and the Tuscan Inn is a good choice in this area.

We enjoyed staying at The Tuscan Inn because of the friendly staff, it is very clean and comfortable. Close to Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Cliff House and many other areas we like to visit. At the end of the day they have a very nice cocktail hour; The restaurant is also a great place to eat and the staff is very friendly.

We stayed here at the beginning of our 35th anniversary trip to CA for one night. Roy at the front desk greeted us with a smile, a glass of wine, and an extremely efficient and friendly check in. The restaurant adjoining the hotel was excellent in which we ate both dinner and breakfast. A grocery store is hidden across the street, helpful for forgotten items. Our only issues at this hotel were the discovery of a very long black hair on a very white pillowcase, and the complimentary lotion bottle was unsealed and sticky, obviously used by a previous guest. Outside of these two issues, this European style hotel (ie, small rooms but comfortable bedding and stylish décor) was a great springboard to begin our celebration in CA. We would use this hotel again, to spend more time in San Francisco.

Hi W C - Thanks for staying with us and Happy 35th anniversary! Very glad that Roy kicked off your celebration started off in fine fashion and I'm glad you were able to enjoy a meal or two in our outstanding restaurant Pescatore. Sorry about the housekeeping issues, but, I do appreciate the feedback which I've already shared with my housekeeping manager. Thank you for your kind words and we look forward to your return visit when you have more time to spend in SF...

We came into San Francisco to celebrate my birthday. We had read some good reviews on the Best Western. I thought it would be more Kimpton less Best Western but the rooms were very basic. Upon check in we asked about rooms with a view and were told that the hotel was shorter than the surrounding buildings so there was not view options. When we arrived to our room we were surprised to be shoved in a corner between a stairwell and the cleaning closet. We had a lot of noise from housekeeping banging around carts and supplies at the cleaning closet. The room was very small and very basic. Not what I was expecting for the price, we could have been at the Radisson or Sheraton for the same price point. We were please with the location. The hotel is very close to many of the attractions. Parking is pricey but that is to be expected in a larger city so it didn't bother us much and it was nice to have the valet with in and out privilege's. Beds are very comfortable. We did have a maintenance issue on the morning of check out, while dressing to leave for he day the HVAC system above the bathroom sink started leaking water right onto me while I was standing in front of the mirror. We informed the front desk staff of the leak and he quickly refunded us the $56 for parking as a apology for the room issue. Overall I think if you can get a great price for the room and don't mind just the basics you really can't beat the location. If you're paying $220+ and looking for a romantic getaway I don't recommend it.

Room Tip: We have heard if you're looking for a view and less noise request a courtyard view room.

Hi Heather G - Thanks for staying with us and for taking the time to share your thoughts. Sorry we were not able to provide a better birthday celebration. While it is true that as a four story building a few blocks removed from the SF Bay and surrounded by other buildings, one of the features of our hotel does not include view rooms. Sorry for all of the disappointment, but, we do appreciate your feedback. Wishing you a belated happy birthday and hoping your future accommodations are comfortable and satisfying.

We stayed for a couple of nights at the Best Western. The staff were helpful and friendly upon check in. Our room was neat, and not a bad size but had a boring outlook to a small garden and large wall (so nothing really to see at all). The location of the hotel is great being within easy walking distance to the restaurants of Fisherman's Wharf, tours and a reasonable walk to the City. The gym was great with access to a large fitness centre nearby.

Hi Justine B - Thanks for staying with us and for the kind comments. Glad to hear you enjoyed the location, staff, fitness facility and the room. Some rooms do look at walls; however, these rooms tend to be our most popular as they offer the most tranquil location of the hotel. The sounds of the city, for those unaccustomed to the vibrant and lively urban environment, can sometimes distract from a relaxing and peaceful night's sleep. On your next visit, we'll find just the right area of the hotel for you so that every aspect of your SF adventure will be comfortable and satisfying.
