“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2008

Completed a 3 night stay at the end of September, at the Tuscan Inn - which was excellent! Great location. Room was great - this was an outside room - so a bit of expected street noise - but not obtrusive. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. The Concierge staff - exceptional and extremely helpful - right from suggestions on transportation/excursion options to recommending an amazing restaurant.

This hotel seems to get very mixed reviews, particularly about the reception desk staff. I can only think that some of the staff are very good and some equally bad, since our experience was a very positive one. We were greeted warmly and asked how we had enjoyed our stay on leaving. Both check in (when we were able to check in very early) and check out were fine and friendly. We have stayed at this hotel once before, a few years ago, so knew that the rooms were not particularly large. On this occasion our room was quite small, but extremely nice, although it did contain the smallest wardrobe I had ever seen! The hotel is very well situated, 5 minutes walk from Fishermans Wharf, shops, restaurants and cable cars etc. We were fortunate to get an inside (or courtyard) room, so were not disturbed by noise at all (except for 1 night when the fridge went mad!) We had a problem with the AC whilst we were there, but a very friendly and helpful maintenance man came within minutes of reporting it, and had it fixed at the touch of a button. Valet parking is, in my view, unreasonably high at $38 per night, but again we knew this before we arrived so can't really complain. The best point about this hotel is the wonderful restaurant attached to it - Cafe Pescatore. Both breakfast and evening meal were excellent - it is very well used, so bookings are advised for the evening. The late afternoon free wine reception was a really nice touch and we enjoyed this very much. So once again, we enjoyed a lovely stay at this hotel and will almost certainly go back when we next visit SF.

We were anticipating a special stay for our anniversary trip.
The front desk staff couldn’t even be bothered to greet us hello. She took our confirmation information and was annoyed that we didn't have an additional copy to give her. The room was clean and nicely decorated but very small. The view from our 4th floor window was of two outside building walls, but it was very quiet. My husband talked with the concierge, who he found very helpful. The daily coffee and newspaper in the lobby were nice to have in the early morning. The location is great, only a few blocks from the Wharf. When we checked-out, the front desk clerk didn’t even bother to ask about our stay, which is very unusual. Fortunately, the hotel we stayed at in Monteray more than made up for our disappointing experience at this hotel.

  • Liked — Location, daily newspaper
  • Disliked — Front desk staff, small room, view from the room

Having stayed at the Argonaut on a previous trip, we were interested to see how the Tuscan would compare. It did not disappoint and cost less for our 4 day stay. The location is fantastic - a 5 minute walk to the Wharf and close to bus and trolley stops.

Having read previous reviews, we requested a courtyard room. We were given a room on the 4th floor with a view of a partially constructed building. We were not not concerned about the lack of view as we did not intend spending much time in our room but we did wonder whether there would be any early morning noise. Our concerns were unfounded as we did not hear a sound.

The room was a nice size and beautifully furnished. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean with a nice selection of toiletries. There was a fully-stocked fridge with snacks and drinks. Although we didn't use it, there was free Internet access in the room. We did however make use of the PC/Internet access available in the lobby without cost.

The staff at the front desk could not have been more helpful and whilst we did not avail his services, the concierge always seemed to be busy with guests giving info and advice.

The wine reception is a good way to wind down at the end of a busy day sightseeing and also to meet and share experiences with other guests. There was also a gentleman offering massage at this time and we met a few people who had enjoyed his services.

Upon checking-in, we were told that we would receive complementary continental breakfast for each morning of our stay. We do not usually rate these well but this was really nice - a large dish of fresh fruit, croissant or a muffin, juice and coffee. We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant (Cafe Pescatore) one night. The food and service were both excellent.

The only negative point was that when we booked our airport transfer through the hotel, we were charged $10 more than the going rate.

All in all, we would recommend a stay at the Tuscan and would definitely stay there again.

The hotel was nice. The rooms were nice. No complaints. Close to public transport and walking distance to restaraunt. This was probably not the best pick for us as we don't like tourist areas and Fishermans Wharf if one big tourist service. The food and drink prices in the area were outrageous.

Summary: best place to stay in a tourist trap. Especially if you don't have a car.

  • Disliked — It's in Fisherman's Wharf.

I originally requested a courtyard room but since we checked in around 11 a.m. the front desk person said one would be available around 3 p.m. but they had a 4th floor room facing the street available immediately. I am a very light sleeper so I’ll admit I was apprehensive about having a room facing the street.

We were pleased that the room was very nice and a decent size for the three of us plus it had a great view of Coit Tower, the Transamerica building and a partial view of Alcatraz through the bay window. The street noise can get loud but we already knew it would be since it IS a street-side window in a busy tourist area. I also brought a sound machine which pretty much drowns out most of the annoying noises so I did manage to sleep very well.

The mini fridge was filled with the snacks & drinks but we rearranged things so we could put our own bottles in there. The fridge made no noise at all, the a/c worked fine although we only used it once because it was cool enough for us.

Our 11 year old son said that the sofa bed was not comfortable but that is normal for most sofa beds and he slept soundly every night anyway. Our king size bed was comfy, but I thought it should have had king sized pillows as well instead of three standard size ones. The lighting was good which my husband really appreciated because he did a lot of reading during our down time.

The bathroom was an adequate size. The sink area is a bit small but there is a small glass shelf above the toilet and one shelf under the sink where hotel towels and a blow dryer are stored but there is enough room for a couple of toiletry bags. The bath has one of those large rain shower heads which we loved and it was so quiet too! The shower curtain rod curves outward to allow more “elbow” room which we really liked.

As most hotels in the city, parking is expensive so unless you really need a vehicle it’s cheaper to just buy a MUNI Passport during your stay.

There is a nice clock/radio which also has a CD player. We couldn’t figure out how to change the time on it so we just called front desk to request a wake up call each morning.

The hotel is charming and comfortable, and the staff is great. The location is hard to beat with a Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Borders, World Market and the cable car all within a block of this hotel. Pier 39 is just a short 5-10 minutes away. We were sort of sad to leave as we transferred to another hotel at Union Square for the second part of our stay. If we were to stay in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, I would absolutely stay at the Tuscan Inn again!

  • Liked — Charming boutique feel.
  • Disliked — Can't think of anything.

This was a wonderful Hotel. After reading some of the bad reviews, we started to worry about staying here. Our worries washed away the moment we reached the hotel. The staff was amazing, and went out of their way to help us. The coffee and treats in the moring was amazing. The wine and treats at night were great also, nice touch. We took the advice from other reviewers and requested a court-yard side room. Glad we did, it was very quite. Some say the rooms are small, but ours wasn't that tiny. A normal size hotel room compared to other hotel rooms we have stayed in, besides we didn't spend much time in the room when there is so much to do around San Francisco.
I will stay here again if I ever get the chance to go back to San Francisco.
