“Decent hotel in San Francisco Center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

This Hotel has a very nice situation, two minutes from Union square, in San Francisco Center. The people at the reception try your best to help you for Airport shuttle, and organizing your toutThe room are not huge, but clean and with micro wave. The bathroom has everything you need.
Only the breakfast is not the best I had in my life. No fresh bread, but fruits were OK. No espresso

I am from the east coast, and I stayed here with my boyfriend while we were on vacation to California for the first time. We stayed at the Fitzgerald for 3 nights, and it was wonderful. We found the entire room to be extremely clean and it just felt very "homey." The space was intimate, and just enough room for the two of us and kind of gave off an art deco vibe. The breakfast was included, and it was nice to have that option. We were able to get a great night's sleep as well as full wireless internet in our room. When we come to San Francisco again we will definitely be staying here...you really can't beat it!

Room Tip: We stayed up on the fourth floor, and found it to be very quiet.

My adult daughter and I were scheduled for the Adelaide Hostel, less than a block away, and were put here instead. I had a writers' conference to attend nearby and chose the Adelaide because it was close and reviews were better than any of the other hostels downtown. Room was clean and very interestingly furnished. While it is true that there was no closet, we didn't travel for that, and we were not inconvenienced by the bars to hang clothes on. Bathroom was fine/water was hot/shower was great. Breakfast was serve-yourself, saved us money, and promptly put out. I have stayed at the Hostel in the Presidio and loved it, but didn't want to try to get to Union Square from it.The price for the two of us here was right and we then could eat dinner fabulously, explore easily, and shop with the money we saved. I prefer the hostel w/the view of Golden Gate bridge (in a private room w/no private bath), even though it did have bunk beds, but for what we needed on this trip, the Fitzgerald was just fine.

The location is great but the hotel is not what I expected! Room was small and seen a couple bugs...probably because there is no ac and when we arrived the window was open! The temps were in the 50's. The staff seemed more at staring at counter then helping! I suggest finding another place to stay!

Although we initially booked Adelaide Hostel, but we ended up at Fitzgerald Hotel at Union Square, which is a sister hotel with Adelaide Hostel, I can't complain about anything, perfect location, near Restaurants, Malls, etc, its breakfast was good, clean room, even its old fashion elevator was pretty nice, although sometimes it might be quite noisy. But Price-Quality relation was fair enough

I shared a room, first with my husband and then, after his departure, with a bridge partner. It was fortunate that my husband was there first, as he was able to fix the overhead fan so that it would run without the light being on. With no A/C, the fan was necessary during the warm days. I can second Judith D's comments, up until the last sentence. Neither my bridge partner nor I felt unsafe during the day or evening and we considered the hotel itself to be rather quaint - think 1950's era. During the final two days, the basement breakfast area was being renovated, which meant there was no longer Internet available in the hotel, although we were allowed to use the computers at the hotel next door.

Maybe it was the old, cage-style, very dingy, elevator, with a grimy door, part of its jamb gouged-out and scratched and stained walls, that gave us a lousy first impression that, possibly, biased the rest of our stay in this place, which we, pretty much, disliked intensely. The best thing you can say about this hotel is that the rooms are clean. However, they are on the small side and the huge old-style wooden bed (although very comfortable) and massive chest of drawers do not help any in this respect. Really amazing was the fact that the chest of drawers had three handles missing (for one of the drawers and the two middle doors, which thus could not be opened at all!). The bathroom door, unless fully closed, insisted on swinging fully open (towards the room) and the clothes closet was not even deep enough to accommodate the hangers (so that the doors would be always partly open!!!) and was noticeably tilted forward. I don’t think we would return to this place, even if for free, unless it were the absolutely last choice. It really seems like they are trying to squeeze the last drop out of everything, as just about everything seemed to be on its last legs (slightly soiled carpets –ours with a burn mark from an iron-, old bedsheets, etc., etc., etc.) They should renovate it all, and soon!!

And, yes! the room windows were left wide open, with the fire escape ladder just outside! You see, it was "Indian Summer" .... And no in-room safe! You had to leave your valuable stuff at the front desk, where they kept it in a drawer.

And all for $300+ a night!
