“Nice little restaurant, nothing too fancy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2010 via mobile

Nice busy environment. Our party had the whole sea bass, beef cheek, duck. It was all great! Nice little wine and beer selection too. We had 3 desserts and loved the tart.

“A Nice Little Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2009

We were very happy, and a little surprised, with our evening at Coco500. It's really the perfect place for a casual mid-week dinner with friends.

Located in the quasi-industrial "South of Market" neighborhood, the atmosphere at Coco is fairly typical of the area. The room is small, perhaps 20 tables, modestly designed, but still tasteful, hip-feeling, and with a comfortable, cozy vibe. It was nice. We felt "right at home."

First surprise: the bar liquor selection. When we sat down, we ordered our usual call cocktails . . . the standard premium vodka, rum, etc . . . . and were initially irritated when told that they didn't stock the standards. BUT, we were presented a menu of really uniquely sourced liquors, which were great. The vodka, for example, was a brand I'd never heard of, but was about the smoothest I've ever tasted. In the end, we decided that someone put a lot of thought into the selections and we liked being nudged out of our usual routine to try something new. A great idea!

The menu was a nice surprise too, without being overly long or complicated and with thoughtful and unique dishes. We liked the "for the table" section, which steered you toward dishes that were perfect for sharing with the group. We ordered the cheese plate, which was very good and a perfect way to start the service while enjoying cocktails and selecting our other courses.

The balance of our meal was ALSO very good. The Ceviche was excellent, really excellent; my pasta perfectly done and exceptionally flavorful, and the beef cheek was yummy too. Less successful, perhaps owing to individual tastes, were the Gazpacho, (way too much garlic and an unappealing PLOP of crème fraiche in the middle), and the Pork, (a little too rare). Regrettably, we were too full to order desert.

Service was very good, attentive but not obtrusive, and well paced. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable about both the menu and extensive wine list, patient in explaining dishes and, most importantly, he actually had a personality.

In sum, we had a very nice evening, in a nice atmosphere, with very good food and with a reasonable check at the end. You can’t ask for more than that!
