Me and my wife booked the "bridge 2 bridge" tour in advanced to get ticket and that is a good idea, the ferry was totaly full.
The tour itself is very good and you get to see alcatraz, golden gate and the city skyline with good audio guide.
The only real downside with this tour is the audio guide hardware, it's based on a old technology and creates a lot of static and bad sound quality, so bad that you loose words and some times whole sentences.
Would also recommend getting a warm jacket for the tour, the bay is sometimes cold and windy.
This is truly one of the best activities one can do in San Francisco. You get a fantastic view of the San Francisco skyline, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, and travel right underneath Golden Gate Bridge. You see the Golden Gate in a way that not many people will ever get to see it. There is open seating on the boat and boats leave from Pier 43 1/2 all throughout the day. You can show up early to get in line, but there is no need to worry about getting a seat. As soon as the boat pulls away from the pier, everyone stands up to take pictures and pretty much remains standing for the entire trip. There is so much to photograph! The audio tour is included and is offered in many different languages. I found that it was geared more for people standing at the front of the boat looking in the direction the boat was going. I was at the back and a bit lost at times because I couldn't see the attractions the audio tour was pointing out until they were behind us. The boat passes very close to Alcatraz so you get a really good view going by and then under the Golden Gate Bridge. If you are at the front of the boat, you can photograph the Golden Gate on the way there. If you are at the back, you get a fantastic view of it on the way back. The boat goes underneath the bridge and then turns around to head back. It is very cold and windy on the boat so dress warmly. Do not wear shorts! Drinks and snacks are available for purchase.
We enjoyed the cruise to the Golden Gate and around Alcatraz even though the fog around the bridge made it impossible to see much. It get's chilly on the water, so bring a light jacket.
We took the Bridge to Bridge tour and it was fantastic. Informative and spectacular scenery - it was a great outing on the bay.
This was a great way to end the day in the Fisherman's Wharf area especially after walking around all day. We did the sunset dinner cruise and it provided breathtaking views of the bay, San Angel Island, Alcatraz, and the highlight was passing under the golden gate bridge. The food was very good. Heavy appetizers. Salad, meat and cheese tray, vegetable tray, fruit, asian sesame noodle salad, roast beef, turkey, and vegetable sandwiches, and pulled pork. Cookies for dessert. It was a great cruise and it was the highlight of our trip that day. I would definitely recommend this. You get to see the bay from the water during the day, sunset, and it ends at night and the bay bridge and fishermans wharf area is lit up at night and beautiful. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
