5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Stayed there for a week. Friendly staff, clean rooms and bathrooms; they clean twice a day.
I could say it is located in the heart of SF. Right next to Chinatown Gate, few blocks from Union Square, and Market Street, and Embarcadero.
Nice and quiet at night, for good sleep.

Green Features: Love the way, the room card controls the electricity

We sincerely appreciate you recommending us and for sharing your experience. I am thrilled to read you enjoyed your one week visit. It sounds like you took advantage of the location and ventured out to see San Francisco. I am also pleased to hear the staff and rooms were to your liking. Our housekeeping team works diligently to insure rooms are spic-n-span during and in between visits. We look forward to the next time you come to the West Coast.
Kind regards

I've stayed here many times over the years and something seems to have changed. They used to have great coffee downstairs for guests in the morning but that's gone. The good breakfast buffet seems to be gone too, at least it wasn't there when we stayed. They have added strange Chinese-restaurant type of design elements in the lobby and elevator areas, it just looks weird since the overall design of the hotel is "green", environmentally friendly and "natural". But, maybe they decided to give a tip of the hat to their location, right next to the Chinatown Gate. The rooms are still great though. Just remember that if you are getting a room with two beds, they are double beds, not queens or kings so they are pretty small. The service is excellent and the rooms are quiet and clean.

Thank you so much, we truly appreciate your feedback and loyal patronage. All of us here hope to continue to be part of your home away from home. Although I am pleased to read you enjoyed the breakfast buffet, I hope you had the opportunity to try the new menu, the French Toast is my favorite. As for the Asian influenced decor, they are items from our owners personal collection. Despite the small changes I am thrilled to hear the service is still excellent. We strive to make everyone's stay enjoyable, I feel fortunate to work with such a passionate team.
Thanks again and we look forward to your return.

The location is excellent, half a block from Chinatown gate, central to all the downtown. The hotel is in the middle of the block, so it is a smaller hotel scale wise. The rooms was lovely and the bathroom very nice. It is on the small side but the big windows make it feel more spacious. The workout room is odd, very small, no windows and just a couple pieces of cardio equipment.

We were there for a Saturday night and were able to get street parking out front for the overnight and saved $50 on parking. Everyday but Sunday the meters are running full force.

The location for this hotel cannot be beat. Many people seem to like to stay at the Fisherman's Wharf area. That is a mistake. It is convenient to all the places around Fisherman's Wharf but that is the touristy area of San Francisco and you are also fully at one end of the city. Orchard Garden Hotel is right on the edge of the Financial District and a few doors down from the Chinatown gates. It's also close to some popular bus routes for accessing other parts of the city- including Golden Gate Park and Haight-Ashbury. The trolley stops are fairly close as is the electric train that takes you to Fisherman's Wharf area. BART also stops about 3 blocks from this hotel making it very convenient for the airport.
As for the hotel itself.... it is very clean and service is great. There are no extras with this hotel though. There is no continental breakfast or any deals. But, you get a straight price for a very nice and clean place. The concierge was very attentive and had some good recommendations for us that we really ended up enjoying. They have a doorman at night for safety. Although, to be honest, I never felt unsafe at all in this area of town. We got the King Suite and it was plenty of space for us but it wasn't what we usually call a suite. It was a standard size hotel room with a longer hallway to the door with a nice sized closet and bathroom. So, it was larger than a regular hotel room but not really a suite with an extra living room type space at all. We stayed for a week and felt like we had plenty of space for the 2 of us. The hotel does have free wifi and a newspaper for you daily. They also have a refrigerator in the room as well as a coffee maker. Not all the rooms seem to have windows so if that is important, you may want to ask. This is a "green" hotel and we really appreciated that they had a collection system for paper goods, bottles as well as the regular trash can. They also have other green initiatives like only changing linens as needed and not everyday. I'm sure the website has more about this. We like that. They do have a restaurant on site. We did not eat there as it was a bit more expensive than we wanted to pay for a hotel restaurant. There are 3 very good breakfast places within a block radius and multiple places for lunch and dinner right nearby. The North Beach area is very close for nightlife. Oh, and there is a workout room and a business room.

Room Tip: Check to see if there are windows before booking. Some rooms do not have windows. Also, this is an...

Green Features: Loved it! They do seem to be "green". They had 3 bins for trash- paper, bottles and regular trash. They had a policy about linen usage- they only change it when needed.

Thank you so much for the taking the time to share your experience with us at the Orchard Garden Hotel, we truly appreciate the feedback. I tell people all the time, there is no need for a car in San Francisco. I am pleased to read you were able to see most of the sites and took advantage of the public transit. It is definitely an easy and economical alternative.
I would to also thank you for commending us on our environmental conscious efforts. We have recently set a new goal to reduce the amount of waste that goes out. It may be challenging, but I believe we will be to achieve it with everyone’s help.
I am glad the room was to your liking; our Junior Suites have the most square footage of the rooms. I apologize if there was any confusion in the room description. I am also happy to mention all of our rooms have windows. Yes some views are better than other but they are there.
Again, thank you for the very kind review and we hope to see you again soon.

Best,
Quinn McEntee

I went here with my best friend for a girl's weekend. The hotel itself is clean and comfortable. The room is small, but not uncomfortably so. The bathroom was very clean, which is important to me! The staff was friendly and happily held our bags for us after we checked out (we wanted to fit in some extra shopping minus our luggage). The location is fantastic! It's in Union Square where all the best shopping is, and it's across the street from a Starbucks if you seek the familiar. My friend and I are all about walking, so when we went to the Giant's game that night, we walked from the hotel (about 30-40 minutes). It's also on the edge of China town, which we walked through all the way to North Beach, which is SF's Little Italy. We actually arrived to SF via BART and walked to the hotel from the Montgomery station, and it was about a 10-15 minute walk. It's also pretty close to the Powell station, which we took on our way to the Mission District. I LOVED the location!

Green Features: You have to insert your key into a holder within the room to turn on the electricity.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us for your girl’s getaway. We value your comment and feedback. I am thrilled to hear you both enjoyed your stay and took advantage of the location. I too believe walking is the best way to go and see a city; it’s how you find the little gems off the beaten path. The walk to the ballpark along the Embarcadero is very nice; hopefully you were rooting for the Giants. The Mission District is a fun eclectic neighborhood; I always appreciate the mural walking tours there. We hope to you both again soon.

Kind regards

First of all, the rooms are clean, neat, spacious and functional! Also, the location of the hotel is wonderful; the hotel is RIGHT next to china town and a collection of wonderful restaurants and eateries. All staff and crew in the hotel were amazingly friendly and helpful, the room service ladies always cleaned the rooms to perfection and came back every night with complimentary chocolates (it's the little things that really make a difference)! Shout out to Oliver(front desk) who was super helpful, efficient and friendly and Tina (restaurant) server who was so delightful we couldn't help but go back to eat at the hotel restaurant. A wonderful hotel with excellent staff, Thank you for everything.

Thank you so much for the amazing review. I am pleased to read the Hotel was to your liking. Our Housekeeping and Maintenance team work scrupulously to ensure the property is tidy and in working order. I am ecstatic to hear the shout outs. Oliver is one of the newer members of our team, and has proven him self an asset already. Tina is truly a pleasure to work with as well. She creates a warm welcoming feeling in our Roots restaurant. Orchard garden is like a hidden gem in the middle of the city. This place is not fancy, but bright and clean. They really care about the environment! It's also a perfect location. Close to BART and Chinatown. It's in a nice low-key location close to lots of stuff.

Green Features: When you are gone, the room is not electrified - so they save electricity there. Great tip!

Thank you so much for the high-key review and rating. We sincerely appreciate your kind words and feedback. To me “Hidden Gem” is one of the nicest complements; I am very pleased to read that. All of us here truly care about our guests and we do our very best to provide service while keeping environmental conscious practices in mind. It sounds like you got to do and see a lot during your visit. Since San Francisco is always evolving, maybe there will be more see your next time around.
